Chapter 6: The Man From My Past
I had spent ten years trying to forget Daniel.
Not because he was dangerous.
Not because he had threatened me.
Because remembering him meant remembering the person I used to be.
Before the house.
Before the children.
Before Vanessa.
Before I convinced myself that the past could stay buried if I never looked back.
But now my daughter was gone.
And the man standing beside her in that school camera footage was the one person who knew the part of my life I had never told anyone.
Not even Vanessa.
At least, that was what I believed.
I stared at the screen.
The image was frozen.
Nia.
Her pink jacket.
Her small backpack.
Daniel’s hand extended toward her.
Like he was offering help.
Like he wasn’t the reason my entire body had gone cold.
Ethan looked at me.
“Marcus.””
I didn’t respond.
“Who is he?””
I finally looked away from the screen.
“Someone I used to know.””
“That’s not an answer.””
I knew he was right.
But saying the truth out loud felt like opening a door I had kept locked for a decade.
“Daniel Reeves.””
Ethan waited.
“What happened between you two?””
I swallowed.
“We were partners.””
“In business?””
“Yes.””
“And?””
I looked back at the monitor.
“And I ruined his life.””
The words came out quietly.
Mrs. Reynolds looked between us.
“Mr. Carter, we need to focus on finding Nia.””
She was right.
The past could wait.
My daughter couldn’t.
I turned to the security staff member.
“Can you track where he went?””
The man shook his head.
“Unfortunately, the camera only covers the gate.””
“Then check every camera.””
“We’re doing that now.””
“Please.””
The desperation in my voice surprised me.
I had negotiated million-dollar deals.
I had handled business crises.
I had walked into rooms full of powerful people and never shown fear.
But none of that mattered.
Because my nine-year-old daughter was somewhere with someone from my past.
And I had no idea what he wanted.
My phone rang.
Unknown number.
Everyone looked at me.
I answered immediately.
“Hello?””
For several seconds, there was only silence.
Then a familiar voice spoke.
“Marcus.””
My entire body went still.
Daniel.
I closed my eyes.
“Where is my daughter?””
A pause.
Then:
“She’s safe.””
I gripped the phone tighter.
“If you hurt her—”
“I didn’t take her to hurt her.””
“Then why did you take her?””
Another silence.
Then Daniel said:
“Because you never listened.””
My jaw tightened.
“You don’t get to involve my child in whatever problem you have with me.””
“You’re right.””
His voice sounded tired.
“And that’s why I made sure she wasn’t afraid.””
I looked at Ethan.
He was watching me carefully.
“Put Nia on the phone.””
“I can’t.””
“Why?””
“Because she’s asleep.””
My heart stopped.
“Asleep where?””
Daniel didn’t answer.
“Daniel.””
“I need you to hear me, Marcus.””
My voice became sharper.
“No. You need to tell me where my daughter is.””
“Not until you understand why she came with me.””
I felt anger rising.
“She’s nine years old. She doesn’t make decisions like this.””
“She did.””
“No.””
“She did.””
His voice cracked slightly.
“She called me.””
The room went silent.
I felt confused.
“What?””
“She found my number.””
“That’s impossible.””
“Is it?””
I couldn’t answer.
Because suddenly, memories started connecting.
The letter.
The fear.
The school conversation.
The way Nia had said she didn’t want to ruin my marriage.
Daniel continued.
“She asked me for help.””
My chest tightened.
“Why would she ask you?””
A long pause.
Then he said:
“Because Vanessa told her something.””
My blood ran cold.
“What?””
“She told Nia that if she ever told you the truth, she would lose her father.””
I looked at Ethan.
He looked away.
Because he knew.
He knew more than he had admitted.
“What truth?””
Daniel was silent.
Then he said:
“The same truth you buried ten years ago.””
The words hit me.
My hands started shaking.
“You leave my daughter out of this.””
“I tried.””
His voice became emotional.
“I tried for years.””
“Then why are you here now?””
“Because Vanessa crossed a line.””
I looked toward Ethan.
“What line?””
Daniel answered:
“She used your daughter to protect a lie.””
I felt sick.
“Where is Nia?””
“I’ll tell you.””
A pause.
“But you come alone.””
“No.””
“Marcus.””
His voice became serious.
“If you bring anyone else, I leave.””
I looked at Ethan.
“No.””
Daniel continued.
“I know you don’t trust me.””
“You’re right.””
“But you need to decide something.””
“What?””
“Do you want the truth?””
The line went quiet.
Then he said:
“Or do you want the version of your family you created because it was easier to believe?””
The call ended.
I stood there holding the phone.
Nobody spoke.
Finally, Ethan said:
“You’re not going alone.””
I looked at him.
“Didn’t you hear him?””
“I heard him.””
“He knows something.””
“Yes.””
“And he wants me alone.””
Ethan shook his head.
“That’s exactly why I’m not letting you go alone.””
I looked at him.
“You’re the reason this happened.””
His expression changed.
