Surprise

Chapter 6: The Father Who Never Left

The name hung in the air.

Thomas Whitmore.

For a few seconds, nobody reacted.

It was as if the world itself needed time to understand what I had just said.

Then Victor spoke.

"Say that again.""

His voice was barely a whisper.

I looked at him.

"Thomas Whitmore was your father.""

Victor stared at me.

Then he looked at Sarah.

She was frozen.

Not because she didn't believe me.

Because she knew.

She knew the impossible truth she had spent years searching for had just walked out of the shadows.

"My grandfather..."" Sarah whispered.

She looked at me.

"You knew?""

I nodded slowly.

"Yes.""

Her eyes filled with disbelief.

"But how?""

I lowered my gaze.

"Because Thomas was the one person who never gave up looking for you.""

Victor looked between us.

"Wait.""

He raised a hand.

"Everyone needs to stop.""

His breathing was heavier now.

"I have spent my entire life believing Daniel Hayes was my father.""

He pointed toward Daniel.

"Then I find out he wasn't.""

His finger moved toward Sarah.

"Then I find out her grandfather was searching for me.""

Then he looked at me.

"And now you're telling me a third man was my father?""

His voice cracked.

"How many lies have I been living?""

The question hurt because I knew the answer.

Too many.

I stepped closer.

"Victor...""

"No.""

He shook his head.

Not angrily.

Painfully.

"I need the truth.""

I nodded.

"You deserve that.""

The sun was beginning to set behind the diner.

The orange light reflected off the motorcycles parked outside.

A normal evening.

Except nothing about our lives was normal anymore.

Victor looked at me.

"Tell me everything.""

I took a deep breath.

And finally opened the door I had kept locked for fifty years.

"Thomas Whitmore was the man I loved before Daniel.""

Victor's expression changed.

"Before Daniel?""

I nodded.

"Yes.""

Sarah looked at me carefully.

"My grandfather never mentioned...""

"I know.""

I looked at her.

"Because Thomas didn't want anyone to know.""

"Why?""

I smiled sadly.

"Because he was afraid.""

Victor frowned.

"My father was afraid?""

I nodded.

"He was afraid of losing me.""

I looked toward the road.

"Thomas was a good man.""

The memory came back.

A young man with kind eyes.

A man who listened.

A man who made me feel safe.

"He worked as a private investigator.""

Sarah smiled faintly.

"That sounds like him.""

"He was stubborn.""

I laughed softly.

"He believed every mystery had an answer.""

Victor watched me.

"And I was a mystery?""

I looked at him.

"No.""

My voice broke.

"You were the answer.""

Nobody spoke.

"Thomas and I planned a life together.""

I looked down.

"But then Daniel appeared.""

Victor's face hardened.

I continued.

"Daniel was charming. He was successful. He knew exactly what to say.""

My fingers tightened around my walker.

"He convinced everyone he was the perfect man.""

Sarah nodded.

"My grandfather investigated him.""

"Yes.""

I looked at her.

"Thomas discovered Daniel wasn't who he claimed to be.""

Victor looked toward Daniel.

Daniel had remained silent.

But his face was pale.

"He knew," Victor whispered.

I nodded.

"He knew Daniel had secrets.""

Daniel finally spoke.

"You have no idea what you're talking about.""

Everyone turned.

His voice was colder now.

The fear had disappeared.

The old confidence was returning.

I looked at him.

"I know exactly what happened.""

Daniel smiled.

"Do you?""

Victor stepped forward.

"Let her talk.""

Daniel looked at him.

"You're really going to believe her?""

Victor's eyes narrowed.

"I don't know who to believe.""

He paused.

"But I know you're scared.""

That hit Daniel.

I saw it.

Just a flicker.

But it was there.

Daniel looked away.

I continued.

"When I found out I was pregnant, Thomas was happy.""

Victor looked at me.

"With me?""

I smiled through tears.

"More than anyone.""

I touched the photograph.

"He kept saying you would be the greatest thing that ever happened to us.""

Victor stared at the image.

"Then why didn't he raise me?""

My heart broke.

"Because Daniel took you.""

Silence.

"After Daniel discovered Thomas was your father, he became desperate.""

Victor looked confused.

"Why?""

"Because Daniel knew the truth would destroy him.""

I looked at Daniel.

"He wasn't your father.""

Daniel's face tightened.

"And he couldn't let anyone know.""

Victor stared at him.

"So he stole me.""

I nodded.

"Yes.""

Daniel laughed bitterly.

"You make it sound so simple.""

I turned.

"It was simple.""

His eyes hardened.

"No.""

He stepped closer.

"It wasn't.""

The bikers moved immediately.

Victor raised his hand.

They stopped.

Daniel looked at Victor.

"You think you know everything now.""

Victor said nothing.

Daniel continued.

"But you don't.""

I felt a cold feeling.

Because Daniel had always saved something.

One final weapon.

One final lie.

"You want the truth about Thomas?""

Daniel smiled.

"Ask her what happened after you disappeared.""

I froze.

Victor noticed.

"Margaret?""

I looked away.

Daniel smiled wider.

"Go ahead.""

"Stop.""

My voice was quiet.

But everyone heard it.

Victor looked at me.

"What happened?""

I closed my eyes.

Because this was the part I had never told him.

Not the police.

Not Sarah.

Not even Thomas.

The final piece.

"The night you disappeared...""

My voice shook.

"I found Thomas.""

Victor waited.

"He was injured.""

Sarah gasped.

"My grandfather?""

