Surprise

Chapter 8 - The Father Who Knew Too Much

My father stood beneath the harsh white lights of the parking structure.

For a moment, I wondered if I was imagining him.

Richard Carter.

The man who had spent my entire life teaching me that loyalty mattered.

The man who had built an empire from nothing.

The man who had just admitted he helped destroy my family.

He looked older than I remembered.

Not physically.

Not exactly.

It was something else.

A person who has spent too long carrying a secret eventually starts wearing it.

His shoulders were lower.

His face was tired.

His eyes looked like a man who knew he had run out of places to hide.

“Dad?”

The word came out with disbelief.

He took a step toward me.

“Daniel.”

I immediately raised my hand.

“Don’t.”

He stopped.

Because he knew.

He knew I wasn’t the same son who would automatically forgive him.

Not anymore.

Not after today.

Not after six years of lies.

“What are you doing here?”

My father looked at Ethan.

Then back at me.

“I came to tell you the truth.”

I laughed quietly.

The sound was bitter.

“The truth?”

I looked around the empty parking structure.

“Everyone seems to have a different version of that.”

Ethan remained silent beside me.

But his eyes never left my father.

There was history there.

A history I didn’t understand.

“You know him,” I said.

My father didn’t answer.

That was enough.

“You know Ethan.”

“Yes.”

“How?”

My father sighed.

“Because he was the person I hired.”

My eyebrows pulled together.

“Hired for what?”

He looked away.

And that hesitation made my anger rise.

“No more secrets.”

My voice echoed through the concrete walls.

“No more protecting people.”

My father looked at me.

“I hired him to investigate Vanessa.”

The words surprised me.

“What?”

Ethan nodded slowly.

“It’s true.”

I stared between them.

“Then why did you let everything happen?”

My father closed his eyes.

“Because I was too late.”

I shook my head.

“That’s not an answer.”

“No.”

His voice cracked.

“It’s an excuse.”

For the first time all day, I heard my father admit something without trying to defend himself.

And somehow, that made it worse.

“Start from the beginning.”

He nodded.

“Six years ago, I noticed something about Vanessa.”

I crossed my arms.

“What?”

“She was asking questions.”

“What kind of questions?”

“About you.”

I already knew.

“Money.”

“Yes.”

“Assets.”

“Yes.”

“My family.”

“Yes.”

I looked at Ethan.

“When did you hire him?”

“Three months before Rachel disappeared.”

Three months.

My stomach tightened.

“So you knew she was dangerous.”

My father looked down.

“I suspected.”

I stepped closer.

“You suspected?”

My anger exploded.

“You suspected the woman around my daughter was dangerous, and you did nothing?”

“I tried.”

“No.”

I shook my head.

“You watched.”

My father looked hurt.

But I didn’t care.

Not yet.

“You watched my wife disappear.”

“I made mistakes.”

“You made choices.”

The same words I had used with Vanessa.

Because they were true.

My father swallowed.

“Yes.”

Silence.

Then Ethan finally spoke.

“Your father was trying to gather evidence.”

I looked at him.

“Evidence?”

“Yes.”

“While my family was falling apart?”

Ethan looked away.

“Because he believed Vanessa was more dangerous than anyone realized.”

I stared at him.

“What does that mean?”

Ethan hesitated.

Then pulled out a small envelope.

“I have something you need to see.”

I didn’t move.

“What is it?”

“Proof.”

Everyone had said that word today.

Proof.

Evidence.

Truth.

But every piece of truth had brought more pain.

Still, I took it.

Inside was a printed report.

The first page had Vanessa’s name.

And another name beneath it.

My father’s financial advisor.

The man from the photograph.

I looked at Ethan.

“Gregory.”

He nodded.

“Gregory Hale.”

The man who had handled my family’s finances for years.

The man who knew everything.

My father continued:

“He was the connection.”

“Between who?”

“Vanessa and my company.”

My eyes moved across the report.

There were dates.

Payments.

Transfers.

Meetings.

My hands tightened.

“She paid him?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

My father looked at me.

“To access information about you.”

I felt sick.

“She planned this.”

“Yes.”

“How long?”

Ethan answered.

“Almost seven years.”

Seven years.

Before Vanessa entered my life.

Before she became my fiancée.

Before anyone suspected anything.

She had been planning.

I looked at my father.

“And Rachel?”

His face changed.

“She was the first person who realized something was wrong.”

I closed my eyes.

Of course she was.

Rachel always saw people clearly.

Even when I didn’t.

“What happened that night?”

