Chapter 4: The Letter Claire Hid Before She Died
For a moment, nobody moved.
Not me.
Not Vanessa.
Not Daniel.
The only sound in the room was the soft hum of the heater struggling against the winter cold.
My hand tightened around the letter.
Claire’s handwriting stared back at me.
A handwriting I knew better than my own.
The small curve of the letters.
The way she always pressed harder when she was writing something important.
I had seen that handwriting on grocery lists.
Birthday cards.
Notes she left beside my coffee cup.
And now…
A warning.
“If you are reading this, it means Vanessa found out what I knew.””
My eyes lifted slowly.
Vanessa was standing in the doorway.
She looked different.
Not angry.
Not confident.
Terrified.
That told me everything.
“You knew about this letter,” I said.
Her lips parted.
“I…”
I stood up.
“You knew.””
“No.””
The answer came too fast.
Too desperate.
I looked at Daniel.
He didn’t deny it.
That was worse.
“Both of you,” I said quietly.
My voice scared even me.
“What did Claire know?””
Vanessa stepped into the room.
“Ethan, you don’t understand.””
I laughed.
A broken, empty laugh.
“You keep saying that.””
She stopped.
“You said it downstairs.””
I held up the letter.
“You said it when I found my daughters eating moldy bread.””
I stepped closer.
“You said it when they told me they thought their mother abandoned them.””
My eyes locked onto hers.
“And now you’re saying it because my dead wife left me a warning with your name on it.””
Vanessa’s face tightened.
“Claire was sick.””
I froze.
“What?””
“She wasn’t thinking clearly.””
The words hit me.
Because they sounded familiar.
Not because I believed them.
Because they were the same excuse people used when they wanted to erase someone’s truth.
“She was sick,” Vanessa continued.
“She was scared. Confused. She didn’t know what she was doing.””
I looked at Daniel.
“And you?””
He remained silent.
I shook my head.
“You’re both unbelievable.””
Daniel finally spoke.
“Ethan, listen to me.””
“No.””
I unfolded the letter.
“I’m done listening to people who explain everything except their own actions.””
I looked down.
The paper shook slightly in my hand.
Not because I was afraid.
Because I was about to hear Claire’s voice again.
Even if it was only through ink.
I started reading.
“My dear Ethan…”
The room became silent.
“If you are reading this, something happened that I was afraid of.””
I stopped.
My chest tightened.
Claire had been afraid.
While I was working.
While I was building a future.
My wife had been afraid inside our own home.
I continued.
“I wanted to believe I was wrong. I wanted to believe I was imagining things because grief makes people suspicious.””
I looked up.
Vanessa looked away.
Daniel’s jaw tightened.
I kept reading.
“But after what I found, I can no longer pretend.””
My heart started pounding.
“What did she find?”” I whispered.
Nobody answered.
I continued.
“Ethan, please don’t confront anyone until you know the entire truth. People who are willing to hurt innocent people will do anything to protect themselves.””
My fingers tightened around the paper.
Anything.
The word felt heavier than the rest.
Claire knew.
She knew she was surrounded by dangerous people.
I read the next line.
“The person you trust the most may not be the person who loves you the most.””
The room went still.
My eyes moved between Vanessa and Daniel.
Then I looked at Grant.
Because suddenly another thought entered my mind.
How many people were involved?
How long had this been happening?
I continued.
“Watch the accounts. Watch the documents. Watch the people who suddenly become interested in your company.””
My breathing stopped.
The company.
This wasn’t only about my daughters.
It was bigger.
I looked at Daniel.
“What did you do?””
He didn’t answer.
I looked back at the letter.
The next sentence was written harder.
The ink had pressed into the paper.
“I found proof that someone has been moving money without your knowledge.””
My blood ran cold.
“What?””
Vanessa immediately stepped forward.
“That’s impossible.””
I looked at her.
“Why are you surprised?””
She stopped.
Because she wasn’t surprised.
She was worried.
I looked at Daniel.
“Money from my company?””
Daniel shook his head.
“You’re misunderstanding.””
“No.””
I held the letter.
“My wife wrote this before she died.””
“She was wrong.””
I stared at him.
“You don’t even know what she wrote.””
His expression changed.
A mistake.
A small one.
But I saw it.
“How do you know she was wrong?””
Silence.
Nobody moved.
Daniel realized too late.
He had revealed something.
I walked closer.
“You’ve seen this letter before.””
“No.””
“Yes.””
His face hardened.
“Ethan.””
“No.””
My voice rose.
“You’ve seen it.””
