Surprise

Chapter 5

The memory card held the night my wife died.

Not all of it.

Enough.

The video came from Ruby’s toy car.

A little blue car with a camera I had bought as a joke because Ruby liked spying on ants.

I had forgotten it existed.

Isabella had not.

Sofia loaded the card on her laptop at the cottage kitchen table while rain tapped the windows.

Evelyn stood beside me.

Ruby slept upstairs.

Marta prayed under her breath.

Luca guarded the door.

The video opened sideways.

A floor.

A rug.

Ruby’s little voice laughing.

Then Isabella appeared, crouching.

Her face filled the screen.

“Hello, my tiny detective,” she whispered. “If Mommy borrows your car, you may charge me one cookie.”

Evelyn made a sound like her heart had cracked.

The video jumped.

Now the toy sat low in the corner of the greenhouse.

Voices.

Marco.

Claudia.

Isabella.

“You forged my signature,” Isabella said.

Marco laughed.

“You’re tired. Grief from your mother’s death made you imagine things.”

“My mother died ten years ago.”

Claudia’s voice cut in.

“You always were dramatic.”

Then paper slapped against a table.

Isabella said, “I have copies. Insurance fraud. Vendor laundering. The revised trust. Daniel Cross’s statement.”

Marco’s voice changed.

“You spoke to Daniel?”

“He came to me because he was scared of you.”

Claudia hissed, “He was paid to keep his mouth shut.”

“And he didn’t,” Isabella said. “Neither will I.”

The screen shook.

Someone had kicked the toy.

For a moment, only darkness.

Then the camera showed the greenhouse door from beneath a shelf.

Marco stepped close to Isabella.

“You think Alessio will choose you over blood?”

Isabella’s voice broke, but did not bend.

“I think he will choose our daughters.”

Claudia laughed.

“That’s touching.”

Then she said the words that turned my blood to ice.

“Then make sure he never has to choose.”

The video cut.

The next file opened outside.

Rain on stone.

Headlights.

Isabella’s car in the driveway.

Marco at the driver’s side.

He bent near the front wheel.

Claudia stood beneath an umbrella, watching.

My daughter Evelyn was only twelve now, but even she understood.

She covered her mouth.

“No.”

I turned the laptop away.

She grabbed my wrist.

“No. I need to know.”

I hated it.

I respected it.

The video blurred as rain hit the lens.

Marco straightened and said, “If Daniel talks, he goes under too.”

Claudia answered, “Daniel won’t talk after tonight.”

Sofia paused the video.

Nobody breathed.

Daniel Cross had not caused the crash.

He had been another target.

My brother had not only murdered my wife.

He had nearly killed the witness and buried him alive in paperwork.

I walked outside before I broke something.

The rain was cold.

I stood under the porch light and tried to breathe.

Luca followed.

“You want me to find Marco.”

“Yes.”

“You want him alive?”

I looked at him.

For one second, I did not know.

That scared me.

“Yes,” I said at last. “Alive. I want my daughters to see the law can do what revenge only pretends to fix.”

Luca nodded.

“Good answer.”

Sofia came outside.

“The police have the files. They’re issuing warrants.”

“For Marco and Claudia?”

“And Matteo Leone.”

My father’s fixer.

Good.

Then her voice softened.

“Alessio, there’s more.”

Of course there was.

She held Isabella’s letter to me.

“I think you should read yours.”

I did not want to.

Which meant I had to.

I opened it on the porch with wet fingers.

My Alessio,

If you are reading this, I am sorry for leaving you with pain and questions. But I need you to understand something. Your family taught you that love means loyalty without doubt. That is not love. That is obedience.

I closed my eyes.

I heard her voice in every word.

Marco will use your guilt. Your father will use your duty. Claudia will use your loneliness. Do not let any of them turn you away from our girls.

Tears mixed with rain on my face.

If I die, do not become a monument to grief. Become a father in motion. Eat dinner. Listen when Evelyn goes quiet. Believe Ruby when she says someone is mean. Keep the garden only if it helps them remember joy. Tear it up if truth is under it.

A sob tore out of me.

She knew.

She knew even that.

The final lines blurred.

I loved you. I still do, wherever love goes when bodies fail. But your daughters need more than your sorrow. They need your presence. Give them that, and you will have given me peace.

I folded the letter against my chest.

For the first time since her funeral, I stopped asking Isabella to come back and started hearing what she had left me to do.

My phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

Marco’s voice came through.

“You found the toy.”

I went still.

“Where are you?”

“Close enough.”

Luca reached for his radio.

Marco laughed softly.

“You always were slow to understand, little brother. Isabella wasn’t the only one who hid cameras.”

My blood chilled.

“What does that mean?”

“Check the nursery at the cottage.”

I ran.

Upstairs, Ruby’s bed was empty.

May you like

The window was open.

And on her pillow lay a fresh lavender stem.
