Surprise

Chapter 7

Ruby would not sleep unless I sat on the floor beside her bed.

So I sat.

All night.

At dawn, Evelyn came in with two mugs of cocoa and a blanket around her shoulders.

She climbed onto Ruby’s bed and curled around her sister.

Ruby opened one eye.

“Did Claudia go to jail?”

“Yes,” Evelyn whispered.

“Forever?”

“I hope so.”

Ruby looked at me.

“Can Daddy make forever?”

I swallowed.

“No, baby. But I can tell the truth so judges know what happened.”

She thought about that.

“Mommy would like truth.”

“Yes.”

“She hated when Marco lied about eating cake.”

A laugh broke out of me.

Small.

Painful.

Real.

“She did.”

By noon, Claudia, Marco, and Matteo Leone were charged with kidnapping, assault, conspiracy, evidence tampering, and obstruction.

The murder charge would take more.

The prosecutors warned me.

Old case.

Powerful defendants.

Complicated money trails.

Daniel Cross still needed to testify.

If he could.

I went to see him that afternoon.

Evelyn insisted on coming.

This time, I allowed it.

Daniel Cross was in a private care facility under the false name David Crane.

He sat by a window, thin and pale, one side of his face slack from old trauma.

But when he saw Isabella’s photograph, he cried.

Not loudly.

His tears just fell.

Evelyn placed the photo in his hand.

“Did you know my mom?”

Daniel’s mouth struggled.

“Brave,” he whispered.

Evelyn’s lips trembled.

“Yes.”

I sat across from him.

“Daniel, I’m Alessio Ventresca.”

Fear crossed his face.

I hated that my name could still do that.

“I’m not here to hurt you.”

He looked at Sofia, who stood behind me.

Then at the federal agent beside the door.

His fingers moved on the blanket.

Sofia handed him a tablet with large letters.

Daniel typed slowly.

MARCO DID CAR.

My chest tightened.

“Did he cause Isabella’s crash?”

YES.

Evelyn inhaled sharply.

I reached for her hand.

She took it.

Daniel typed again.

I WAS TOLD DRIVE TRUCK BEHIND HER. SCARE HER. NOT HIT.

He paused, exhausted.

Then continued.

SAW MARCO UNDER CAR BEFORE SHE LEFT.

My hands turned cold.

“Why did the report blame you?”

PAID POLICE. THEN THEY HIT ME. WOKE UP HERE.

Sofia’s jaw clenched.

“Who paid?”

Daniel typed one name.

LEONE.

Matteo.

My father’s fixer.

“Did my father know?”

Daniel looked at me.

His eyes filled with something almost like pity.

He typed slowly.

YOUR FATHER FOUND OUT AFTER. HELPED HIDE. SAID COMPANY FIRST.

Company first.

Family first.

Legacy first.

Everything first except the woman under the overturned car and the daughters waiting at home.

I stood because sitting suddenly felt impossible.

Evelyn looked up at me.

“Grandpa knew?”

I could not protect her from this.

“Yes.”

Her face changed.

Another adult fell from the shelf where children keep their saints.

“I hate this family,” she whispered.

I knelt in front of her.

“Then we build a different one.”

She looked at Daniel.

Then at me.

“How?”

“We start by not lying.”

Daniel raised a trembling hand.

Evelyn took it.

He whispered, “Sorry.”

She began crying.

“You tried to help Mom?”

He nodded.

“Then don’t be sorry for that.”

On the drive home, Evelyn was quiet.

Not the old quiet.

A thinking quiet.

At the cottage, Ruby ran to us and asked if the man knew Mommy.

Evelyn knelt and said, “He helped Mommy be brave.”

Ruby nodded seriously.

“Then he can come to birthday cake.”

Sofia turned away quickly.

Luca cleared his throat.

I almost smiled.

Children have a way of inviting the wounded back into humanity without asking for credentials.

That evening, Rebecca, the prosecutor, came to the cottage.

She laid out the case.

Isabella’s buried box.

Ruby’s toy car footage.

Daniel’s testimony.

Marta’s recording.

Financial transfers.

Matteo’s call.

The kidnapping.

It was enough to hold them.

Maybe enough to convict.

But then she hesitated.

“There is one problem.”

I hated those words.

“What?”

“Claudia is claiming she acted under coercion.”

“From Marco?”

“And your father.”

“My father is dead.”

“She says Edward Ventresca arranged the marriage before Isabella died.”

The room went cold.

Evelyn looked at me.

Ruby stopped coloring.

Rebecca continued.

“Claudia claims she was promised a place in your life before the crash. She says your father planned for Isabella to be removed socially, not killed.”

I gripped the table.

“Removed socially?”

“Divorce scandal. False affair. Custody pressure.”

Sofia closed her eyes.

“That sounds like Edward.”

Rebecca nodded.

“If true, your father helped create the conditions for Isabella’s death even if Marco escalated.”

I looked toward the window.

Outside, the garden at the cottage was small and wild.

Nothing like Isabella’s perfect beds.

Maybe better.

Wild things survive.

“What do you need?”

Rebecca met my eyes.

“Access to your father’s private archive.”

My pulse slowed.

The archive.

A locked vault beneath Ventresca Tower.

My father’s contracts.

His letters.

His sins.

Only one living person besides me had the code.

Marco.

I stood.

“Then we open it before Marco’s people empty it.”

Luca’s phone buzzed.

He read the message and went pale.

“Too late.”

He turned the screen toward me.

May you like

A live security feed showed Ventresca Tower’s archive door wide open.

Inside, fire crawled across the floor.
