Chapter 7 - The Man in the Photograph

I stared at the image on my phone.
I didn’t blink.
I couldn’t.
Because the person standing beside Rachel looked like me.
Same height.
Same build.
Same dark suit.
Same posture.
For a moment, I couldn’t hear anything around me.
Not the guests whispering.
Not the wind moving through the trees.
Not even Nia calling my name.
All I could see was that photograph.
A picture that was supposed to prove something.
A picture that was supposed to reveal the truth.
But instead, it created a question I wasn’t prepared to answer.
What did I do that night?
“Daniel?”
Rachel’s voice pulled me back.
I looked up.
She was staring at my face.
She already knew something was wrong.
“What happened?”
I turned the phone toward her.
She looked at the image.
And the color immediately disappeared from her face.
“No.”
The word came out as a whisper.
Marcus stepped closer.
“What is it?”
I didn’t answer.
I watched Rachel.
Because her reaction mattered more than anything.
She looked terrified.
Not because she saw herself.
Because she saw me.
“Rachel,” I said slowly.
“Is that me?”
She didn’t respond.
“Rachel.”
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I don’t know.”
That answer hurt more than if she had said yes.
Because Rachel was the one person I thought I could trust.
The one person who had been fighting to reveal the truth.
And even she didn’t know.
James took the phone from my hand.
He studied the image carefully.
“This photo could be manipulated.”
I looked at him.
“You think?”
“Yes.”
He zoomed in.
“The quality is poor. We need the original file.”
Marcus stepped forward.
“But if it’s real…”
Nobody finished the sentence.
Because everyone knew what it meant.
If it was real, then the story we believed about that night was wrong.
All of it.
Rachel slowly sat down on a nearby bench.
Her hands were shaking.
“I remember that night.”
Everyone looked at her.
I moved closer.
“What do you remember?”
She looked at me.
“Everything.”
Her voice was quiet.
“I remember packing a bag.”
I nodded.
“You told me you were leaving.”
She shook her head.
“No.”
That surprised me.
“No?”
“I wasn’t leaving you.”
She looked down.
“I was trying to leave Vanessa.”
My heart tightened.
“Explain.”
Rachel took a deep breath.
“After Vanessa threatened me, I realized I couldn’t fight her alone.”
She looked toward Marcus.
“I knew I needed proof.”
Marcus lowered his head.
Rachel continued.
“So I agreed to meet someone.”
My eyes narrowed.
“Who?”
She hesitated.
“A private investigator.”
The photograph suddenly felt heavier.
“You met a private investigator?”
“Yes.”
“When?”
“The night I disappeared.”
Everyone became silent.
I looked at the image again.
The man beside her.
The person who looked like me.
Could it have been the investigator?
No.
Something didn’t fit.
“Why would you meet him?”
Rachel looked at me.
“Because I needed to prove Vanessa was lying.”
She swallowed.
“I needed proof that she had been manipulating everyone.”
I looked at Vanessa.
She was standing several feet away.
Watching.
Quiet.
For the first time, she didn’t look like someone controlling the situation.
She looked like someone waiting for a verdict.
“What happened when you met him?”
Rachel closed her eyes.
“I never made it.”
My eyebrows pulled together.
“What?”
“I left the house.”
She looked at the ground.
“But before I reached the location, someone stopped me.”
“Who?”
Rachel looked at me.
“You.”
The entire world stopped.
I felt the blood drain from my face.
“No.”
She nodded slowly.
“You were there.”
My voice became defensive.
“That’s impossible.”
“I know what I saw.”
“Rachel, I was home.”
She stared at me.
“Were you?”
The question cut deep.
Because suddenly, I wasn’t sure.
I searched my memories.
The night Rachel disappeared.
The details.
The timeline.
Everything had always been blurry.
I remembered finding the note.
I remembered Nia crying.
I remembered calling Rachel.
But before that?
Before I found the note?
There was something missing.
A gap.
A blank space.
I looked at Marcus.
He looked away.
“Marcus.”
He didn’t answer.
“Tell me.”
His jaw tightened.
“There’s something you don’t remember.”
My chest tightened.
“What?”
He took a breath.
“That night, you called me.”
“I called you?”
“Yes.”
“What did I say?”
Marcus looked at Rachel.
Then back at me.
“You said you found out Rachel was cheating.”
The words hit me like a physical blow.
I stepped back.
“No.”
“You were angry.”
“No.”
“You told me you saw her with another man.”
My head started spinning.
“That never happened.”
Marcus’s eyes filled.
“I know.”
“Then why did you believe it?”
“Because you sounded like yourself.”
The answer scared me.
