Chapter 1

The plate hit the side of my head before I even realized my husband had picked it up.
A sharp crack exploded beside my ear.
For one terrible second, everything went white.
Then I heard porcelain breaking against the marble floor.
My knees buckled.
I stumbled backward into a dining chair, grabbing the edge of our polished table to keep myself from falling.
"Give my mother the apartment!" Marcus roared.
I stared at him.
My husband.
The man who had promised to protect me.
The man who had kissed my forehead that morning and told me he loved me.
He was standing over me with his fists clenched, breathing hard, looking as though he might strike me again.
And his mother was smiling.
"Marcus, sweetheart," Evelyn said calmly. "Don't ruin another expensive plate."
I pressed my trembling fingers against my cheek.
The pain was spreading toward my ear.
But something hurt worse.
Neither of them had asked whether I was okay.
"That apartment belonged to my grandmother," I whispered. "She left it to me."
Evelyn adjusted the diamond necklace resting against her gray gown.
"And now it should belong to this family."
"It already belongs to this family. I'm your son's wife."
Her smile disappeared.
"Don't be clever with me, Nia."
Marcus slammed both hands against the table.
"Sign the transfer papers tonight!"
I looked at the documents beside my untouched dinner.
They had been waiting there when I arrived.
A property transfer agreement.
My name printed neatly beneath a blank signature line.
The apartment was worth almost two million dollars.
But that wasn't why I refused to surrender it.
My grandmother had purchased that apartment after spending forty years working as a nurse.
She had raised my mother there.
After my mother died, Grandma had turned it into the one place where I could still feel close to her.
Before she passed away, she made me promise something.
"Never give away the place where your heart feels safe."
I had kept that promise.
Until tonight, I thought my marriage was another safe place.
I was wrong.
"You have five minutes," Marcus growled.
Evelyn stepped closer.
"Sign it over tonight, Nia. We won't ask again."
I looked between them.
Then I laughed.
It wasn't a happy laugh.
It was the sound of something inside me finally breaking.
"You really think I'm going to hand you everything because you hit me?"
Marcus leaned forward.
"Don't test me."
I slowly reached for my handbag.
His eyes narrowed.
"What are you doing?"
I opened the bag and removed a tiny black USB drive.
Evelyn stopped smiling.
Marcus stared at the object in my hand.
"What is that?"
I held it between two fingers.
"The reason I didn't sign your papers."
Evelyn recovered first.
"Some ridiculous little flash drive?"
I looked directly into her eyes.
"You should've never threatened me."
The room went silent.
Three weeks earlier, I had discovered an unfamiliar document on our home printer.
It was a property transfer application.
My signature appeared at the bottom.
Except I had never signed it.
When I confronted Marcus, he claimed the document was a mistake.
Evelyn called me paranoid.
Two days later, I found another copy.
This one had been notarized.
Someone was trying to steal my grandmother's apartment without my permission.
I quietly consulted a lawyer.
Then I began collecting evidence.
At first, I expected to uncover a financial secret.
I never imagined what else I would find.
Marcus suddenly lunged across the table.
"Give me that!"
I jerked my hand away.
His fingertips brushed my wrist.
But I was faster.
"Too late."
I moved toward the television mounted beside the glass doors.
Marcus rushed after me.
"Don't you dare!"
I inserted the USB drive.
A folder appeared on the screen.
Evelyn's expression changed.
"Marcus," she whispered. "Stop her."
But neither of them moved quickly enough.
I selected the first video.
The screen flickered.
Then Marcus appeared, sitting in his mother's private office.
Evelyn's voice filled our dining room.
"Once the apartment is transferred, she won't be able to do anything."
Marcus laughed in the recording.
"She'll believe whatever I tell her."
Evelyn leaned across her desk.
"And the signature?"
"Already handled."
My husband looked straight into the hidden camera.
"I practiced it until it looked exactly like hers."
Evelyn's face drained of color.
Marcus staggered backward.
I watched them without speaking.
For months, they had treated me like a foolish woman who couldn't understand their schemes.
Now their own voices were telling the truth.
Suddenly, headlights flooded the glass doors.
Two black luxury cars rolled to a stop outside.
Marcus turned toward the driveway.
"What the hell?"
The front door opened.
Heavy footsteps echoed through the hallway.
And my father walked into the dining room.
Arthur Bennett.
Sixty-eight years old.
Silver at his temples.
A man whose quiet voice had frightened far more powerful people than Marcus.
He carried a thick folder of legal documents.
Two men from his security team remained near the entrance.
My father looked at the shattered plate.
Then at my swollen cheek.
His expression changed.
"Who did this?"
Marcus tried to straighten his jacket.
"Arthur, this is a private family matter."
My father stepped forward.
"Nobody touches my daughter again."
For the first time in our marriage, Marcus looked afraid.
"Dad," I whispered.
My father reached me and gently touched my shoulder.
"I'm here, sweetheart."
I almost collapsed against him.
But I wasn't finished.
The first recording ended.
A second file appeared beneath it.
My father looked at the screen.
Then at Marcus.
"That forged transfer isn't the worst thing we found."
Evelyn gripped the back of a chair.
"Arthur, please. We can discuss this privately."
My father's voice was ice.
"You lost that privilege."
Marcus suddenly understood which recording I was about to play.
His face twisted in panic.
"Nia, don't."
I placed my finger on the remote.
The file was labeled:
AFTER_NIA_SIGNS.
I clicked.
Marcus screamed.
"TURN IT OFF!"
Then his recorded voice filled the room.
"Once she drinks it, she'll be too confused to fight us."
May you like
My father went completely still.
And Evelyn began to cry.
