Surprise

Chapter 5

I spent the next twenty-four hours afraid to answer my phone.

Every time it rang, I imagined hearing that investigators had found Caleb.

Or worse.

That something terrible had happened to him.

I tried to work.

I couldn't.

I tried to sleep.

I couldn't.

Finally, I drove to my father's house.

Arthur Bennett was sixty-four, with silver hair and a quiet voice.

He had spent his life building a small construction supply business before retiring.

He opened the door and immediately noticed my face.

"Marcus?"

I stepped inside.

Then began crying.

Dad pulled me into his arms.

For a long time, I couldn't speak.

He held me without asking questions.

Finally, I told him everything.

Lily.

Rose.

Amara.

Caleb.

Vanessa.

The hidden email.

The forged story that kept Amara and me apart.

Dad sat across from me, stunned.

When I finished, he covered his mouth.

"You're telling me I have a seven-year-old granddaughter?"

I nodded.

Tears streamed down his face.

"And nobody told us?"

I shook my head.

He looked away.

For several moments, he was silent.

Then he whispered, "That little girl has been growing up without us."

My throat tightened.

"I know."

Dad began crying.

I had rarely seen him cry.

Not even when his business nearly failed.

But now he sat with his hands over his face, grieving years he could never recover.

Then he looked up.

"Where is she?"

"At the hospital."

He stood.

"Then take me to meet my granddaughter."

I smiled through my tears.

For the first time in days, I felt something other than fear.

Hope.

That afternoon, Dad met Lily.

She was sitting beside Rebecca when we entered.

I crouched beside her.

"Lily, there's someone I'd like you to meet."

She looked curious.

"Who?"

I smiled.

"My dad."

Her eyes widened.

"Your daddy?"

I nodded.

She looked toward Arthur.

He was standing a few steps away, holding a small stuffed dinosaur.

His hands trembled.

"Hello, Lily."

She stared at him.

Then whispered, "Grandpa?"

Dad covered his mouth.

Tears filled his eyes.

"Yes, sweetheart."

Lily smiled.

Then she saw the dinosaur.

Her eyes brightened.

"Is that for Caleb?"

Dad nodded.

"I thought he might like it."

Lily began crying.

She stepped forward and hugged him.

Dad knelt carefully.

Then wrapped his arms around her.

I stood beside them, crying silently.

Three generations.

Finally together.

But one child was still missing.

That evening, Detective Brooks called.

Investigators had located the residence outside Macon.

They had obtained the necessary legal authority to search the property.

My heart pounded.

"Did you find Caleb?"

There was a pause.

Then the detective answered.

"Not yet."

My stomach dropped.

He continued.

"However, we've recovered clothing and personal items consistent with a young boy staying there."

I closed my eyes.

Caleb had been there.

"Where did they take him?"

"We're tracing the next location."

My hands tightened.

Then he said something worse.

"Lorraine claims Denise collected him two days ago."

I stared at the wall.

Two days.

While I was searching.

Someone had moved him again.

I felt sick.

The detective asked whether Vanessa had ever mentioned a vacation property in Alabama.

I shook my head.

Then remembered something.

Vanessa once told me her family owned an old farmhouse near the Georgia-Alabama border.

She said nobody used it anymore.

My heart jumped.

I gave him the information.

He thanked me.

Then ended the call.

I sat alone in my father's kitchen.

My hands were shaking.

Dad approached.

"Any news?"

I told him.

His expression tightened.

Then he took my hand.

"Marcus, listen to me."

I looked up.

"You're doing everything you can."

I swallowed.

"It doesn't feel like enough."

He nodded.

"I know."

Then he said something I'll never forget.

"Being a father doesn't mean you can control everything."

My eyes filled with tears.

"It means you keep showing up even when you're frightened."

I covered my face.

Dad held my shoulder.

"And you're showing up."

The next morning, Olivia Grant called.

She had reviewed the available records concerning Amara's temporary caregiving agreement.

The document appeared to authorize short-term assistance from a named caregiver.

It did not automatically transfer permanent custody.

And it did not give Denise the right to disappear with Caleb.

I closed my eyes.

"Then they had no right to move him."

Olivia answered carefully.

"The authorities are examining the circumstances and the validity of all documents."

I nodded.

"Okay."

Then she explained something else.

The proposed guardianship paperwork contained a statement claiming Amara was permanently unable to care for her children.

My stomach twisted.

"That's not true."

Olivia nodded.

"Her doctors expect recovery."

I swallowed.

"Who wrote that statement?"

She hesitated.

"That's under investigation."

I looked toward the window.

Vanessa and her relatives had built an entire story around Amara being unable to care for her children.

A story that could justify separating them.

I felt cold.

Then Olivia continued.

"Marcus, there's another issue involving Vanessa."

My heart tightened.

"What?"

"Her attorney has contacted us."

I frowned.

"Why?"

"She wants to speak with you."

I stared.

"About what?"

Olivia paused.

"She claims she knows where Caleb is."

I stood immediately.

"Then tell the police!"

"That's what we're arranging."

I took a breath.

I wanted to shout.

I wanted to demand that Vanessa stop turning a missing child into leverage.

Instead, I forced myself to remain calm.

"Olivia, I won't negotiate with someone while Caleb is missing."

She nodded.

"That's appropriate."

I swallowed.

"She needs to give investigators everything she knows."

Olivia agreed.

Later that afternoon, Detective Brooks called again.

Vanessa had been interviewed.

She admitted knowing that Denise and Lorraine had been involved in Caleb's temporary placement.

But she denied knowing his current location.

I felt sick.

"Then why did she claim she knew?"

The detective paused.

"She provided information about a property where he may have been taken."

My heart jumped.

"Where?"

"Near Opelika, Alabama."

I closed my eyes.

The old farmhouse.

The same place I'd remembered.

Then he continued.

"We're coordinating with local authorities."

I nodded.

"Please."

For the next several hours, I waited.

I sat beside Lily at the hospital.

She was coloring a picture of a dinosaur.

I held her hand.

Neither of us spoke much.

Then my phone rang.

Detective Brooks.

I answered immediately.

"Did you find him?"

A pause.

Then he spoke.

"Mr. Bennett, officers located a young boy at the property."

My heart stopped.

"Is he okay?"

"He appears physically unharmed, and he's being evaluated."

I covered my mouth.

Tears streamed down my face.

"Is it Caleb?"

The detective took a breath.

"We're confirming his identity, but he matches the description."

I began sobbing.

Lily looked up.

"Marcus?"

I couldn't speak.

She stared at my tears.

"Did you find him?"

I nodded.

"They found a boy who may be Caleb."

Lily dropped her crayons.

Then threw her arms around me.

We held each other, crying.

But Detective Brooks wasn't finished.

"Mr. Bennett, there's something else."

My stomach tightened.

"What?"

"The boy was found with a woman who says she was paid to keep him there."

I stared ahead.

"Paid by who?"

The detective paused.

"She provided a name."

My hands began shaking.

"Whose name?"

He answered quietly.

"Vanessa Coleman."

May you like

And suddenly, the woman I had almost married was no longer simply hiding a secret.

She was at the center of a possible scheme that had separated three children from their mother.
