Surprise

Chapter 6 - The Father Who Came Back

I had imagined Caleb returning many times.

In my nightmares, mostly.

He would pound on a door.

He would shout my name in a parking lot.

He would appear at Lily’s school with flowers in one hand and anger in the other.

But I had never imagined him standing beside Vincent Moretti on a security camera, selling our daughter’s safety for money.

Dominic took my phone gently, but his face was anything except gentle.

“Is this his number?”

“No.”

“Would he hurt Lily?”

The question punched the air from me.

I wanted to say no.

A mother wants to believe she did not choose a man capable of hurting her child.

But I remembered Caleb drunk, screaming because Lily cried too loudly.

I remembered him throwing a bottle against the kitchen wall.

I remembered the night he grabbed my wrist and said, “You don’t leave me unless I let you.”

I looked at Lily.

Then I told the truth.

“I don’t know.”

Dominic nodded once.

That was enough.

Detective Reyes came back within minutes. She read the messages, saw the photo, and ordered a search for Caleb Ward.

“Ms. Carter,” she said, “did he have legal custody?”

“No. He never fought for it.”

“Did he pay support?”

I almost laughed.

“No.”

“Any contact?”

“One birthday card last year. No return address.”

Lily listened from the sofa, her face small and confused.

“Mommy,” she asked, “is Daddy coming?”

My chest tightened.

I knelt in front of her.

“Maybe.”

“Is he nice now?”

I could not lie to her.

“I don’t know, baby.”

She looked at Ethan.

“My daddy doesn’t know my favorite cereal.”

Ethan took her hand.

“My uncle doesn’t know I hate frosting roses.”

They sat there, two children comparing the small facts adults had failed to earn.

Dominic turned away.

Detective Reyes softened for half a second.

Then her phone rang.

She answered, listened, and looked at me.

“We found Caleb’s last address. Empty. Neighbors say he left two days ago with a black duffel bag.”

“Two days ago,” Dominic repeated.

Before the party.

Before the cake.

Before Lily stopped Ethan from eating.

Caleb had not been dragged in afterward.

He had been part of the plan.

My stomach rolled.

Marco entered with a laptop.

“We recovered audio from the device under the prep table.”

Dominic’s eyes went sharp.

“Play it.”

Detective Reyes lifted a hand.

“This is evidence.”

“It is evidence involving my son and her daughter,” Dominic said.

Reyes stared him down.

Then she nodded once.

Marco played the file.

Static filled the room.

Then voices.

Luca’s voice first.

“Camera loop is active.”

Another man replied.

Caleb.

My knees weakened.

“Where’s the girl?”

Luca said, “Near the kitchen. The maid went upstairs.”

Caleb laughed softly.

“Anna always runs when someone needs cleaning.”

I felt dirty hearing him say my name.

Then Vincent’s voice came through the speaker.

“Do it fast. Ethan takes the first bite, chaos starts, and the Carter girl becomes useful later.”

Dominic went pale with rage.

Luca asked, “What about the maid?”

Vincent replied, “If she gets in the way, Caleb can handle his own family.”

My ears rang.

His own family.

As if we belonged to him.

As if leaving had not saved us.

Detective Reyes stopped the recording.

“That is enough for warrants.”

Dominic’s voice was low.

“Play the rest.”

“There may be more—”

“Play it.”

She hesitated.

Then nodded.

Marco resumed.

Caleb spoke again.

“I want Lily after this. You promised.”

Vincent sounded bored.

“You get your money and your daughter. I get my brother broken.”

“And Anna?”

A pause.

Then Vincent said, “Do what you want.”

The room blurred.

Lily slid from the sofa and ran to me.

“Mommy, why are you crying?”

I did not know I was.

I wrapped my arms around her so tightly she squeaked.

“I’m sorry,” I whispered.

“For what?”

“For ever letting him near you.”

Dominic crossed the room.

“Anna.”

I shook my head.

“I married him. I brought her into that.”

“You left.”

“Not soon enough.”

His voice hardened.

“You left. That matters.”

The words hit me in a place I had kept locked for years.

Detective Reyes stood.

“We’re putting protective custody in place.”

Dominic looked at her.

“In my house.”

“No,” she said. “A safe location.”

“No.”

The room chilled.

Reyes did not blink.

“Mr. Moretti, your house has been compromised twice in twelve hours.”

Dominic’s jaw tightened.

She was right.

Everyone knew it.

I looked at Lily.

Then Ethan.

He was listening too closely.

If we left, Lily might be safer.

But Ethan would lose the only child who understood the terror of last night.

And Dominic would be alone with enemies in his walls.

That should not have mattered to me.

It did.

“I’ll go wherever Lily is safest,” I said.

Dominic looked at me, and something unreadable passed between us.

Reyes said, “Good.”

But before plans could be made, the estate alarm sounded.

Not loud like fire.

Low.

Heavy.

A lockdown tone.

Marco checked his radio.

His face changed.

“Front gate.”

Dominic stepped toward him.

“What?”

Marco looked at me.

“There’s a package.”

Detective Reyes snapped, “Nobody touches it.”

Marco swallowed.

“It has Anna’s name on it.”

The package sat beyond the front gate, small and brown, placed perfectly in the center of the driveway.

Bomb squad came.

Police sealed the entrance.

We watched through the study monitor as a robot rolled forward and opened it.

Inside was not a bomb.

It was worse.

A child’s pink shoe.

Lily’s shoe.

The one she had lost in the garden when Luca grabbed her.

Beside it was a note.

Dominic read it aloud, each word colder than the last.

I missed once. I won’t miss again.

Below that, in Caleb’s messy handwriting, were five more words.

Tell Lily Daddy is coming.

Lily did not understand the note.

But she understood my face.

She began to cry.

Ethan wrapped both arms around her.

Dominic turned to Detective Reyes.

“Safe house. Now.”

For once, he did not argue.

Within thirty minutes, we were in an armored SUV.

Dominic insisted on coming.

Reyes objected.

Dominic ignored her.

Ethan sat beside Lily, holding her rabbit because she said it needed guarding. I sat on Lily’s other side with my bandaged arm throbbing.

Dominic sat across from us.

The convoy rolled through the estate gates.

For the first time in six years, I left the Moretti property not as staff, but as someone being hunted.

We drove for twenty minutes.

Then thirty.

The city grew closer.

My breathing started to slow.

Then the lead SUV exploded.

The blast threw our vehicle sideways.

Lily screamed.

Ethan hit the floor.

Glass cracked.

Metal shrieked.

Our SUV slammed into a barrier and stopped.

For one second, everything was smoke and ringing.

Then Dominic looked at me through the haze.

“Anna, get down.”

May you like

Outside, men with guns stepped out of a white van.

And behind them, smiling like he had waited years for this moment, stood Caleb.