My father took a deep breath.

“The night Rachel disappeared…”

He looked at the ground.

“I received a call.”

“From who?”

“Vanessa.”

My hands clenched.

“She told me Rachel was unstable.”

I stared at him.

“You believed her?”

“No.”

That surprised me.

“No?”

My father shook his head.

“I knew something was wrong.”

“Then why?”

He looked at me.

“Because she threatened me.”

“With what?”

“The documents.”

The evidence of his mistakes.

The thing Vanessa had been using as leverage.

“She told me if I didn’t help her, she would destroy everything.”

I laughed bitterly.

“So you protected your reputation.”

My father’s face fell.

“Yes.”

At least he admitted it.

“I thought I could control the situation.”

“You couldn’t.”

“No.”

His voice became quiet.

“I couldn’t.”

Ethan stepped forward.

“That’s why I was brought in.”

I looked at him.

“What did you find?”

He looked at Rachel’s name on the report.

“I found out Rachel was telling the truth.”

My chest tightened.

“Then why didn’t anyone stop her?”

Ethan’s expression darkened.

“Because someone inside the investigation was feeding Vanessa information.”

I froze.

“Someone else?”

He nodded.

“Vanessa had people everywhere.”

I felt exhausted.

Like every answer created another door.

“Who helped her?”

Ethan looked at me.

“We’re still trying to confirm everyone.”

I shook my head.

“Still?”

“Yes.”

Then he said something that made me stop.

“Because one person covered their tracks better than anyone.”

“Who?”

Ethan looked at my father.

Then me.

“Daniel.”

The way he said my name made my stomach tighten.

“What?”

“The person who made the final move wasn’t Vanessa.”

I waited.

“It was someone pretending to be you.”

The photograph.

The message.

The person who looked like me.

My blood ran cold.

“What are you saying?”

Ethan opened another file.

“The night Rachel disappeared, someone used your identity.”

My voice became quiet.

“To do what?”

“To convince Rachel that you wanted her gone.”

I felt numb.

“How?”

Ethan handed me another document.

“A fake message.”

I looked at it.

My name was at the top.

My words.

My style.

But not my writing.

It said:

Rachel,

I know everything.

I know about the other man.

I know you betrayed me.

Do not come back.

Daniel.

My heart stopped.

“I never wrote this.”

“I know.”

“Who did?”

Nobody answered.

Because the answer was the thing we were all afraid of.

Then my father spoke.

“Vanessa.”

I looked at him.

“She had access to your devices.”

My jaw tightened.

“Because she lived with me.”

“Yes.”

I stared at the message.

Six years.

Six years believing Rachel left.

Six years believing she betrayed me.

When the truth was someone had built a lie so perfect that even I accepted it.

“Where is Gregory now?”

My father’s expression changed.

“He disappeared.”

“When?”

“Today.”

Today.

The wedding day.

Of course.

Everything was happening today.

A final move.

A cleanup.

A disappearance.

My phone suddenly rang.

I looked down.

Unknown number.

Everyone went silent.

I answered.

“Hello?”

A woman’s voice came through.

Cold.

Calm.

Familiar.

Vanessa.

But she wasn’t near me.

“Daniel.”

My body went still.

“Where are you?”

She ignored the question.

“I know you found Ethan.”

My eyes moved toward him.

“How?”

A small laugh.

“You still don’t understand.”

My grip tightened around the phone.

“Understand what?”

“That this was never about the wedding.”

Silence.

“What are you talking about?”

Her voice lowered.

“The wedding was just the final step.”

My heart started pounding.

“Final step of what?”

I heard her breathing.

Then:

“Taking everything your father built.”

I looked at my father.

Then Ethan.

Then the darkness around us.

“Where are you, Vanessa?”

Another pause.

Then she whispered:

“Somewhere your daughter will never find you.”

My blood ran cold.

“Nia.”

The line went silent.

I immediately called back.

No answer.

Again.

Nothing.

I looked at Ethan.

“Where is she?”

He didn’t need to ask who I meant.

He was already running toward the exit.

My father followed.

And for the first time in six years…

We were all chasing the same truth.

But when I reached my car, my phone buzzed one more time.

A photo appeared.

Nia.

Standing inside the wedding venue.

Looking frightened.

And behind her was Vanessa.

Under the picture was a message:

“Come back to the place where it started.”

I stared at the screen.

Because I knew exactly what she meant.

The wedding entrance.

The perfect paradise.

May you like

The place where she first tried to erase my daughter.

And now she had taken my daughter there.
