Surprise

Chapter 9: The Person Hiding Inside My House

My heart stopped.

The photograph on my phone had been taken only seconds earlier.

Harper was curled around the worn teddy bear Claire had given her on her second birthday.

Lily had one tiny hand resting on Emma's blanket.

Sophie was sleeping on her side with one bare foot sticking out from beneath the quilt.

The angle wasn't from the hallway.

It wasn't from the doorway.

Whoever took the picture had been standing inside the bedroom.

Inside.

I looked toward the staircase.

Every instinct I had as a father drowned out everything else.

The letters.

The recordings.

The company.

The money.

None of it mattered if someone was still close enough to reach my daughters.

I shoved the phone into my pocket and ran.

"Ethan!"" Olivia shouted behind me.

I didn't answer.

I took the stairs two at a time.

Behind me I heard footsteps.

Daniel.

Grant.

Vanessa.

Margaret.

Everyone was following.

That terrified me even more.

Because I no longer knew who I wanted behind me.

When I reached the bedroom, I pushed the door open so hard it slammed against the wall.

The room was empty.

The girls were exactly where they had been in the photograph.

Sleeping peacefully.

Harper stirred when she heard me.

"Daddy?""

I rushed to her bed and knelt beside her.

"I'm here.""

She rubbed her eyes.

"Why are you crying?""

I hadn't realized tears were running down my face.

I smiled weakly.

"I'm okay.""

She reached out with her tiny hand and touched my cheek.

"You always smile when you lie.""

The words hit me like a punch.

Claire used to say the same thing.

I kissed Harper's forehead.

"I'm not leaving you.""

She nodded sleepily.

"Promise?""

"I promise.""

She closed her eyes again.

I stood and looked around the room.

Nothing seemed disturbed.

Nothing had been moved.

Yet someone had stood here moments ago.

Watching them.

I slowly scanned every corner.

The closet.

The curtains.

Under the beds.

Nothing.

Grant entered first.

"Ethan...""

I turned sharply.

"Stay back.""

He froze.

"I'm trying to help.""

"No.""

I pointed toward the floor.

"Nobody touches anything.""

Olivia entered next.

She stopped immediately.

"What happened?""

I pulled out my phone and showed her the picture.

Her face drained of color.

"When was this taken?""

"Less than a minute ago.""

She whispered, "Then they're still here.""

Daniel stepped into the room.

"That's impossible.""

I looked at him.

"Is it?""

He folded his arms.

"This house has security.""

I laughed bitterly.

"My daughters were starved inside this house.""

I pointed toward the bedroom.

"Someone walked into this room.""

I looked directly at him.

"So forgive me if I don't have much faith in the security.""

Nobody answered.

Then something caught my attention.

A faint smell.

Not perfume.

Not food.

Fresh paint.

I frowned.

This room hadn't been painted recently.

I walked toward the bookshelf.

The smell became stronger.

I placed my hand against the wall.

Cold.

I tapped it lightly.

Solid.

Then another section.

Hollow.

I looked back.

"Who renovated this room?""

Vanessa's face changed instantly.

"I don't know.""

"You lived here.""

"I didn't choose the renovations.""

I knocked again.

The sound echoed differently.

Grant slowly looked away.

I noticed.

"You know.""

"No.""

"You do.""

He sighed.

"There used to be a storage space behind that wall.""

My pulse quickened.

"There used to be?""

"When the house was remodeled.""

"When?""

He hesitated.

"After Claire died.""

I stared at him.

"Who ordered it?""

Nobody answered.

I looked at Daniel.

He remained silent.

I looked at Vanessa.

She wouldn't meet my eyes.

That silence was enough.

I grabbed a heavy bronze candleholder from a nearby table.

"Ethan," Margaret said nervously.

"What are you doing?""

I swung.

The plaster cracked.

Dust filled the room.

I hit it again.

Another crack.

Then a section of drywall collapsed inward.

A cold draft rushed out.

Behind the wall...

Was a narrow passage.

Olivia covered her mouth.

"Oh my God.""

Grant whispered,

"I forgot...""

I turned.

"You forgot?""

He stared at the opening.

"I thought they sealed it.""

I shined my phone flashlight inside.

The passage stretched several feet before turning sharply.

Just wide enough for an adult to walk through.

My stomach twisted.

Someone could have stood inside this hidden space.

Watching.

Listening.

Entering the bedroom whenever they wanted.

I stepped inside.

