Surprise

Chapter 7

I had never seen Marcus look so frightened.

He stood beside Daniel's hospital bed while nurses hurried into the room.

The heart monitor beeped rapidly.

A doctor asked us to step outside.

Marcus didn't move.

"Sir, we need space."

I grabbed his hand.

"Marcus."

He looked at me.

His face was pale.

"Claire, I just found him."

My heart broke.

"I know."

He looked back at Daniel.

"I can't lose him now."

I pulled him gently toward the door.

The medical team moved around the bed.

Nia stood in the hallway with one hand pressed against her stomach.

She was crying.

I wrapped my arm around her.

For several minutes, nobody spoke.

Then Marcus leaned against the wall.

He covered his face.

"Thirty-eight years."

His voice cracked.

"I waited thirty-eight years."

I moved beside him.

"He knows you love him."

Marcus shook his head.

"That's not enough."

I touched his arm.

"It's something."

He looked at me.

His eyes were filled with tears.

I held him.

And for the first time, I understood just how deeply this secret had wounded him.

It wasn't only about Daniel.

It was about every birthday Marcus had spent waiting for a father who never came.

Every school event.

Every graduation.

Every moment he'd wondered why he wasn't enough.

Now he knew his father had wanted him.

But he was terrified their time together would end before it truly began.

After nearly forty minutes, the doctor came out.

Daniel had experienced a serious cardiac episode.

But he was stable.

For now.

Nia began crying with relief.

Marcus closed his eyes.

"Thank God."

The doctor explained that Daniel needed rest and close monitoring.

We couldn't speak with him again immediately.

Marcus nodded.

"I understand."

But I could see how difficult it was for him to leave.

That evening, we returned home.

Evelyn was waiting in the living room.

She sat in her wheelchair beside the fireplace.

Caleb and Maya were upstairs with Renee.

Marcus stopped when he saw his mother.

For several seconds, neither spoke.

Then Evelyn whispered, "How is Daniel?"

Marcus stared at her.

"He's alive."

She closed her eyes.

"Thank God."

Marcus stepped closer.

"Mom, why didn't you tell me about Lake Mercer?"

Evelyn looked down.

"I was ashamed."

"Of what?"

"Of being afraid."

Marcus shook his head.

"You were afraid of Grandpa."

She nodded.

"I know that now."

He sat across from her.

"Mom, Anthony knew everything."

Evelyn's face tightened.

"What?"

"He knew Daniel was my father. He knew Grandpa threatened him."

She closed her eyes.

"I know."

Marcus leaned forward.

"And Daniel says Anthony recorded the truth."

Evelyn looked up sharply.

"The tape?"

My stomach tightened.

Marcus stared at her.

"You know about it?"

She swallowed.

"I knew Daniel brought a recorder."

Marcus stood.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

Evelyn began crying.

"I thought it was gone."

He stared.

"Mom, how much more are you hiding?"

Her face crumpled.

I stepped closer.

"Evelyn, please."

She looked at us.

Then whispered, "Anthony has been threatening me for years."

My blood ran cold.

"What?"

She nodded.

"He says he'll tell everyone I helped Walter destroy Daniel's life."

Marcus stared.

"But you did stay silent."

Evelyn lowered her head.

"I know."

He looked away.

She continued.

"Anthony demanded money."

My stomach tightened.

"How much?"

Evelyn hesitated.

"More than two hundred thousand dollars over the years."

Marcus stared at her.

"Mom!"

She began sobbing.

"I was afraid he'd expose everything."

I shook my head.

"Evelyn, paying him only made it worse."

"I know."

Marcus looked toward the floor.

For a moment, I thought he might leave.

Instead, he took a slow breath.

"Then we're ending it."

Evelyn looked up.

"What?"

He turned toward me.

"Claire, call Renee."

I frowned.

"Why?"

"Ask her to keep the kids overnight."

My stomach tightened.

"Marcus, what are you planning?"

He looked at his mother.

"I'm going to confront Anthony."

I immediately shook my head.

"No."

He stared.

"Claire—"

"No."

I stepped closer.

"You're not walking into a confrontation with someone who's been blackmailing your mother for years."

Marcus clenched his jaw.

"We can't keep hiding."

"I agree."

I took his hand.

"But we're not doing this recklessly."

He looked away.

I continued.

"We have evidence. We have witnesses. We have a living father who can explain what happened."

Marcus stared at me.

"Then what do you suggest?"

"We talk to an attorney."

Evelyn nodded slowly.

"Claire's right."

Marcus let out a bitter laugh.

"Now you want to tell the truth?"

Evelyn flinched.

I placed my hand on his arm.

"Marcus."

He closed his eyes.

Then nodded.

"Fine."

The next morning, we met with attorney Olivia Grant.

She was a family friend who specialized in civil litigation and complex fraud cases.

We explained everything.

The DNA report.

The false paternity story.

Lake Mercer.

Anthony's payments.

Daniel's allegations.

Olivia listened carefully.

Then asked one question.

"Do you have evidence of the blackmail?"

Evelyn reached into her handbag.

She removed a small folder.

I stared at her.

"What is that?"

"Receipts."

Marcus leaned forward.

"Receipts?"

Evelyn nodded.

"Bank transfers. Cash withdrawal records. Messages."

I felt my stomach twist.

Olivia examined them.

Her expression changed.

"These are important."

Marcus looked at his mother.

"You kept proof?"

Evelyn nodded.

"I was afraid Anthony would demand more."

Olivia carefully arranged the papers.

Then she looked at us.

"We need to preserve these records and report the threats through the proper channels."

I nodded.

Marcus looked restless.

"How long will that take?"

Olivia gave him a calm look.

"Long enough to do it correctly."

He exhaled.

"Okay."

Then Olivia opened one of the bank statements.

She frowned.

"Wait."

I leaned forward.

"What?"

She pointed toward a transfer.

"This payment wasn't made to Anthony directly."

Marcus stared.

"Then who received it?"

Olivia read the account name.

"Johnson Family Holdings."

My stomach tightened.

That was the business Walter had founded decades earlier.

Marcus inherited a small interest after his grandfather's death.

I looked at Evelyn.

Her face drained.

Olivia continued.

"According to this statement, some of the payments were routed through an account controlled by a current company officer."

Marcus leaned closer.

"Who?"

Olivia checked the document.

Then looked up.

"Marcus, it's your signature."

My husband stared at her.

"What?"

I felt the room tilt.

Marcus shook his head.

"I never authorized those transfers."

Olivia's expression became serious.

May you like

"Then someone may have used your identity."

And suddenly, the family secret had become something far more dangerous than an old lie.
