Chapter 3

What the Car Remembered
For several seconds, neither of us moved.
I stared at Vanessa.
She stared back.
Then she laughed nervously.
"What?"
I swallowed.
"What hidden recording?"
She brushed a strand of hair behind her ear.
"I just meant the footage from the shoot."
"No, you didn't."
Her smile disappeared.
"Ethan, you're exhausted. You're turning everything into a conspiracy."
I had heard those words before.
Whenever I questioned an unexplained expense, Vanessa said I was overreacting.
Whenever I noticed her whispering on the phone, she accused me of being jealous.
Whenever I asked about Ryan's sudden interest in the patents, she said I should trust my family.
Now I wondered whether those conversations had been carefully designed to keep me from looking too closely.
I picked up my keys.
"Where are you going?" she asked.
"Back to the workshop."
"It's almost midnight."
"Then I won't have much traffic."
She followed me toward the door.
"Ethan, don't do anything stupid."
I stopped.
"What would be stupid?"
Her eyes shifted.
"Accusing people without evidence."
I opened the door.
"Then it's a good thing I'm looking for evidence."
I drove through Atlanta with my hands gripping the steering wheel.
The streets were nearly empty.
Rain had begun falling against my windshield.
By the time I reached Walker Performance Engineering, the parking lot was dark except for the security lights.
Marcus waited beside the entrance.
He opened the door before I reached it.
"Come inside."
His voice sounded strained.
We walked through the silent workshop.
The Raven X1 stood beneath bright overhead lights.
Its matte-black body looked almost unreal in the empty building.
The enormous rear wing cast a long shadow across the polished floor.
I stopped beside it.
"What did you find?"
Marcus led me to the engineering office.
He opened a laptop.
"I was reviewing the telemetry from today's test."
I frowned.
"Why?"
"Because Ryan requested access to the car's onboard data yesterday."
My stomach tightened.
"He did?"
Marcus nodded.
"He said the investors wanted performance figures."
"Did you give him access?"
"Only to the standard reports."
He turned the screen toward me.
"The Raven X1 uses a secure engineering data logger. It records system status, diagnostic events, and certain interactions during testing."
I leaned closer.
Marcus opened an activity report.
Several entries appeared from the previous evening.
Someone had connected an unauthorized device to the engineering network.
The connection originated from a workstation assigned to Ryan's department.
"What did they access?" I asked.
"Calibration files. Design references. And the prototype's security diagnostic records."
I stared at the screen.
"Can we identify who did it?"
"Not yet. But there's more."
He opened a separate folder.
It contained a preserved recording from a fixed security camera inside the workshop.
Marcus explained that the backup system had captured activity after the normal staff had gone home.
The footage showed Ryan entering the engineering office.
He was carrying a laptop.
Several minutes later, Vanessa appeared.
My chest tightened.
My wife and my brother.
Together.
Inside the engineering facility after midnight.
I watched Ryan connect his computer to the workstation.
Vanessa stood beside him, looking toward the door.
Then she handed him something.
A small security token.
I recognized it immediately.
It was one of the devices used to authenticate sensitive engineering transfers.
It belonged to my office.
I had searched for it two days earlier.
Vanessa had told me I probably misplaced it.
My hands began shaking.
Marcus paused the recording.
"Ethan?"
I couldn't speak.
He waited.
I finally whispered, "Play it."
The footage continued.
Ryan worked at the computer for several minutes.
Vanessa checked her phone repeatedly.
Then she leaned toward him.
The camera didn't record clear audio from that distance.
But their actions were unmistakable.
They were copying files.
I watched them remove the device, close the workstation, and leave.
Marcus stopped the footage.
I stared at the frozen image.
My brother had used my access credentials.
My wife had helped him.
And the electronic transfer of the Raven X1 design rights had occurred the next morning.
I felt physically sick.
"How long have you known?" I asked Marcus.
"I found it tonight."
"Did anyone else see it?"
"No."
I sank into a chair.
For years, Vanessa had complained that I worked too much.
She said she wanted me home.
She wanted vacations.
She wanted expensive dinners and a larger house.
I kept promising things would improve after the Raven X1 launch.
But lately, she had stopped arguing.
Instead, she became unusually affectionate whenever I discussed the company's future value.
I remembered her asking whether the car could make us billionaires.
I remembered Ryan telling me we should consider selling licensing rights to a foreign investor.
And I remembered refusing.
My father had wanted Walker Performance Engineering to remain independent.
I had promised to honor that wish.
Now I understood why Ryan and Vanessa had become so frustrated.
They couldn't get me to sell.
So they had tried to sell without me.
Marcus sat across from me.
"Your father knew Ryan struggled with jealousy."
I looked up.
"You said he warned you."
Marcus nodded.
"About a year before he died, James asked me to make sure the engineering archives were protected."
"From Ryan?"
"He didn't name him directly."
I swallowed.
"What did he say?"
Marcus looked toward the car.
"He said someone who wants the reward without respecting the work will eventually become dangerous."
I closed my eyes.
My father had seen something I refused to acknowledge.
Marcus continued.
"He also left a sealed package with the company's original attorney."
I looked at him sharply.
"What package?"
"He told me it should only be opened if someone challenged ownership of the Raven program."
I leaned forward.
"Where is it?"
"Rebecca should know."
I immediately called her.
Despite the hour, she answered.
When I explained what Marcus had found, her voice became serious.
"Preserve everything. Do not alter the original files."
Then I asked about the package.
She went silent.
"Ethan, I wondered when we'd have this conversation."
My heart pounded.
"You knew?"
"I knew your father deposited sealed instructions with the firm. I haven't reviewed them because the conditions for opening them hadn't arisen."
"Can we open them now?"
"I believe so, but we need to follow the procedure he specified."
I looked at the Raven X1 through the office window.
It stood beneath the lights like a monument to everything my father believed.
Rebecca continued.
"Come to my office tomorrow morning. Bring Marcus."
I agreed.
Then she added something unexpected.
"Ethan, there's another detail you need to know."
"What?"
"Blackstone Automotive Holdings was not formed recently."
I frowned.
"Then when?"
"Almost two years ago."
I felt a chill.
Two years.
That meant the plan might have begun while my father was still alive.
Rebecca's voice lowered.
"And the earliest corporate filing identifies Ryan Walker as one of the people involved."
I stared at the screen.
My brother had not made a desperate mistake last week.
He had been preparing for this betrayal for years.
Then Marcus received a message on his phone.
He read it and went pale.
"What happened?" I asked.
He looked toward the workshop.
"Someone just attempted to remotely access the Raven X1's control system."
I stood so quickly that my chair fell backward.
"From where?"
Marcus swallowed.
"The authentication request came from the same external network used during the unauthorized file transfer."
I looked at the car.
May you like
The machine my father had spent his final years building was sitting only a few yards away.
And somewhere outside the workshop, someone was still trying to control it.
