Chapter 8: The Daughter I Was Told To Forget
Victor didn't speak.
Not immediately.
He just stared at me.
I watched the questions forming in his eyes.
Confusion.
Shock.
Pain.
All the emotions he had carried his entire life were suddenly joined by one more.
A sister.
A person he never knew existed.
A person I had spent fifty years mourning.
"Emily," he repeated.
The name sounded strange coming from him.
Like a word from a language he had never learned.
I nodded slowly.
"Yes.""
Victor looked around the room.
Almost as if he expected someone else to appear.
"You're telling me I have a sister?""
My throat tightened.
"I had a daughter.""
The correction came quietly.
But Victor heard it.
His face changed.
"What does that mean?""
I looked down.
Because I had never told this story out loud.
Not once.
Not completely.
"Emily was born three years before you.""
Victor sat down slowly.
His eyes never left mine.
"I had a sister.""
I nodded.
"Yes.""
"Where is she?""
The question was simple.
But the answer was the hardest one.
"I don't know.""
Victor's expression fell.
Again.
Another missing person.
Another piece of his life stolen.
"How do you not know?""
I closed my eyes.
"Because Daniel and Eleanor made sure I wouldn't.""
Victor stood again.
"Tell me everything.""
His voice was firm.
Not angry.
Determined.
And I realized something.
He wasn't asking because he wanted to punish me.
He was asking because he needed to understand.
Just like I had needed answers for fifty years.
So I told him.
"When Emily was born, Thomas was there.""
I looked at the old photograph on the table.
"He held her before anyone else.""
Victor listened silently.
"She had your father's eyes.""
A small smile appeared on my face.
"Bright blue. Always curious.""
I laughed softly.
"She was stubborn too.""
Victor almost smiled.
"Sounds familiar.""
For a second, we were just a mother and son talking about family.
Then reality returned.
"But when Daniel came into our lives, everything changed.""
Victor's face hardened.
"Because of him.""
I nodded.
"Daniel wanted control.""
I touched the photograph.
"He knew Thomas was your biological father.""
"And Emily?""
I swallowed.
"He knew she wasn't his either.""
Victor went still.
"Wait.""
He frowned.
"If Daniel wasn't our father...""
"No.""
I shook my head.
"He wasn't.""
"Then why did he marry you?""
The answer still hurt after all these years.
"Because Daniel wanted what Thomas had.""
"What?""
"Family.""
Victor looked confused.
I continued.
"Thomas had something Daniel never had.""
I smiled sadly.
"People who trusted him.""
Victor understood.
"He wanted your life.""
I nodded.
"He wanted to become the man everyone believed Thomas was.""
The room became quiet.
"Then Emily disappeared.""
Victor whispered:
"When?""
"Before you.""
I looked at him.
"Six months before you disappeared.""
His face changed.
"What happened?""
I looked toward the window.
And suddenly I was back there.
A rainy night.
A child's room.
A missing blanket.
An empty bed.
"I woke up one morning.""
My voice shook.
"And Emily was gone.""
Victor's breathing slowed.
"The police came.""
I swallowed.
"They searched everywhere.""
"Did they find anything?""
I shook my head.
"Only one thing.""
"What?""
"A blue ribbon.""
Victor frowned.
"A ribbon?""
I nodded.
"Emily wore it in her hair every day.""
I looked down.
"I found it on the floor near the back door.""
Silence.
Victor sat down.
"Did you think Daniel took her?""
At the time?
Yes.
But I couldn't prove it.
"I suspected.""
"Why?""
"Because the night before she disappeared, I heard Daniel arguing with someone.""
"Who?""
I looked at him.
"Thomas.""
Victor froze.
"Your father?""
I nodded.
"They had discovered each other.""
Victor leaned forward.
"What does that mean?""
I took a deep breath.
"Thomas had proof that Daniel had lied about his past.""
Sarah had been right.
My grandfather had spent years investigating.
But the truth was bigger than any of us knew.
"Daniel knew Thomas could expose him.""
Victor looked angry.
"So he took Emily?""
I shook my head.
"I don't know.""
The answer bothered him.
"I don't know?""
I looked at him.
"Victor, that's the worst part.""
My eyes filled.
"I never knew if she was alive.""
A long silence followed.
Then Victor asked:
"And then I was born.""
I nodded.
"Yes.""
"Did Daniel take me because he had already taken her?""
"I don't know.""
I hated saying those words.
But they were true.
"Everything happened so fast.""
I looked at my hands.
"After Emily disappeared, Thomas searched.""
Victor listened.
"He found evidence.""
"What kind?""
"That Daniel had connections.""
I looked at him.
"People who helped him hide things.""
Victor's expression darkened.
"Like Eleanor.""
"Yes.""
"And then I disappeared.""
I nodded.
"The same people.""
The room felt colder.
Victor stood and walked toward the window.
"My whole life...""
His voice was quiet.
"I thought I was abandoned.""
I didn't interrupt.
"First my mother.""
He turned.
"Then I find out she didn't abandon me.""
A pause.
"Now I find out I had a sister who vanished before me.""
His voice cracked.
"How many things were stolen from me?""
I wanted to answer.
But I couldn't.
Because the truth was too painful.
Too many.
The next morning, Sarah arrived with the box.
She carried it carefully.
Like it contained something fragile.
Or dangerous.
Maybe both.
Victor had stayed at my apartment all night.
Neither of us slept much.
