Chapter 1

My husband announced that his mistress was pregnant while our two children were waiting to surprise him with a birthday cake.
I remember every second.
The glittering chandeliers.
The hundreds of guests.
The beautiful white roses I'd personally chosen for the ballroom.
And Marcus standing in front of me in his black tuxedo, pointing toward a pregnant woman dressed in sparkling magenta.
"I'm done hiding it!" he shouted. "Vanessa is pregnant with MY child!"
For a moment, I couldn't breathe.
My name is Nia Bennett.
I was thirty-five years old, married for nine years, and raising two beautiful children.
Noah was seven.
Lily was six.
And until that night, I believed our family was worth fighting for.
Marcus had other plans.
He stood beneath the chandeliers with the confidence of a man announcing a promotion.
Not an affair.
Not the destruction of his marriage.
A promotion.
Vanessa stepped beside him, placing one manicured hand over her swollen stomach.
Her blonde ponytail swung across her shoulder.
She smiled directly at me.
Then Marcus placed his hand over hers.
"She's giving me the family I deserve."
Something inside my chest shattered.
I stared at him.
"The family you deserve?"
He lifted his chin.
"Don't make this difficult, Nia."
I almost laughed.
Difficult?
I'd spent nine years building a life with him.
I'd supported his first business when he had nothing.
I'd stayed awake with our sick children while he traveled.
I'd sold my beloved grandmother's jewelry to help him cover payroll during his company's worst year.
And now he was standing in front of everyone, telling me another woman was giving him the family he deserved.
"What about Noah and Lily?" I whispered.
Marcus sighed.
"Don't bring the children into this."
I stared at him.
"They're your children."
Vanessa gave a little laugh.
"Oh, Nia. Nobody's saying otherwise."
I turned toward her.
She looked delighted.
Actually delighted.
Her magenta gown sparkled as she moved closer to Marcus.
"Sometimes people simply outgrow their marriages," she said.
I felt my eyes burn.
"You've been sleeping with my husband."
Her smile widened.
"Obviously."
Several guests gasped.
Someone near the front whispered my name.
I recognized my aunt Denise among the crowd.
Her hand covered her mouth.
My brother Daniel stood beside her, looking furious.
But I barely noticed.
I was staring at the man I'd married.
"How long?" I asked.
Marcus looked irritated.
"Nia, not here."
"How long?"
Vanessa answered for him.
"Eighteen months."
I felt the floor shift beneath me.
Eighteen months.
I thought about our anniversary dinner last year.
The weekend Marcus claimed he was working in Houston.
The late-night calls.
The expensive perfume I'd smelled on his jacket.
The messages he'd quickly deleted whenever I entered the room.
I'd suspected something.
But every time I questioned him, he accused me of being insecure.
"You're imagining things, Nia."
"Stop acting jealous."
"Trust your husband."
I'd trusted him.
God help me, I'd trusted him.
Marcus stepped closer.
"Look, I'm going to take care of the children financially."
I stared at him.
"Financially?"
He shrugged.
"What else do you want?"
I opened my mouth.
But no words came.
Because suddenly, I heard two familiar voices.
"MOM!"
I turned.
Noah and Lily were running across the ballroom.
Lily's little cream dress bounced around her knees.
Noah's navy suit jacket was crooked.
Their faces were frightened.
They had been in a private room with their grandmother, waiting for the birthday surprise.
Somehow, they'd heard the shouting.
Lily reached me first.
"Mommy!"
I dropped to my knees.
She threw herself into my arms.
Noah wrapped both arms around my neck.
"Why is Daddy yelling?"
I held them tightly.
My tears finally spilled.
"It's okay, babies."
Lily was crying.
"Is Daddy leaving us?"
That question nearly destroyed me.
I looked over her shoulder.
Marcus stood beside Vanessa, watching us.
He didn't approach.
He didn't kneel beside his children.
He didn't even look ashamed.
I kissed Lily's forehead.
Then Noah's.
"Listen to me. Mommy loves you more than anything."
Noah's lower lip trembled.
"Are we still a family?"
I hugged him tighter.
"Always."
I meant it.
Whatever Marcus did, he could never erase the family my children and I had built.
I stood slowly, holding Lily's hand.
Noah pressed against my side.
Then I turned toward Marcus.
"You wanted a new family?"
He smirked.
"Finally, you're being reasonable."
Vanessa gripped his arm.
I looked directly into my husband's eyes.
"Fine."
His smile widened.
"But before you celebrate, call your lawyer."
Marcus frowned.
"What?"
"I filed something this morning."
The smile disappeared.
He stepped closer.
"Filed what?"
I felt strangely calm.
The kind of calm that comes after you've cried every tear your body can produce.
I looked at the man who thought he could replace me without consequences.
Then I spoke.
"You'll find out when you try to go home."
Marcus's face went pale.
Vanessa stopped smiling.
"What did you do?" she demanded.
I didn't answer.
Instead, I took my children's hands.
Noah looked up at me.
"Mommy, where are we going?"
I squeezed his fingers.
"Somewhere safe, sweetheart."
Marcus moved toward us.
"Nia, stop."
I kept walking.
He raised his voice.
"You can't threaten me and just leave!"
I turned one final time.
"Marcus, you've spent eighteen months making decisions without me."
His jaw tightened.
"Now it's my turn."
Vanessa laughed nervously.
"She's bluffing."
I looked at her.
"Then you have nothing to worry about."
I walked toward the ballroom doors.
My children stayed close.
Behind me, Marcus started shouting my name.
I didn't look back.
Because what he didn't know was that I'd discovered more than his affair.
Three weeks earlier, I'd found documents showing that Marcus had secretly been moving money out of our family business.
Money that didn't belong to him alone.
Money connected to the inheritance my father had left me.
And that morning, with my attorney's help, I'd filed for divorce and emergency protection of our assets.
I'd also secured temporary exclusive possession of our home through a court order.
Marcus hadn't been notified yet.
But the process server was waiting.

And when he arrived at the gates of our estate, he would learn that his pregnant mistress wasn't the only surprise waiting for him.
The real surprise was that the wife he'd underestimated had already begun taking her life back.