I nodded.

"He had followed Daniel.""

Daniel looked away.

Victor noticed.

"What happened?""

I swallowed.

"Thomas found where Daniel was hiding you.""

Everyone became still.

"He was going to bring you back.""

Victor whispered:

"But?""

I looked at Daniel.

"He never made it.""

Daniel's expression changed.

Victor saw.

"You know something.""

Daniel remained silent.

Victor stepped forward.

"YOU KNOW SOMETHING.""

Daniel finally looked at him.

And for the first time, there was something like guilt in his eyes.

"I didn't kill him.""

The sentence shocked everyone.

Because nobody had asked that question.

Victor stared.

"What did you do?""

Daniel looked at the ground.

"I left him there.""

Sarah covered her mouth.

My eyes filled.

"You knew.""

Daniel looked at me.

"Yes.""

My voice broke.

"You knew Thomas was hurt.""

He didn't answer.

"You knew he needed help.""

Silence.

"And you left him.""

Daniel's jaw tightened.

"He chose to interfere.""

Victor looked disgusted.

"You left my father to die?""

Daniel looked at him.

"I was trying to protect you.""

Victor laughed.

A painful, empty laugh.

"You keep saying that.""

He shook his head.

"But every time you say it, it sounds worse.""

Daniel looked away.

Sarah stepped forward.

"My grandfather survived.""

Everyone turned.

She looked at me.

"He survived.""

I froze.

"What?""

Sarah opened her folder quickly.

"I found hospital records.""

My hands began shaking.

"Sarah...""

"He wasn't found by police.""

She looked at Victor.

"Someone took him to a hospital.""

Victor stared.

"Someone?""

Sarah nodded.

"A nurse.""

I could barely breathe.

"Thomas was alive?""

Sarah nodded.

"For years.""

The world stopped.

I grabbed the edge of the table.

"No.""

Sarah's eyes filled.

"He lived for twenty-three years after that night.""

I shook my head.

"That's impossible.""

"It isn't.""

She pulled out a photograph.

A newer photograph.

An old man sitting in a wheelchair.

Older.

Weaker.

But unmistakably Thomas.

I touched my mouth.

A sound escaped.

Not a cry.

Not a word.

Just pain.

Because all these years...

I thought I had lost him too.

Victor looked at the picture.

"Where is he?""

Sarah hesitated.

I noticed.

"What?""

She looked at me.

"Margaret...""

My heart sank.

"Where is he?""

Sarah's voice became softer.

"He passed away three months ago.""

Everything inside me broke.

Three months.

I had spent fifty years thinking he was gone.

And he had been alive.

Three months ago.

Victor looked at me.

I don't know what he saw.

An old woman grieving.

A woman who had lost everything.

Or someone who had lost another chance.

"I’m sorry.""

Those two words from him nearly destroyed me.

Because he was comforting me.

After everything.

I looked at him.

"Did he know about you?""

Sarah nodded.

"He never stopped asking about Margaret.""

My breath caught.

"What?""

Sarah looked at me.

"He wrote letters.""

I stared.

"Letters?""

She opened the folder.

"He wrote hundreds.""

My hands shook.

"But I never got them.""

Daniel looked away.

And suddenly I knew.

I didn't need anyone to explain.

Daniel had taken those too.

Victor looked at him.

"You knew.""

Daniel said nothing.

Victor's voice became dangerous.

"You knew my father was alive.""

Daniel remained silent.

"You knew she was looking for me.""

Silence.

"You destroyed every chance we had.""

Daniel finally spoke.

"You don't understand.""

Victor's eyes filled with anger.

"No.""

He stepped closer.

"I understand perfectly.""

Daniel looked at him.

"You think I'm the villain.""

Victor shook his head.

"I don't think.""

A pause.

"I know.""

The words hit harder than shouting.

Daniel looked at me.

"This is what you wanted?""

I stared.

"What?""

"You wanted him to hate me.""

I shook my head.

"No.""

"Then what?""

My answer came quietly.

"I wanted my son to know the truth.""

Daniel stared.

And for the first time...

He had nothing to say.

Then Sarah's phone rang.

She looked at the screen.

Her face changed.

"Who is it?""

Victor asked.

Sarah didn't answer.

She pressed the phone to her ear.

"Hello?""

She listened.

Then slowly looked at me.

"What?""

I felt fear return.

"Sarah?""

She covered the microphone.

"It's the hospital.""

Nobody moved.

"What hospital?""

She looked at Victor.

"The hospital where my grandfather spent his last years.""

My heart started racing.

"Why are they calling?""

Sarah's face turned pale.

"Because they found something after cleaning out his room.""

Victor stepped closer.

"What?""

Sarah looked at me.

"They found a locked box.""

A chill went through me.

"What's inside?""

She swallowed.

"They said there was one instruction written on top.""

Everyone waited.

Sarah looked directly at me.

The blood drained from her face.

"It says...""

She paused.

"Only give this to Margaret Hayes when she finds her son.""

My hands started shaking.

Victor stared at the phone.

"What's in the box?""

Sarah slowly answered.

"They don't know.""

She looked at me.

"But they said there is one more thing.""

"What?""

Her voice dropped.

"They said Thomas left a message.""

A terrible silence filled the parking lot.

Sarah whispered:

"He wrote that if Victor was ever found...""

She looked at Daniel.

"...the truth about the night he disappeared would finally come out.""

May you like

And then she added the words that made Daniel take a step backward.

"Because Thomas said Victor was never the only child taken that night.""