But neither of us wanted to be alone.
When Sarah walked in, she looked exhausted.
"The hospital said this was found in my grandfather's storage room.""
She placed the wooden box on the table.
It was small.
Old.
Locked.
On top was a handwritten note.
My name.
Margaret Hayes.
My hands shook.
Sarah noticed.
"Are you okay?""
I smiled sadly.
"No.""
She nodded.
"Fair.""
Victor looked at the box.
"How do we open it?""
Sarah handed him a small key.
"They found this taped underneath the drawer.""
Victor inserted it.
The lock clicked.
Nobody moved.
Then he opened it.
Inside were letters.
Photographs.
Documents.
And a small stuffed rabbit.
My heart stopped.
I reached for it.
"Emily.""
Victor looked at me.
"You recognize it?""
I nodded.
"It was hers.""
The little rabbit was faded.
One ear was torn.
But I remembered.
"I bought it for her when she turned four.""
Victor picked up a stack of papers.
"What's this?""
Sarah took them.
Her eyes moved quickly.
Then widened.
"Oh my God.""
"What?""
She looked at me.
"These are adoption records.""
My stomach tightened.
"Whose?""
Sarah looked down.
Then at Victor.
"Emily's.""
The room froze.
Victor whispered:
"She's alive.""
Sarah nodded slowly.
"These records show she was placed with another family.""
I grabbed the papers.
"Where?""
Sarah scanned the page.
Then stopped.
"Margaret...""
"What?""
She looked at me.
"The adoption was approved by Eleanor Hayes.""
My heart dropped.
"No.""
Victor looked confused.
"Meaning?""
Sarah looked at him.
"Meaning Eleanor knew exactly where Emily went.""
My hands trembled.
"She lied to me.""
Nobody answered.
Because we all knew.
She hadn't just hidden Victor.
She had hidden my daughter.
Victor looked at the documents.
"Who adopted her?""
Sarah turned the page.
Her face changed.
"What?""
She didn't answer.
"Sarah.""
She slowly handed the paper to me.
I looked down.
And my entire body went numb.
Because the name on the document was familiar.
Too familiar.
The same last name.
The same family.
The same people who had been connected to Daniel all along.
Victor saw my expression.
"Who?""
I whispered:
"Whitmore.""
Sarah frowned.
"Whitmore?""
I nodded.
"Emily was adopted by Thomas's family.""
Victor stared.
"That makes no sense.""
"No.""
I looked at the papers.
"It doesn't.""
Sarah read further.
Then she gasped.
"Wait.""
"What?""
She pointed to the signature.
"The adoption wasn't final.""
Victor looked at her.
"What does that mean?""
Sarah's hands shook.
"It means Emily wasn't legally adopted.""
I felt a chill.
"Then what happened?""
Sarah turned another page.
A handwritten note fell out.
Victor picked it up.
He read silently.
Then his face changed.
"What?""
He handed it to me.
The handwriting was old.
But I recognized it immediately.
Thomas.
My hands shook as I read.
*Margaret,*
*If you are reading this, then the truth has finally reached you.*
*I failed to protect you.*
*I failed to protect Emily.*
*But I never stopped searching.*
My vision blurred.
I continued.
*Daniel did not take Emily.*
My heart stopped.
*Eleanor did.*
I covered my mouth.
Victor stared.
Sarah whispered:
"No.""
The letter continued.
*She believed Emily was the only child who could expose the truth about Daniel.*
*Because Emily saw something that night.*
I looked up.
"What?""
Victor leaned closer.
I read the final lines.
*Emily was not taken because of who she was.*
*She was taken because she knew who Daniel really was.*
The room went silent.
Then the final sentence appeared.
The sentence that changed everything.
*Margaret, if you ever find Victor, tell him this:*
*Daniel Hayes was never trying to hide his crimes.*
*He was trying to hide the person who witnessed them.*
I lowered the paper.
Victor looked at me.
"Who witnessed them?""
I didn't answer.
Because I knew.
Sarah knew.
And somewhere deep inside, I had always known.
A little girl.
A blue ribbon.
A missing child.
A secret nobody wanted exposed.
Victor whispered:
"Emily.""
I nodded.
"Yes.""
Then my phone rang.
The number was unknown.
Again.
Victor looked at me.
"Answer it.""
I did.
A woman's voice came through.
Older.
Trembling.
"Is this Margaret Hayes?""
My hand froze.
"Yes.""
A pause.
Then:
"My name is Emily.""
The room disappeared.
I couldn't breathe.
The voice continued.
"I think I've finally found my mother.""
I closed my eyes.
Tears fell.
After fifty years.
After all the lies.
After all the pain.
My daughter was alive.
Then Emily whispered the words that made Victor and Sarah look at each other in horror.
"But there's something you need to know.""
My fingers tightened around the phone.
"What?""
Her voice broke.
"I remember the night I disappeared.""
Silence.
"And I remember who helped Eleanor take me.""
Victor leaned closer.
"Who?""
Emily answered softly.
A name.
A name none of us expected.
A name that changed the entire story.
"It was Daniel's son.""
I froze.
Victor looked at me.
"Daniel's son?""
Emily whispered:
"Yes.""
My blood ran cold.
Because Daniel only had one son.
The one standing in front of me.
Victor.
And then Emily said:
"Your brother wasn't taken, Margaret.""
May you like
The phone shook in my hand.
"He helped them.""
