Surprise

Chapter 8

The day Marcus received formal recognition of his parental rights and a revised parenting arrangement, Lily wore a yellow dress with tiny white flowers.

She carried her stuffed bunny into the courthouse.

Her braids were tied with matching ribbons.

I stood beside her while Marcus spoke with his attorney.

Evelyn waited nearby.

Renee had traveled from North Carolina.

For the first time, everyone who loved Lily was gathered in one place.

Not to argue.

Not to hide.

But to support her.

The judge reviewed the guardianship history and the new agreements.

The court approved a plan that allowed Marcus to become an active parent while preserving Lily's important relationships with Evelyn and Renee.

The transition would be gradual.

Counselors would help.

And Lily's emotional well-being would remain the priority.

I watched Marcus listen carefully.

He wasn't demanding immediate control.

He wasn't insisting that money made him the better parent.

He was learning to put Lily first.

When we stepped outside, he knelt beside her.

"Hey, princess."

She smiled.

"Hi, Daddy."

He took her hands.

"Guess what?"

"What?"

"We're going to spend a lot more time together."

Her eyes widened.

"Really?"

He nodded.

"Really."

She hugged him.

Then looked toward Evelyn.

"Grandma can still come?"

Marcus smiled.

"Of course."

"And Aunt Renee?"

"Yes."

She turned toward me.

"And Nia?"

My heart tightened.

Marcus looked at me.

Then smiled.

"If Nia wants to."

I knelt beside Lily.

"I do."

She grinned.

"Good!"

Then she hugged all of us.

For a moment, I felt something beautiful settling into place.

Lily didn't have to lose one person to gain another.

She could be loved by many people.

And that was exactly what Danielle had wanted.

Meanwhile, the financial case continued.

Patricia denied the allegations at first.

Her attorney challenged the records.

But investigators had obtained bank statements, emails, and testimony from several people involved.

The evidence supported serious charges involving unauthorized trust transactions.

Eventually, Patricia entered a guilty plea to financial offenses.

The court imposed a sentence and restitution obligations.

Some assets were recovered.

Other funds remained subject to civil recovery.

Marcus didn't celebrate.

He sat quietly after the hearing.

I held his hand.

"How are you feeling?"

He looked exhausted.

"Sad."

I nodded.

He continued.

"She was family."

"I know."

"But she hurt everyone."

I squeezed his hand.

"Yes."

He looked at me.

"Danielle never deserved what happened."

My eyes filled.

"No."

He swallowed.

"And Lily never deserved to lose those years."

I leaned against him.

For a long moment, neither of us spoke.

Then he whispered:

"I want to do something for Danielle."

I looked up.

"What?"

He took a breath.

"Something that honors her."

I smiled faintly.

"Tell me."

He looked toward Lily, who was playing nearby.

"I want to establish a scholarship for young women studying journalism."

My eyes filled.

"Marcus..."

He continued.

"Women who want to investigate wrongdoing and speak the truth."

I smiled through tears.

"Danielle would've loved that."

He nodded.

"I hope so."

Over the following months, we worked with Renee to create the Danielle Brooks Memorial Scholarship.

Renee helped us understand her sister's dreams.

She showed us old notebooks.

Articles.

Photographs.

Danielle had wanted to become an investigative journalist.

She believed ordinary people deserved to know the truth.

I found myself admiring her more with every story.

She was brave.

Determined.

And deeply loving.

I began to understand that loving Marcus didn't mean competing with Danielle's memory.

She would always be part of his life.

And she would always be Lily's mother.

I wasn't trying to replace her.

I wanted to help preserve what she'd given them.

One evening, Lily asked me to help with a school project.

She needed to draw her family tree.

We sat at the kitchen table.

She held a box of crayons.

"Miss Nia?"

I smiled.

"Yes?"

"Can I put Mommy Danielle on it?"

My throat tightened.

"Of course."

She drew a woman with curly hair.

Then a little girl.

Then Marcus.

Then Evelyn.

Then Renee.

She paused.

"Where do you go?"

I smiled.

"Wherever you want, sweetheart."

She thought carefully.

Then drew me beside Marcus.

I felt tears rise.

"Why there?"

She smiled.

"Because you love Daddy."

I laughed softly.

"Yes."

"And you love me."

I swallowed.

"Very much."

She grinned.

"Then you're family too."

I pulled her into my arms.

"Thank you, Lily."

She hugged me tightly.

For the first time, I understood what it meant to join a family with a complicated past.

It wasn't about erasing anyone.

It was about making space for everyone who belonged.

That evening, Marcus came home and found us finishing the project.

He stared at the drawing.

His eyes filled.

"What's this?"

Lily smiled.

"My family tree!"

He knelt beside her.

"It's beautiful."

She pointed toward Danielle.

"That's Mommy."

Marcus nodded.

"Yes."

Then she pointed toward me.

"And that's Nia."

He smiled.

"I see."

Lily looked at him.

"Daddy?"

"Yes?"

"Can I have two moms?"

The room went quiet.

I felt my heart pounding.

Marcus looked at me.

Then back at Lily.

He smiled gently.

"You can love as many people as your heart has room for."

Lily grinned.

"Good."

Then she returned to coloring.

I turned away to hide my tears.

Marcus quietly took my hand.

And in that moment, I knew something important.

Our wedding had been postponed.

Our future was uncertain.

But Lily was healing.

And that mattered more than anything.