"Ethan, wait!"" Olivia called.

I ignored her.

The passage smelled old.

Dust covered the floor.

But not evenly.

Fresh footprints.

Recent.

Someone had been here.

Very recently.

I followed them.

The passage ended at another hidden panel.

I pushed.

It opened quietly.

I stepped into...

Claire's old study.

I froze.

The room had been locked since her death.

Vanessa had always claimed she couldn't bear to enter it.

Yet the hidden passage connected directly to my daughters' bedroom.

Someone had been moving between the rooms without using the hallway.

I slowly looked around.

Bookshelves.

Desk.

Family photographs.

Everything looked untouched.

Until I noticed the desk drawer.

Open.

Just slightly.

I pulled it open.

Empty.

Except for one folded piece of paper.

No envelope.

No name.

Only four handwritten words.

*Too late, Ethan.*

My breathing became shallow.

Someone had left this recently.

Very recently.

Because there was no dust on the paper.

I heard footsteps behind me.

Olivia entered the study.

"What did you find?""

I handed her the note.

She frowned.

"They're playing with you.""

"No.""

I looked around carefully.

"They're talking to me.""

Then I noticed something else.

The family photograph on Claire's desk.

It had been turned upside down.

I picked it up.

Behind the frame...

A tiny wireless camera.

Still blinking.

Red.

Active.

I ripped it free.

Olivia stared.

"They've been watching.""

I nodded slowly.

"They've been watching this room.""

Then another realization hit me.

"No...""

Olivia looked at me.

"What?""

"If there's one camera...""

I looked toward the bedroom.

"There are more.""

Within minutes, every room upstairs was being searched.

Inside a smoke detector.

Behind an air vent.

Inside a decorative clock.

Three more hidden cameras.

Margaret sat down and began crying.

"I never knew...""

Vanessa looked genuinely shocked.

"I didn't put those there.""

I turned toward her.

"Can you prove it?""

She opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

Grant quietly said,

"I believe her.""

I looked at him.

"Why?""

"Because whoever installed those knew the renovation plans.""

Silence.

Grant slowly looked toward Daniel.

Everyone followed his gaze.

Daniel's expression remained unreadable.

"I didn't install cameras.""

I walked toward him.

"But you knew about the renovation.""

"I approved invoices.""

"For hidden passages?""

"I approved construction.""

"Without looking?""

"It was years ago.""

I stopped inches from him.

"My daughters have been watched.""

He didn't answer.

"My dead wife's study has been watched.""

Still nothing.

"My entire house has been turned into someone else's surveillance system.""

Daniel finally spoke.

"You're asking the wrong question.""

I almost smiled.

"You've said that before.""

"And I was right.""

"What question should I ask?""

He looked directly at me.

"Who has been watching the cameras?""

The room fell silent.

Because that question was worse.

Installing cameras required access.

Watching them required time.

Someone had spent months...

Maybe years...

Observing every movement inside my home.

My phone vibrated again.

Another message.

*Now you understand why Claire couldn't trust the house.*

I typed my first reply.

*Who are you?*

The response came almost instantly.

*Someone Claire saved.*

I stared at the screen.

Another message.

*Go to the nursery. Open the music box. Don't let anyone touch it first.*

The nursery.

The room we had prepared before the girls were born.

We rarely used it now because the girls shared a larger bedroom.

I looked up.

"We're going to the nursery.""

Daniel stepped forward immediately.

"There's nothing there.""

I looked at him.

"You answered too quickly.""

His jaw tightened.

"I remember the room.""

"So do I.""

I walked past him.

The nursery door creaked open.

Moonlight spilled through the curtains.

Everything looked frozen in time.

The rocking chair.

The painted stars on the ceiling.

Claire's handmade blanket folded neatly over the crib rail.

In the corner...

A wooden music box shaped like a carousel.

Exactly where Claire had left it.

I walked toward it.

Behind me I heard Daniel's voice for the first time that night rise above its calm tone.

"Ethan.""

I didn't stop.

"Don't open it.""

I placed my hand on the music box.

The room was so quiet I could hear everyone breathing.

I slowly lifted the lid.

The music didn't play.

Instead...

A small metal key rested inside.

Attached to it was a handwritten tag in Claire's unmistakable handwriting.

*Police Locker 214.*

May you like

Underneath, in smaller letters, were the words that made every person in the room go pale.

*If this key is still here, someone inside this house has been lying to Ethan since the day I died.*
