Surprise

Chapter 2

The five black sedans stopped beside the marble terrace.

Every door opened.

But nobody rushed toward Olivia.

Nobody shouted.

Nobody threatened her.

Instead, several men and women in dark business suits stepped out carrying leather folders, tablets, and identification.

At the front was a tall Black man with silver-framed glasses.

His name was Daniel Brooks.

He had worked with my family for more than fifteen years.

Olivia stared at him.

"Daniel?"

He stopped.

"Mrs. Sterling."

Her expression changed from confusion to alarm.

"What are you doing here?"

Daniel looked toward me.

"Ms. Bennett requested our presence."

Olivia turned so quickly that her diamond necklace swung against her chest.

"Ms. Bennett?"

I stepped forward.

"Yes."

Daniel approached.

"Clara, the emergency review has been initiated."

I nodded.

"Thank you."

Ethan stared between us.

"What emergency review?"

I ignored him.

My attention was on my parents.

Mom was sitting beneath a canopy with a towel wrapped around her shoulders.

Dad stood beside her.

His right hand was pressed against his upper arm.

I hurried toward them.

"Mom!"

She looked up.

"Baby, I'm okay."

But her voice was trembling.

I crouched beside her.

"You're freezing."

She tried to smile.

"That water was colder than I expected."

I almost cried.

Even after being humiliated, my mother was trying to comfort me.

Dad touched my shoulder.

"Clara, don't worry about us."

I looked at him.

"Your arm."

He shook his head.

"It's nothing."

I gently touched his wrist.

He winced.

My stomach tightened.

"Dad, you need a doctor."

He started protesting.

Then Mom interrupted.

"James, don't argue."

For the first time that afternoon, I almost smiled.

An emergency medical team was already on its way.

One of the hotel supervisors had called for assistance.

Daniel approached quietly.

"Clara, the cars are available to transport your parents whenever the medical team clears them."

I nodded.

"Thank you."

Then Olivia's voice rang across the terrace.

"WHAT IS GOING ON?"

I stood.

She was storming toward us.

Ethan followed.

His expression was pale.

Daniel stepped between Olivia and my parents.

"Mrs. Sterling, please give them space."

Olivia stared at him.

"You work for me!"

Daniel remained calm.

"Not anymore."

Silence.

I watched her expression collapse.

"What?"

He opened his folder.

"Sterling Hospitality's lenders and principal investors have been notified of serious governance concerns."

Ethan looked stunned.

"Governance concerns?"

Daniel nodded.

"Yes."

Olivia began laughing nervously.

"This is ridiculous."

I looked directly at her.

"Is it?"

She pointed at me.

"You think a few fancy cars make you important?"

I took a breath.

"No."

Then I continued.

"But the documents inside those cars might."

Olivia went still.

Ethan stepped forward.

"Clara, what are you talking about?"

I looked at the man I had married less than an hour earlier.

For three years, I had asked him to defend me.

To challenge his mother's insults.

To stop treating my parents like an embarrassment.

And every time, he told me to be patient.

Now he wanted answers.

I spoke quietly.

"Do you remember when I told you my family worked in private investments?"

He frowned.

"Yes."

"And you laughed?"

His face changed.

I remembered that evening clearly.

We were sitting at a restaurant.

He had asked what my parents did.

I said they managed family investments and several charitable programs.

Ethan smiled.

Then said, "Everyone calls themselves an investor these days."

I didn't correct him.

Because I had learned something long before meeting Ethan.

People who cared about me didn't need to know the size of my family's balance sheet.

I looked at Olivia.

"You never asked what my parents actually owned."

She scoffed.

"Because I didn't care."

I nodded.

"Exactly."

Then I turned toward Daniel.

"Please explain the Sterling Holdings position."

He opened another folder.

"Mrs. Sterling, for the past eighteen months, Bennett Family Capital has held a significant secured investment position in Sterling Hospitality Group."

Olivia stared.

"What?"

Daniel continued.

"Following your company's debt restructuring, Bennett Family Capital became the largest creditor group and acquired substantial ownership interests through negotiated agreements."

Ethan's face went pale.

I watched him struggle to understand.

Then he whispered, "Bennett?"

I nodded.

"My family."

Olivia laughed sharply.

"Impossible."

Daniel handed her a copy of the ownership summary.

She glanced at the first page.

Then stopped breathing.

I watched her eyes move across the numbers.

Her lips parted.

She looked at me.

Then at my parents.

"No."

I said nothing.

She turned toward Daniel.

"This can't be right."

He remained calm.

"The documents have been executed and recorded."

Olivia began shaking.

"But we were told the investment group was private."

I nodded.

"It was."

Ethan stepped toward me.

"Clara, why didn't you tell me?"

I looked at him.

"Would it have changed how you treated my parents?"

He hesitated.

I waited.

Then he whispered, "That's not fair."

I laughed bitterly.

"Not fair?"

I pointed toward my father.

"He just climbed out of a swimming pool after your mother shoved him."

My voice cracked.

"And you didn't even move."

Ethan looked away.

I continued.

"You stood there holding champagne."

He swallowed.

"Clara—"

"Then you told me not to make a scene."

Tears burned my eyes.

For a moment, I wanted to scream.

Instead, I looked toward Olivia.

"Your company has been under financial review for months."

She went pale.

I continued.

"The investment agreements contain provisions requiring disclosure of material misconduct and allowing specified protective action when serious risks arise."

Daniel nodded.

"We're exercising the contractual rights available to the investor group."

Olivia stared.

"What rights?"

He answered carefully.

"Immediate review of management authority, preservation of records, and a special meeting of the appropriate governing bodies."

Olivia's mouth fell open.

I stepped closer.

"Nobody is taking your hotels tonight because you insulted my parents."

She looked confused.

I continued.

"But your company has been hiding financial problems."

Daniel opened another folder.

"And today's incident has created additional legal and reputational concerns."

Olivia turned toward Ethan.

"Do something!"

Ethan looked helpless.

I watched the man who had never challenged his mother suddenly realize that he couldn't talk his way out of everything.

Then the medical team arrived.

I turned away from them.

My father needed me.

As the paramedics examined Dad's shoulder, Daniel approached quietly.

"Clara, there's something else."

I looked up.

"What?"

His expression was grave.

"The independent financial review uncovered additional transfers."

My stomach tightened.

"What kind?"

He hesitated.

"Payments from Sterling Hospitality accounts to entities connected to Olivia's personal advisers."

I frowned.

"How much?"

Daniel lowered his voice.

"Nearly eleven million dollars."

For a moment, I couldn't breathe.

Then he continued.

"And Clara, one of those accounts was used to make payments to Ethan."

I stared toward my husband.

He was standing beside Olivia.

Whispering urgently.

May you like

And suddenly, I realized I hadn't simply married a coward.

I might have married a man who had been hiding financial secrets from me for years.