I looked at Vanessa.
“And you have too.””
She didn’t respond.
That was confirmation.
I turned back to the letter.
My hands felt cold.
Claire had hidden this.
Not because she wanted revenge.
Because she wanted to protect me.
I kept reading.
“Ethan, if something happens to me, promise me one thing.””
My throat tightened.
The next line blurred.
I wiped my eyes.
Then read.
“Do not let them convince our girls that I left them.””
I stopped.
The room disappeared.
For a second, I wasn’t in that bedroom.
I was back with Claire.
In the hospital.
Holding her hand.
Telling her she would come home.
Telling her our girls needed her.
And she had looked at me.
Not scared of dying.
Scared of leaving them.
I lowered the letter.
Vanessa watched me.
“You’re twisting this.””
I looked at her.
“You destroyed the exact thing Claire was afraid of.””
Her eyes filled with anger.
“You don’t know what happened.””
“Then tell me.””
She said nothing.
“Tell me why my daughters repeated the same lie Claire warned me about.””
Nothing.
I stepped toward her.
“Tell me why you removed their pictures.””
Her face changed.
A small reaction.
But enough.
“You went into their room.””
I stared.
“You erased their mother.””
Vanessa looked away.
“I was trying to help them move on.””
“No.””
My voice became quiet.
“You were trying to replace her.””
She looked at me.
And for the first time…
I saw the truth.
Not guilt.
Not regret.
Resentment.
She had never wanted to live beside Claire’s memory.
She wanted to defeat it.
I turned toward Daniel.
“And you helped her.””
Daniel sighed.
“You don’t understand the situation.””
“Then explain.””
He walked into the room.
“You think this is about Claire.””
“Isn’t it?””
“No.””
He looked directly at me.
“This is about you.””
I frowned.
“What?””
Daniel lowered his voice.
“You were never supposed to come home tonight.””
The sentence froze the room.
“What did you say?””
He immediately looked away.
A mistake.
Another one.
I stepped closer.
“Repeat that.””
“I said nothing.””
“No.””
I grabbed the letter tighter.
“You said I wasn’t supposed to come home.””
Daniel’s expression hardened.
“You’re twisting words.””
“Am I?””
I looked at Vanessa.
She looked terrified again.
Not because I knew.
Because I was getting close.
“Why wasn’t I supposed to come home?””
Nobody answered.
Then a small voice came from behind me.
“Daddy?””
I turned.
Harper was standing in the hallway.
Her eyes were wide.
She had heard everything.
I immediately moved toward her.
“Sweetheart, go back to bed.””
She shook her head.
“Is Mommy coming back?””
The question broke the room.
Vanessa looked uncomfortable.
Daniel looked away.
I knelt down.
“No.””
Harper’s face fell.
“But you said she didn’t leave.””
“She didn’t.””
“Then where is she?””
I swallowed.
Because there was no easy answer for a three-year-old.
I touched her hand.
“Mommy is somewhere she can’t come back from.””
Harper looked confused.
“Because she’s still waiting?””
My heart stopped.
“What?””
She looked down.
“Vanessa said Mommy left because she wanted to wait somewhere else.””
My entire body went cold.
I slowly stood.
I turned toward Vanessa.
“What exactly did you tell my daughters?””
Vanessa shook her head.
“Ethan…”
“No.””
My voice was calm.
Too calm.
“What exactly did you tell them about Claire?””
She didn’t answer.
Daniel stepped forward.
“This conversation is going nowhere.””
I looked at him.
“Actually, it’s finally going somewhere.””
I picked up my phone.
Daniel noticed.
“What are you doing?””
“Calling someone.””
“Who?””
“The person who should have been here from the beginning.””
Vanessa’s eyes narrowed.
“Ethan.””
I ignored her.
I unlocked my phone.
But before I could make the call…
A notification appeared.
One message.
From an unknown number.
My blood turned cold when I read it.
*You found Claire’s letter. Good. Now find the second one before they do.*
I stared at the screen.
A second one?
My fingers went numb.
Another message appeared immediately.
*Do not trust anyone inside that house. Not Vanessa. Not Daniel. Not even the person who gave you the first warning.*
I looked up.
Slowly.
Because suddenly I had a new question.
Who sent this?
And why did they know I had found Claire’s letter?
The bedroom door behind me creaked.
Everyone turned.
A shadow stood in the hallway.
Someone else had been listening.
Someone who had been in the house the entire time.
Then a voice whispered:
“Ethan…”
I froze.
May you like
Because I recognized it.
And it belonged to the last person I expected to betray me.
