Surprise

Chapter 1

Vanessa slammed her leather menu onto the marble table so hard that every wineglass rattled.

"Tell your wife to stop embarrassing me! Marcus ALWAYS pays for my dinner!"

The entire private dining room went silent.

I sat beside my husband, wearing the bronze dress he'd bought me for our anniversary, and watched his younger sister point at me as though I were some stranger who had wandered into the wrong restaurant.

My name is Nia Bennett.

I was thirty-two years old, married to Marcus Bennett for six years, and absolutely exhausted from pretending his sister's disrespect didn't bother me.

Across the table, Vanessa leaned back in her chair.

Her long ponytail swung over one shoulder.

Diamonds glittered around her neck.

She wore a black designer dress that probably cost more than my first car payment.

And apparently, she expected my husband to pay for all of it.

Again.

"Vanessa," I said calmly, "nobody is embarrassing you."

She laughed.

"Oh, please. You've been making little comments all evening."

I took a sip of water.

"I asked the waiter for separate checks."

"Exactly!"

She turned toward Marcus.

"Are you hearing this? Your wife is treating me like some random person off the street!"

Marcus looked confused.

He had spent most of dinner talking business with his father at the opposite end of the table.

"What happened?"

Vanessa pointed at me again.

"Your wife thinks I should pay for my own dinner."

I smiled.

"That's correct."

Our waiter approached with three expensive steaks balanced on a serving tray.

He placed Vanessa's plate in front of her.

She barely acknowledged him.

"And bring a bottle of your premium champagne," she announced. "The expensive one."

I looked up.

"Separate check for that too, please."

Vanessa burst into laughter.

"I'm FAMILY, Nia. Marcus will pay."

The waiter glanced nervously between us.

Marcus touched my arm.

"Baby, what's going on?"

I looked at my husband.

Marcus was thirty-eight, successful, generous, and loyal to a fault.

He had built a thriving commercial property company from the ground up.

He helped his parents.

He paid his younger sister's college tuition.

He bought her first car.

And whenever Vanessa got into financial trouble, Marcus somehow became responsible for rescuing her.

For years, I'd stayed quiet.

Not because I agreed.

Because I loved him.

But three days earlier, I'd discovered something that changed everything.

I reached into my handbag and took out my phone.

"Marcus, I need you to look at this."

I slid it toward him.

He frowned.

The screen showed several transactions from one of his personal credit cards.

Luxury shopping.

Hotel reservations.

Designer boutiques.

A jewelry store.

And one particularly expensive restaurant bill.

All connected to Vanessa.

Marcus leaned closer.

"Where did these come from?"

"Your card statements."

He looked at me.

"Why were you checking those?"

"Because our bank contacted me about unusual charges."

Vanessa suddenly leaned forward.

"Why are you whispering?"

Neither of us answered.

Marcus scrolled through the transactions.

His expression hardened.

I watched the change happen.

Confusion.

Recognition.

Then anger.

"Vanessa," he said.

She raised an eyebrow.

"What?"

"Did you use my credit card?"

She laughed.

"Marcus, seriously?"

"Answer me."

Her smile weakened.

"Sometimes you let me use it. Why are we acting like that's new?"

I felt something twist inside my chest.

There it was.

The excuse I had heard for six years.

Sometimes.

A little help.

Just family.

Marcus looked at the waiter.

"Can I have the bill, please?"

The waiter hurried away.

Vanessa rolled her eyes.

"Thank God. Finally."

When the bill arrived, Marcus opened the leather folder.

He studied the total.

Then he closed it and placed it directly in front of his sister.

"Tonight, you're paying for yourself."

Vanessa stared at the folder.

Then she laughed.

"That's funny."

Marcus didn't smile.

"I'm serious."

Her expression collapsed.

"You can't be serious!"

"I am."

She looked around the table.

Our mother-in-law, Celeste, stopped eating.

Walter, Marcus's father, lowered his wineglass.

Several cousins exchanged uncomfortable glances.

Vanessa pointed at me.

"She made you say that!"

I shook my head.

"No. Your choices brought us here."

"Stay out of this!"

Marcus leaned forward.

"Don't speak to my wife like that."

Vanessa froze.

It was the first time in years I'd heard him defend me against her without immediately apologizing afterward.

I reached into my handbag again.

This time, I removed a printed bank statement.

I placed it on the table.

"And while we're discussing money, explain the four thousand eight hundred dollars you charged to Marcus's account last month."

The color drained from Vanessa's face.

Her eyes moved across the paper.

I watched her recognize the transaction.

A payment to a luxury apartment management company.

Four thousand eight hundred dollars.

Not groceries.

Not medicine.

Not an emergency.

A private payment she'd never mentioned to anyone.

Marcus picked up the statement.

His expression changed.

He looked at the account number.

Then the date.

Then the description.

"Vanessa?"

She didn't answer.

My husband slowly turned toward her.

"You told me that card was stolen."

The silence became unbearable.

I remembered the morning Marcus discovered his credit card missing.

Vanessa had been visiting our house that weekend.

She helped us prepare for a charity fundraiser.

The next morning, Marcus couldn't find the card he normally kept in his desk.

Vanessa insisted someone must have taken it.

She even helped him search.

Marcus canceled the card.

He filed a missing-card report.

And he told the bank he didn't recognize several pending transactions.

But the bank's investigation revealed that at least one charge had been authenticated using information from his account.

Marcus assumed it was a complicated fraud case.

I wasn't convinced.

Not after seeing Vanessa wearing a new diamond bracelet.

Not after she suddenly moved into an expensive apartment.

And certainly not after I found a payment matching the exact amount of her security deposit and first month's rent.

I looked directly at her.

"Tell him the truth."

Vanessa gripped the edge of the table.

For a moment, I thought she might confess.

Instead, she looked toward her mother.

"Mom."

Celeste's face tightened.

"Vanessa, what have you done?"

My sister-in-law shook her head.

"Nothing!"

Marcus placed the statement on the marble table.

"You told me someone stole my card."

She swallowed.

"I thought somebody did."

"Then explain this payment."

Her mouth opened.

No words came out.

I watched a tear roll down her cheek.

For one brief moment, I almost felt sorry for her.

Then she whispered something that made my blood run cold.

"Marcus, if you keep asking questions, you're going to find out things about this family you were never supposed to know."

My husband went completely still.

"What does that mean?"

Vanessa looked toward Walter.

May you like

Her father's face had turned pale.

And suddenly, I realized the missing credit card might not be the only secret sitting at our dinner table.
