Chapter 6

The story reached social media the next morning.
Of course it did.
A thirty-second phone video showed Derrick blocking me at the entrance.
Vanessa laughing.
Me standing in the blue dress.
Then Marcus walking outside.
Unfortunately, the video ended before he revealed I owned the mansion.
The caption read:
WOMAN CAUSES SCENE AT PRIVATE MANSION PARTY.
By breakfast, it had half a million views.
By lunch, more than two million.
Comments were brutal.
"She should've just left."
"Why argue with security?"
"Entitled."
"Embarrassing."
I stared at the screen until Marcus took my phone.
"Stop reading."
"I need to know what's happening."
"You know what's happening."
"People think I'm crazy."
"People don't know the whole story."
"They don't care."
He sat across from me.
"Then show them."
I looked at him.
That sounded simple.
It wasn't.
My attorney advised silence while the investigation continued.
My public-relations team wanted a formal statement.
Cynthia wanted to release the full security video.
Detective Carter told me not to disclose evidence that might affect the case.
Meanwhile, Vanessa posted.
A carefully written statement.
She didn't name me.
She didn't need to.
"Last night's charity event experienced an unfortunate security misunderstanding involving an individual who became aggressive when asked to verify her invitation."
Aggressive.
I felt sick.
Then another sentence.
"As organizers, our priority remains guest safety."
Guest safety.
She had humiliated me.
Forged my signature.
Taken money.
And now she was presenting herself as the responsible one.
Marcus read the post.
"She's following the plan."
Exactly.
Public reputation strategy.
I wanted to respond immediately.
Instead, I called Detective Carter.
"Can I release the part where Marcus identifies me as the owner?"
She considered it.
"Yes."
"Can I mention the investigation?"
"Only that potential financial irregularities were reported to authorities."
"Nothing else?"
"Not yet."
So we released sixty seconds of security footage.
The new video showed everything.
Vanessa mocking me.
Derrick blocking me.
Marcus stepping outside.
Then:
"Why are you stopping the woman who owns this property?"
The internet changed direction so fast it almost made me dizzy.
Suddenly, headlines appeared.
MANSION OWNER BLOCKED FROM HER OWN PARTY.
LUXURY EVENT ORGANIZER ACCUSED OF REMOVING PROPERTY OWNER FROM GUEST LIST.
The same people who had mocked me began mocking Vanessa.
I didn't enjoy it.
That surprised me.
I thought vindication would feel powerful.
Instead, I felt tired.
Because I knew something millions of viewers didn't.
The humiliation was the smallest part.
Detective Carter called that afternoon.
Trevor had turned himself in.
He was frightened.
His interrupted phone call had not been an attack.
Someone had tried to enter the hotel room where he was hiding.
He escaped through a connecting room.
Police identified the person.
A private investigator hired by Leon.
That was bad.
But Trevor brought evidence.
Lots of it.
Emails.
Contracts.
Recorded calls.
Bank statements.
His cooperation changed everything.
He admitted joining the scheme eighteen months earlier.
Leon approached him first.
Vanessa joined six months later.
Malcolm was recruited afterward.
"What was the original plan?" I asked.
Detective Carter looked at Trevor through the interview-room glass.
"Take control of your management companies gradually."
"Without me noticing?"
"Yes."
"How?"
"Trevor would create legitimate-looking documents."
"Malcolm would help push them through internal review."
"Vanessa would create external relationships and move money."
"And Leon?"
"He funded it."
I folded my arms.
"Why the party?"
"Vanessa accelerated the plan."
"Why?"
"She needed cash."
That made sense.
But Detective Carter continued.
"She also had a personal motive."
I looked at her.
"What?"
"She believed you were going to remove her from the social circle around the foundation."
I frowned.
"I barely thought about her."
"She didn't know that."
Apparently, Vanessa had convinced herself that I looked down on her.
That I purposely excluded her from business events.
That I withheld introductions.
In reality, I simply didn't mix every friend with every business relationship.
But resentment doesn't need facts.
It only needs a story.
Trevor also revealed something worse.
The property transfers were not the final stage.
Once VCR Holdings controlled management, they planned to create artificial debt against the properties.
Then force refinancing.
Millions could have been pulled out before I understood what happened.
"How much?"
I asked.
Detective Carter looked grim.
"Potentially eight to twelve million."
I sat back.
That number made the scheme real in a new way.
Marcus sat beside me.
"Could they have succeeded?"
She nodded.
"If the documents had gone unchallenged for long enough."
I thought about arriving at the party.
Being blocked.
Staying.
If I had turned around from embarrassment, Vanessa might have bought herself several more days.
Monday would have come.
The transfers would have activated.
Everything might have changed.
The humiliation that nearly broke me had actually exposed them.
Later that evening, I returned to the mansion alone.
The terrace was quiet.
A few empty glasses remained from the canceled party.
I stood where Derrick had blocked me.
I remembered Vanessa's words.
This party isn't for people like you.
I finally understood why that sentence had hurt.
For years, I had entered wealthy spaces where people quietly wondered how I got there.
I had learned to ignore certain looks.
Certain questions.
Certain assumptions.
Vanessa knew that.
She had chosen the exact wound she thought would make me retreat.
Instead, I stayed.
The front door opened.
Marcus stepped outside.
"You disappeared."
"I needed a minute."
He came beside me.
"Thinking?"
"Too much."
He smiled.
I looked at the mansion.
"I almost left."
"But you didn't."
"I wanted to."
"But you didn't."
I nodded.
Then my phone rang.
My attorney.
"Nia, we found another document."
My stomach tightened.
"What now?"
"A will."
I froze.
"Whose?"
"Your father's."
I stared into the dark garden.
She continued.
"Leon filed a petition this afternoon claiming your father illegally transferred the original family property to you."
I closed my eyes.

Even facing criminal investigation, my uncle wasn't finished.
He was now trying to attack the foundation of everything I owned.
