Surprise

Chapter 2

The sound of the locks echoed through the mansion.

Heavy.

Final.

One door after another.

Click.

Click.

Click.

The guests turned pale.

No one moved toward the exits.

No one asked if Alessandro had the right to trap three hundred powerful people inside his home.

They all knew better.

Vanessa stepped back.

“Alessandro,” she said, laughing weakly. “This is insane. You cannot humiliate me because a servant’s child babbled nonsense.”

He did not look at her.

“Marco.”

A tall man in a black suit stepped forward.

“Yes, sir.”

“Take two women from security. Search Miss Cole’s suite. Closet first.”

Vanessa’s face drained of color.

“No.”

That one word told everyone more than a confession.

Alessandro’s eyes finally returned to her.

“No?”

Her lips trembled.

“I mean, you don’t need to do that. I can explain.”

“You will.”

He turned to another guard.

“Bring Dr. Bellini.”

A gray-haired man near the bar stiffened.

I recognized him.

The Moretti family doctor.

He had come to the mansion twice when Alessandro had migraines he refused to admit were migraines.

The doctor stepped forward slowly.

Vanessa grabbed Alessandro’s arm.

“You cannot ask me to prove my pregnancy in front of these people.”

“I am not asking,” Alessandro said.

A shiver went through the ballroom.

I pulled Emma closer.

Her little body felt too warm.

I wanted out.

I wanted air.

But every door was locked, and every person was watching us like we had become part of the entertainment.

Vanessa turned on me.

“You did this.”

I swallowed.

“No.”

“You think he’ll protect you?” she hissed. “You think men like him protect maids?”

Alessandro’s head turned slightly.

Vanessa saw it and stopped.

Marco and the security women returned sooner than I expected.

One of them carried a box.

White.

Covered in tiny blue flowers.

My knees nearly gave out.

Emma pointed at it.

“That one,” she whispered.

The ballroom exploded in murmurs.

Vanessa’s mother gasped.

Her father stepped forward.

“This is a misunderstanding.”

Alessandro lifted one finger.

The man stopped.

Marco placed the box on a table.

Inside was the silicone belly.

Perfect skin tone.

Curved.

Expensive.

Fake.

Beside it was a receipt from a private medical theater supplier.

Alessandro stared at it.

The room held its breath.

Vanessa began crying.

Real tears now.

“It was for later,” she said. “I was going to tell you in private first. I only wore it tonight because I wanted the announcement to feel real.”

Alessandro’s voice was quiet.

“Are you pregnant?”

She pressed both hands to her mouth.

“Alessandro, I love you.”

“Are you pregnant?”

She looked around for help.

No one moved.

“No,” she whispered.

The word landed like a bomb.

The guests began talking all at once.

A senator cursed.

A woman laughed in shock.

Someone said, “My God.”

Alessandro did not raise his voice.

He did not threaten.

That scared me more.

“Why?”

Vanessa wiped her face.

“Because you were pulling away.”

His eyes hardened.

“So you invented a child.”

“You wanted an heir,” she cried. “Everyone knows that. Your enemies know that. Your family knows that. I did what I had to do to secure us.”

“Us?”

Her expression changed again.

A flash of fury.

“Yes, us. I gave you access to families that still think you’re gutter blood with a palace. I stood beside you while they smiled at your money and hated your name. I made you acceptable.”

The room went deadly still.

Alessandro stepped closer.

“I see.”

Vanessa reached for him.

“I did it because I love you.”

“No,” he said. “You did it because you thought love was leverage.”

His words cut through her.

Then her eyes slid back to me.

“You,” she whispered. “You ruined everything.”

Emma whimpered.

I stepped in front of her.

Vanessa lunged.

Not at me.

At Emma.

Her hand flew toward my daughter’s face.

I moved before thinking.

I caught Vanessa’s wrist.

The ballroom gasped.

Her nails dug into my skin.

“You little rat,” Vanessa spat. “You should have kept your brat upstairs.”

Alessandro’s bodyguards seized her instantly.

She screamed as they pulled her back.

“Let go of me! Do you know who I am?”

Alessandro’s face had changed.

The cold calculation was gone.

In its place was something darker.

“You threatened a child in my house.”

Vanessa struggled.

“She destroyed my life!”

“She told the truth.”

Vanessa laughed wildly.

“Truth? Ask your precious maid about truth. Ask her who owned the site where her husband died.”

My breath stopped.

Alessandro’s eyes shifted to me.

“What did she say?”

Vanessa smiled through tears.

“Oh, she doesn’t know? Poor Sofia.”

My blood turned cold.

“What are you talking about?”

Vanessa tilted her head.

“Daniel Reyes. Construction worker. Fell from the Harbor Point scaffolding three years ago.”

The room blurred.

Daniel’s name in her mouth felt like a violation.

“How do you know my husband’s name?”

Vanessa’s smile widened.

“Because Alessandro’s company bought the waterfront project after the accident. But who do you think cleaned the records before the sale?”

Alessandro went still.

Marco looked at him sharply.

I could barely breathe.

Daniel’s death had been ruled accidental.

Faulty harness.

No criminal charges.

No answers.

I had begged for the investigation files.

They disappeared.

I looked at Alessandro.

“You knew?”

His eyes snapped to mine.

“No.”

Vanessa laughed again.

“You really don’t know anything, do you?”

Alessandro turned to Marco.

“Get the Harbor Point files. All of them.”

Marco nodded and disappeared.

The guests were no longer whispering about a fake pregnancy.

Now they were whispering about murder.

Vanessa realized too late what she had opened.

“Alessandro,” she said, fear breaking through her voice. “I didn’t mean—”

He cut her off.

“Take her to the east study.”

Her father shouted.

“You cannot detain my daughter.”

Alessandro looked at him.

“Watch me.”

The guards took Vanessa away.

She screamed my name as they dragged her through the ballroom.

“This is your fault!”

Emma began to cry.

I dropped to my knees and held her.

“I’m sorry, Mama,” she sobbed. “I didn’t mean to.”

I hugged her fever-hot body.

“No, baby. You told the truth.”

Alessandro stood over us, silent.

For the first time since I had known him, he looked at me not as staff, not as background, but as a woman whose life had just been shattered open in his ballroom.

“Sofia,” he said softly.

I looked up.

“If my name is in your husband’s death,” he said, “I will find out tonight.”

May you like

His voice lowered.

“And if anyone used my house to bury your grief, they will answer to me.”
