Surprise

Chapter 7

Three days after the wedding, Vanessa called me.

I almost ignored the number.

But something made me answer.

"Nia?"

Her voice sounded different.

Gone was the arrogance.

Gone was the mocking laughter.

She sounded frightened.

"What do you want?"

She hesitated.

"I need to talk."

I stared at the phone.

"Talk to my attorney."

"Please. This is important."

I felt anger rise.

"Was it important when you cut my mother's hair?"

Silence.

Then she whispered, "I know I was wrong."

I couldn't believe what I was hearing.

"Now you know?"

"Marcus lied to me."

I closed my eyes.

Of course.

Now that things were falling apart, she wanted someone else to blame.

"Vanessa, you picked up scissors and attacked an elderly woman. Marcus didn't force your hand."

She started crying.

"I know."

"Then take responsibility."

She inhaled sharply.

"There's something you don't understand about the company."

My stomach tightened.

"What?"

"Marcus has debts."

I sat down.

"What debts?"

She hesitated.

"Business loans. Personal loans. Money he borrowed from people he knows."

I remembered how Marcus always seemed stressed about finances.

He had a good job.

But he spent extravagantly.

Designer watches.

Luxury car payments.

Weekend trips.

I'd assumed he could afford them.

Vanessa continued.

"He needed your money to keep everything from collapsing."

I swallowed.

"How much does he owe?"

She didn't answer immediately.

"More than two hundred thousand dollars."

I stared at the wall.

"That's impossible."

"I wish it were."

My mind raced.

If Marcus owed that much, what had he planned to do with my savings?

Pay off his debts?

Fund the company?

Run away with Vanessa?

"Why are you telling me this?"

Vanessa began crying harder.

"Because he's blaming everything on me."

I leaned back.

"He should answer for his choices."

"He told the police I acted alone."

"You did cut my mother's hair."

"Yes, but—"

"No excuses."

She fell silent.

Then she said, "I have messages proving he knew the plan."

My heart pounded.

"Give them to your attorney or the investigators."

"Will you help me?"

I couldn't believe her.

"Help you?"

"Marcus says he's going to ruin my life."

I took a slow breath.

"Vanessa, I'm not responsible for protecting you from the consequences of what you did."

She began sobbing.

I continued.

"But if you have evidence, tell the truth."

There was a long silence.

Then she whispered, "I'm sorry about your mother."

I closed my eyes.

"Tell her that when you're ready to apologize without asking for something in return."

I ended the call.

My hands were shaking.

I immediately documented the conversation and contacted Danielle.

She told me not to rely on Vanessa's claims without independent evidence.

I agreed.

But the information gave us another reason to investigate Marcus's finances.

Over the next week, Danielle helped me organize the documents.

The proposed investment agreement.

The company registration.

The emails.

The wedding footage.

The text messages.

Everything showed a troubling pattern.

Marcus had repeatedly pressured me to combine finances.

He had presented his company as more established than it appeared.

And he'd hidden Vanessa's involvement.

We didn't know every detail yet.

But we knew enough to protect me.

My bank confirmed that no money had left my account.

I nearly cried when I heard that.

Ninety thousand dollars.

Safe.

Money my father had helped me begin saving.

Money I'd earned through years of hard work.

Money Marcus had apparently expected to control.

That evening, I went to my father's grave.

Mom came with me.

We brought fresh flowers.

I knelt beside the headstone.

"Dad, I messed up."

My voice broke.

"I thought Marcus was the one."

Mom placed her hand on my shoulder.

I continued.

"I wanted you to be proud of me."

The wind moved through the trees.

I started crying.

"I wanted a family like the one you and Mom built."

Mom knelt beside me.

"Nia."

I looked at her.

She gently touched my face.

"Your father would never measure your worth by whether a man stayed."

I wiped my eyes.

"He'd be proud you walked away when you learned the truth."

I leaned into her.

For a while, we sat quietly.

Then Mom began talking about my father.

How he used to bring her flowers from the grocery store because he couldn't afford expensive ones.

How he'd dance with her in the kitchen.

How he'd apologize whenever he was wrong.

She smiled through her tears.

"He wasn't perfect."

I looked at her.

"But he never made me afraid to speak."

That sentence stayed with me.

Love wasn't about expensive rings.

It wasn't about public promises.

It was about feeling safe enough to be honest.

When we returned home, Danielle had left me a message.

"Nia, please call me."

I called immediately.

She answered with a serious voice.

"I received information from an attorney representing one of Marcus's creditors."

My stomach tightened.

"What information?"

"There may be outstanding debts connected to his company."

I closed my eyes.

"Vanessa told me."

"Then we need to be careful. We must verify everything."

I nodded.

Danielle continued.

"Someone has also contacted me claiming Marcus represented that you would provide a substantial investment."

I froze.

"What?"

"The person says Marcus used your expected investment as part of his business pitch."

My chest tightened.

"But I never agreed."

"I understand. We need to establish exactly what was said and whether any documents were misrepresented."

I stared at the wall.

Marcus had been telling people my money was available.

Before I married him.

Before I signed anything.

I felt sick.

"Can they come after me?"

Danielle explained that responsibility depended on the specific agreements and applicable law, but my lack of authorization mattered.

We would review every claim carefully.

I thanked her.

Then I called Jasmine.

She answered immediately.

"Nia? Are you okay?"

I hesitated.

"Not really."

"I'm coming over."

Twenty minutes later, she arrived carrying takeout and a box of tissues.

We sat on my bedroom floor like we used to in college.

I told her everything.

When I finished, she looked furious.

"He tried to turn your wedding into a financial trap."

I stared at her.

"That's what it feels like."

She squeezed my hand.

"Nia, listen to me."

I looked up.

"You didn't lose because you trusted someone."

Tears filled my eyes.

"He lost because he betrayed someone who loved him."

I began crying.

She hugged me.

Then my phone vibrated.

A message from an unfamiliar number.

I opened it.

It contained a photograph.

Marcus standing beside Vanessa outside a hotel.

The timestamp showed the night before our wedding.

Below it was a single sentence.

"You deserve to know this wasn't the first time."

I stared at the screen.

Then another message arrived.

"I have more proof. And Marcus isn't the only one who planned to take your money."

I looked at Jasmine.

The nightmare wasn't finished.

May you like

Someone else knew what Marcus and Vanessa had been doing.

And whoever it was had finally decided to speak.
