Chapter 7

Only three people at the precinct knew about Anna.
Reyes.
My captain.
And me.
So when that photo landed on my desk, the room went quiet.
Reyes picked it up with gloves.
“Where did they get this?”
I could barely answer.
“It was from a newspaper clipping.”
Anna had been eight when she disappeared from a county fair outside San Antonio.
I was fourteen.
I let go of her hand to buy lemonade.
She was gone in less than a minute.
They found her three days later.
Alive.
But never the same.
She died years later from an overdose.
My family never recovered.
Neither did I.
That was why Lucy’s face in the alley had stopped my breathing.
Same fear.
Same small hand.
Same world full of adults looking away.
Captain Morris pulled me into his office.
“You’re too close.”
“I know.”
“That means I should remove you from contact.”
“I know.”
He studied me.
“But I’m not blind. That kid trusts you.”
I looked at the floor.
“I can’t fail her.”
“Then don’t make this about your sister.”
That hurt because it was fair.
Detective Karen traced the threat to a burner phone bought by a man connected to Charles’s family lawyer.
Then Madison was found.
Alive.
Barely.
In a motel outside Waco.
She had been beaten, drugged, and left with no ID.
When she woke up, the first thing she said was, “Did Lucy get him out?”
Karen called me.
“You need to hear this.”
Madison confirmed Charles hired her.
She confirmed he planned to accuse Emily of kidnapping.
He wanted full control of Leo’s trust and Emily’s inheritance after divorce.
He believed a public scandal would destroy her.
“But why hide Leo with Sarah?” Karen asked.
Madison cried.
“Because Charles needed him found in bad conditions. He wanted Emily blamed for neglect.”
“And Brent?”
“Brent improvised. He got greedy.”
Madison also revealed the final piece.
Charles had paid a doctor to drug Sarah through fake prescriptions so she would look like an addict if police found her.
That doctor was Emily’s own psychiatrist.
The case turned federal overnight.
Emily’s custody hearing became a war.
Charles’s mother testified that Emily was “fragile.”
Then Madison entered the courtroom in a wheelchair.
The room went silent.
She told the judge everything.
Lucy’s recorded interview played after.
Her small voice filled the speakers.
“I carried Leo because grown-ups were fighting about money.”
Emily broke down.
The judge granted her full emergency custody.
Charles was denied all contact.
Afterward, Emily found me in the hallway.
“Daniel, I want to help Lucy.”
I looked at her.
“How?”
May you like
Her answer knocked the air out of me.
“I want to petition for kinship-style foster placement until Sarah is healthy. Lucy saved my son. I don’t want her lost in the system.”
