Chapter 6 - The Man Behind the Betrayal

The next morning, I sat beside my father in Evelyn's office while a medical specialist reviewed my mother's records.
Every minute felt unbearable.
I wanted someone to tell me what had happened.
I wanted a simple answer.
But the specialist was careful.
"The documents show unexplained inconsistencies," Dr. Amelia Brooks explained. "Certain test results appear in one copy but not another."
I leaned forward.
"Does that mean someone hurt my mother?"
"Not necessarily. We need authentication, additional records, and expert review before drawing conclusions."
My father closed his eyes.
I knew he wanted certainty as badly as I did.
Dr. Brooks continued.
"What concerns me most is that your mother repeatedly reported receiving medication she didn't recognize."
My hands went cold.
"Was that documented?"
"Yes. In notes that appear to have been removed from the later chart."
Evelyn wrote something down.
I looked at my father.
He was staring at the wall.
"Dad?"
He slowly turned.
"I remember her saying something like that."
His voice cracked.
"She told me a nurse had given her a different tablet. I asked the hospital about it. They said she was confused from exhaustion."
He covered his face.
"I believed them."
I reached across the table.
"Dad, you couldn't have known."
He shook his head.
"I should have listened more carefully."
I squeezed his hand.
"We're listening now."
After the meeting, Evelyn informed us that investigators were reviewing the apartment break-in.
Security footage showed a man entering the building using an access credential associated with an old contractor account.
He had worn a cap.
His face was partially hidden.
But his vehicle had been identified.
It belonged to a rental company.
The reservation had been made under a false name.
"And the payment?" I asked.
Evelyn looked at me.
"A card linked to Carter Advisory."
Daniel's company.
I stood so quickly my chair scraped against the floor.
"That's enough. I'm calling him."
My father raised one hand.
"Nick."
"He broke into my home!"
"Then let the police handle it."
I stared at him.
"He betrayed me. He slept with Vanessa. He tried to access my mother's trust. And now he may have taken the only thing she left me."
"I know."
My father's voice was firm.
"But anger won't make him tell the truth."
I wanted to argue.
Then I remembered him standing in the ballroom while Diane insulted him.
He had remained calm.
Not because he was weak.
Because he understood that losing control often gave cruel people exactly what they wanted.
I sat down.
"Then what do we do?"
Evelyn answered.
"We preserve evidence, cooperate with investigators, and prevent further financial damage."
She paused.
"And we investigate the connection between Daniel and the Whitmore family."
That investigation moved faster than I expected.
Within two days, our forensic accountants uncovered a network of suspicious consulting contracts.
Whitmore Enterprises had paid Carter Advisory millions over three years.
Much of the money had then moved through additional companies.
Some payments appeared tied to legitimate services.
Others had no clear business purpose.
At the same time, Bennett Global's compliance team discovered that Daniel had repeatedly sought confidential information about my mother's trust.
He had used my friendship as an introduction.
I remembered all the lunches.
The casual questions.
The times he asked whether my father still managed investments.
I felt like an idiot.
"He studied me," I said.
My father looked up.
"What?"
"Daniel didn't just become my friend. He studied my life."
Evelyn nodded.
"That is one possibility."
I stared at the wall.
"Fifteen years."
My father sat beside me.
"Nick, being deceived doesn't mean you were foolish to trust someone."
I looked at him.
"It feels that way."
He squeezed my shoulder.
"I know."
That evening, an unexpected visitor arrived at my father's house.
Vanessa.
She stood beyond the security gate wearing a plain coat and carrying a handbag.
Marcus contacted us.
"She says she has something for Nicholas."
I stared at the security monitor.
My first instinct was to send her away.
Then I noticed her expression.
She looked terrified.
Not angry.
Not manipulative.
Terrified.
I asked Marcus to bring her to the guest sitting room.
My father remained nearby.
When Vanessa entered, she stopped several feet from me.
"Thank you for seeing me."
I folded my arms.
"What do you want?"
She opened her handbag.
Then carefully removed a small blue notebook.
I stopped breathing.
My mother's journal.
"Where did you get that?"
"Daniel."
I stepped forward.
She flinched.
I stopped immediately.
"Did you steal it?"
"No. I swear."
"Then explain."
She placed the notebook on the table.
"Daniel came to my mother's house yesterday. They argued. He left this behind when he stormed out."
I stared at the worn leather cover.
There was a faded mark near the bottom.
A tiny white flower.
I remembered tracing that flower with my finger when I was a child.
My mother had drawn it herself.
I picked up the journal.
For several seconds, I couldn't speak.
Vanessa wiped her cheeks.
"I know you hate me."
I looked at her.
"I don't hate you."
She seemed surprised.
"But I don't trust you."
She nodded.
"I know."
"Why bring this back?"
Her lips trembled.
"Because Daniel lied to everyone. Including me."
I opened the notebook.
Most pages were familiar.
My mother's handwriting.
Her notes about birthdays.
Little stories about our family.
Then, near the back, I found several pages I had never read.
They were filled with dates.
Account numbers.
Initials.
And one repeated name.
Richard Carter.
My father moved beside me.
I turned another page.
A paragraph had been underlined twice.
I cannot prove everything yet, but I believe Richard and Eleanor are moving company funds through Whitmore accounts.
I frowned.
"Eleanor?"
My father went completely still.
I looked at him.
"Who is Eleanor?"
He swallowed.
"Eleanor Whitmore."
Vanessa made a small sound.
I turned toward her.
"Who?"
She stared at the journal.
"My grandmother."
The room seemed to contract.
Diane's mother.
Vanessa's grandmother.
Had been connected to Richard Carter.
My father sank into a chair.
"I knew Eleanor was involved in property investments. I never knew she had ties to Richard's transfers."
I continued reading.
The next page contained a personal note.
Arthur trusts people too easily. I need to finish this before Richard convinces him nothing is wrong.
My eyes blurred.
I could almost hear my mother's voice.
Determined.
Worried.
Trying to protect our family.
Then I reached the final written page.
The handwriting was uneven.
As though her hand had been shaking.
If anything happens to me, Arthur must know the records are not at the office. I placed the originals where Nicholas will always be protected.
I stared at those words.
"Where Nicholas will always be protected?"
My father leaned closer.
There was only one more sentence.
The answer is beneath the tree where we promised our son a lifetime of summers.
I looked at my father.
His face changed immediately.
"The oak tree."
"What oak tree?"
He stood.
"At our old house."
The house where I grew up.
The backyard where my mother used to sit with me.
The enormous oak near the wooden swing.
I remembered her pushing me while I laughed.
I remembered my father taking photographs.
I remembered the day they planted flowers beneath its branches.
"Dad?"
He was already reaching for his coat.
"We need to go."
Vanessa stood.
"Nick, wait."
I turned.
She was trembling.
"There's something else."
"What?"
She looked toward the window.
"Daniel knows about the tree."
My heart started pounding.
"How?"
"He read the journal before I took it."
I looked at my father.
Then at Marcus standing near the doorway.
"Call the police," I said.
My father nodded.
But before Marcus could move, his earpiece crackled.
He listened.
Then looked at us sharply.
"Chairman, security at the old Bennett property has reported an intrusion."
My father was already walking.
"Is anyone there?"
Marcus answered.
"Yes, sir."
"Who?"
Marcus looked directly at me.
"Daniel Carter."
I felt every muscle in my body tighten.
"And he's not alone."
I stepped forward.
"Who is with him?"
Marcus hesitated.
May you like
Then answered.
"Diane Whitmore."