Because that meant something.
Someone had made me believe something.
Someone had manipulated me.
Rachel whispered:
“She drugged you.”
Everyone looked at her.
“What?”
Rachel looked at Vanessa.
“She told me she was going to do it.”
Vanessa’s face changed.
“Stop.”
Rachel continued.
“She said she would make Daniel forget.”
My heart raced.
“What are you talking about?”
Rachel looked at me.
“Vanessa had been giving you something.”
I frowned.
“Giving me what?”
“I don’t know.”
She looked at James.
“But I remember her saying you would wake up confused.”
James immediately looked serious.
“Daniel, do you remember anything unusual from that period?”
I thought.
My head hurt.
The weeks before Rachel disappeared.
I had been exhausted.
More tired than normal.
I blamed work.
Stress.
The pressure of running the company.
But now…
There were moments I couldn’t explain.
Missing conversations.
Missing hours.
Things Vanessa said happened that I couldn’t remember.
“You’re saying she drugged me?”
Rachel nodded.
“I’m saying she was preparing everything.”
I looked at Vanessa.
“Is that true?”
She shook her head.
“No.”
But her voice lacked confidence.
“Daniel, they are making you believe a fantasy.”
I walked toward her.
“Then explain the photograph.”
She said nothing.
“Explain my signature on fake documents.”
Nothing.
“Explain why you knew Rachel was coming back.”
Her eyes filled.
“Because I loved you.”
I stopped.
“That’s not an explanation.”
She looked at me.
“I knew because I was watching.”
The confession slipped out before she could stop herself.
The garden became silent.
“You were watching?”
Vanessa froze.
“I mean…”
“No.”
I shook my head.
“You said it.”
She looked away.
“You were watching Rachel.”
Her silence confirmed it.
James stepped forward.
“Daniel.”
He looked at the phone.
“We need to leave.”
“Why?”
“Because this is no longer a wedding problem.”
His expression was serious.
“This is criminal.”
The word hung there.
Criminal.
I looked at Nia.
I hated that she was hearing this.
I hated that her life had become a battlefield.
But I needed answers.
“Where is the original photograph?”
The unknown number messaged again.
I looked down.
Another message.
A location.
And one sentence.
“Come alone if you want the truth.”
My stomach tightened.
James noticed.
“What is it?”
I locked the phone.
“Nothing.”
Rachel immediately looked suspicious.
“Daniel.”
I knew that tone.
She knew I was hiding something.
But if someone was sending these messages…
If someone knew the truth…
I needed to find them.
“I need to go somewhere.”
“No.”
Rachel stood.
“No, Daniel.”
“I need answers.”
“You could be walking into a trap.”
I looked at Vanessa.
Then at everyone who had lied to me.
“I’ve been living inside a trap for six years.”
Nobody spoke.
I looked at James.
“Can you protect Nia?”
His expression changed.
“Daniel…”
“Please.”
He looked at my daughter.
Then nodded.
“I will.”
Marcus stepped forward.
“Let me come with you.”
I shook my head.
“No.”
“Daniel.”
“I need to know if I can trust anyone.”
That hurt him.
I saw it.
But it was the truth.
I walked away from the wedding venue.
Away from the flowers.
Away from the guests.
Away from the life I thought I understood.
Twenty minutes later, I arrived at an abandoned parking structure downtown.
The location from the message.
My hands were tense on the steering wheel.
I almost turned around.
Almost.
Then I saw someone standing beneath the flickering lights.
A man.
Older.
Wearing a dark jacket.
Waiting.
I stepped out of the car.
“Who are you?”
The man looked at me.
And my heart stopped.
Because I recognized him.
Not from my life.
From the photograph.
The man standing beside Rachel six years ago.
The man everyone thought was me.
He walked closer.
“Daniel Carter?”
“Yes.”
He looked around nervously.
“I never thought you would come.”
“Who are you?”
He swallowed.
“My name is Ethan Cole.”
I stared at him.
“What do you have to do with Rachel?”
His expression changed.
“Everything.”
I stepped closer.
“Then tell me the truth.”
He looked at me.
Then said:
“Daniel, the woman you think disappeared…”
He paused.
“She was actually trying to save you.”
My heart tightened.
“From what?”
Ethan looked over his shoulder.
Then whispered:
“From yourself.”
I froze.
“What does that mean?”
Before he could answer, a car engine roared from the entrance.
Headlights flooded the parking structure.
Ethan’s face changed.
“Someone followed you.”
I turned.
A black SUV stopped several feet away.
The door opened.
And the person who stepped out made my blood run cold.
May you like
Because it was someone I never expected to see.
My father.