“I know.””
The honesty stopped me.
“I know I should have told you sooner.””
He looked exhausted.
“But Marcus, Daniel isn’t lying about one thing.””
“What?””
“You don’t know everything about Vanessa.””
I wanted to argue.
But I couldn’t.
Because that was the entire problem.
I didn’t know anything anymore.
I drove to the location Daniel sent me.
An old warehouse near the edge of town.
A place that had been abandoned for years.
Ethan followed in another car.
I told him not to.
He ignored me.
Some things about brothers never changed.
When I arrived, the building looked exactly how I remembered it.
Broken windows.
Rusting doors.
A place where people left things they didn’t want anymore.
I stepped inside.
“Daniel?””
My voice echoed.
A few seconds later, he appeared.
Older.
Different.
But still recognizable.
His hair had more gray.
His face had more lines.
But his eyes were the same.
The same eyes that once looked at me like a brother.
And now looked at me like someone who had waited years for this moment.
“Nia?””
He stepped aside.
“She’s upstairs.””
I moved immediately.
Then stopped.
“Before I see her…”
Daniel looked at me.
“Tell me why.””
He sighed.
“Because you deserve to know.””
I waited.
“Ten years ago, when you and I started Carter-Reeves Development, we had everything.””
I nodded slowly.
“We were successful.””
“We were brothers.””
The word hurt.
Then he continued.
“Until Vanessa came into your life.””
I frowned.
“Don’t blame her for everything.””
“I’m not.””
His voice was calm.
“I’m blaming both of you.””
I looked away.
“What happened?””
Daniel walked toward an old table.
“You remember the investment deal?””
My stomach tightened.
“Yes.””
“The one that failed.””
“Yes.””
He looked at me.
“You told everyone I made the mistake.””
I froze.
“I didn’t.””
“You did.””
“No.””
“You stood in front of the board and said the numbers were my responsibility.””
I remembered.
The meeting.
The pressure.
The panic.
But I also remembered Vanessa sitting beside me afterward.
Telling me I had to protect myself.
“You lost everything because of that.””
Daniel nodded.
“My company.””
His voice became quieter.
“My reputation.””
He looked at me.
“And my family.””
I swallowed.
“I didn’t know.””
“That’s the point.””
He laughed bitterly.
“You never know anything, Marcus.””
The words hit harder than they should have.
Because they sounded exactly like what I had been discovering.
Daniel continued.
“After everything happened, I found out something.””
“What?””
“That the failure wasn’t my mistake.””
My face changed.
“What?””
He pulled out a folder.
“I found the missing financial records.””
He opened it.
Then showed me.
My hands went cold.
Because the signature at the bottom belonged to someone I knew.
Someone who had been beside me.
Someone who had been helping me rebuild.
Vanessa.
I stared.
“No.””
Daniel watched my reaction.
“Yes.””
“She wouldn’t.””
“She did.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
Because even after everything, part of me still wanted to defend her.
That was the worst part.
Daniel stepped closer.
“She manipulated the deal.””
“Why?””
“Because she knew if you lost your partnership, you would become dependent on her.””
My stomach turned.
“That’s insane.””
“Is it?””
He pointed toward the documents.
“She didn’t want to marry a man who had a partner.””
Silence.
“She wanted a man who had nowhere else to go.””
I looked down.
The paper blurred.
Because suddenly, memories changed.
The way Vanessa always encouraged me to cut ties.
The way she said Daniel was holding me back.
The way she told me I needed to choose my future.
I thought she was supporting me.
Maybe she was removing obstacles.
Then Daniel said:
“But that’s not the worst part.””
I looked up.
“What could possibly be worse?””
He looked toward the stairs.
“Your daughter knows.””
My heart stopped.
“What?””
“Before Nia came here, she told me something.””
“What?””
Daniel’s face became serious.
“She found something in Vanessa’s room.””
My voice became quiet.
“What did she find?””
Daniel looked at me.
“A file.””
“What file?””
He took a breath.
“The file Vanessa created about you.””
My blood went cold.
“What was in it?””
Daniel answered:
“Everything she planned from the beginning.””
I heard footsteps above us.
Small footsteps.
I looked up.
“Nia?””
A small voice answered.
“Dad?””
I ran upstairs.
And there she was.
My daughter.
Safe.
Tired.
Her eyes filled with tears the moment she saw me.
I dropped to my knees and hugged her.
“I’m sorry.””
She cried into my shoulder.
“I thought you would hate me.””
I held her tighter.
“Never.””
Behind me, Daniel stood silently.
Then Nia whispered something that made my entire body freeze.
“Dad…”
I pulled back.
“What?””
She wiped her eyes.
“Mom didn’t just make me eat alone.””
My heart stopped.
“What do you mean?””
She looked terrified.
Then she reached into her backpack.
And pulled out a small envelope.
“I found this hidden in her drawer.””
I took it.
On the front were three words.
My name.
May you like
And beneath it:
*“The truth about Marcus.””*
