Chapter 3

I had suspected Marcus.
I had suspected Vanessa.
But seeing Evelyn in that hallway felt like someone had pressed a knife against my heart.
For four years, I called that woman Grandma Evelyn.
She insisted on it.
She said I was the daughter she never had.
She invited me to Sunday dinners.
Sent me birthday gifts.
Held my hand after my father died.
And when I miscarried two years earlier, she sat beside my hospital bed and cried with me.
Now I watched her standing beside my husband and his mistress.
Danielle paused the footage.
Arthur stared at his wife.
"Play it."
His voice sounded broken.
The recording continued.
Evelyn accepted the folder from Marcus.
Vanessa glanced toward the ceiling camera.
Then Marcus pointed to a door marked SECURITY CONTROL.
A man in a dark uniform appeared.
I recognized him.
Calvin Ross.
The assistant security manager.
Marcus handed Calvin something small.
An envelope.
Calvin opened it.
Looked inside.
Then tucked it into his jacket.
My stomach tightened.
"Money?" I whispered.
Danielle shook her head.
"We don't yet know what was inside."
Arthur leaned forward.
"Keep going."
The footage showed Calvin opening the control room door.
Marcus and Vanessa followed him inside.
Evelyn remained outside.
She checked the hallway.
Then she walked toward the ballroom.
Danielle stopped the video.
"There are additional recordings from the control room entrance and an independently preserved system log."
I looked at her.
"Did they try to erase the cameras?"
"Someone attempted to disable recording on several devices and alter the retention settings."
My chest tightened.
"Did it work?"
"No. The primary event recordings were mirrored to a separate evidence server before the changes were attempted."
I exhaled.
Months earlier, I had approved funding for an upgraded security system.
Marcus complained it was unnecessary.
He said the company already spent too much on compliance.
I insisted.
Now that decision might have saved us.
Arthur covered his face.
"Evelyn knew."
Danielle spoke gently.
"We should establish what she knew before reaching conclusions."
I nodded.
But my chest hurt.
I remembered Evelyn asking me to trust Marcus.
Telling me marriage required patience.
Suggesting that Vanessa was simply a family friend.
Had she been helping them all along?
Then the conference room door opened.
Evelyn stood outside.
Her pearl necklace was crooked.
Her face looked pale.
Arthur rose.
"Evelyn."
She looked toward the display.
Then at the frozen image of herself in the corridor.
Her expression collapsed.
"Oh, Arthur."
He gripped his cane.
"What were you doing?"
She stepped inside.
"I can explain."
I stood.
"Then please do."
Evelyn looked at me.
Tears filled her eyes.
"Nia, sweetheart—"
"Don't call me that."
She stopped.
My voice shook.
"I loved you."
"I know."
"I trusted you."
She covered her mouth.
"Please."
Arthur struck his cane against the floor.
"Answer the question."
Evelyn sat down slowly.
"Marcus came to me last month."
I stared at her.
"He said the company was in trouble."
Arthur frowned.
"What kind of trouble?"
"He said Nia was working with outside investors to remove him."
I almost laughed.
"Marcus told you I was betraying the company?"
She nodded.
"He showed me documents."
Danielle leaned forward.
"What documents?"
"Financial reports. Emails. A proposed board resolution."
I looked toward the display.
"And you believed him?"
Evelyn lowered her eyes.
"He's my grandson."
The words hurt more than I expected.
I wasn't her blood.
Marcus was.
And apparently, that was enough.
Arthur shook his head.
"Being our grandson doesn't make him honest."
Evelyn began crying.
"I know that now."
I took a breath.
"Why were you in the hallway?"
She looked frightened.
"Marcus asked me to bring him a folder from the chairman's office."
Arthur went still.
"What folder?"
She swallowed.
"The sealed board packet."
Silence filled the room.
I looked at Danielle.
Her expression had changed.
"Was the packet opened?"
Evelyn nodded.
"Marcus said some pages needed to be replaced because of a printing error."
Arthur slowly lowered himself into a chair.
I felt sick.
The sealed board packet contained official documents prepared for the next morning's directors' meeting.
Among them was a report concerning suspicious acquisitions.
And a proposed emergency resolution to suspend Marcus's executive authority pending investigation.
Marcus had somehow discovered it.
Then he had used Evelyn to obtain the packet before Arthur saw it.
"What pages did he replace?" Danielle asked.
Evelyn shook her head.
"I don't know."
Arthur stared at her.
"You took confidential board materials and handed them to Marcus?"
"He said he was protecting the company!"
I stepped forward.
"Did he mention Vanessa?"
Evelyn hesitated.
Then she nodded.
"He said she was helping him."
I felt the familiar pain of betrayal rise inside me.
Evelyn looked at me desperately.
"Nia, I didn't know about the affair."
I wanted to believe her.
But believing someone had become difficult.
I looked toward Danielle.
"Can we compare the documents?"
She nodded.
"We have the originals retained in the legal archive."
Arthur straightened.
"Do it."
Danielle opened two files.
The first showed the authentic board resolution.
It proposed temporarily removing Marcus's authority while an independent review examined financial transactions.
The second showed the version recovered from the packet after Marcus accessed it.
The resolution had been replaced.
Now it appeared to authorize Marcus to terminate me.
And approve an immediate transfer of key financial controls to his office.
My hands turned cold.
He wasn't simply trying to humiliate me.
He had attempted to manufacture authority to take control of the company.
Arthur whispered, "He forged a board decision."
Danielle answered carefully.
"The documents appear to have been altered. We need to verify their origin and execution."
Then her laptop chimed.
She opened an encrypted message from the external auditor.
Her expression tightened.
"Nia."
I looked at her.
"What?"
"The auditor has located an outgoing payment instruction connected to the altered authorization."
"How much?"
Danielle hesitated.
"Twenty-four million dollars."
The room became silent.
I stared at the screen.
Then I asked the only question that mattered.
"Where was the money supposed to go?"
May you like
Danielle looked directly at me.
"To a company controlled by Vanessa."
