Surprise

Chapter 7

I stared at the date.

Six seventeen in the morning.

That was when doctors were operating to save me and Owen.

I had been under anesthesia.

I couldn't have signed anything.

Rachel sat beside me while Dana explained.

"The lender has preserved the submission records."

I swallowed.

"Does that prove someone forged my signature?"

"It strongly raises questions about the document's authenticity. A formal investigation will establish what happened."

I looked at Owen.

He was sleeping against my chest.

Someone had used my name while I lay helpless on an operating table.

The thought made me physically sick.

"Who submitted it?"

Dana hesitated.

"The records identify an account associated with Carver Family Holdings."

Doreen's company.

I closed my eyes.

For months, I'd tried to convince myself Doreen was simply controlling.

That she loved Nathan too much.

That she didn't know how to share.

But now I saw something darker.

She hadn't merely wanted influence.

She wanted control over everything.

My medical care.

My marriage.

My son.

My home.

And apparently, my money.

The next morning, hospital compliance officer Thomas Reed came to see me.

Patricia Cole accompanied him.

They explained that the review of my chart was continuing.

Several entries had been flagged because the supporting information was inconsistent.

Some statements attributed to me came from family reports rather than direct clinical observations.

A separate access investigation had also confirmed an improper use of an administrative account.

I listened carefully.

"Was Doreen involved?"

Thomas answered cautiously.

"The account was assigned to a foundation employee. We're reviewing who used the credentials and how information was shared."

I nodded.

"Can you tell me who the employee was?"

"Not yet."

I wanted to scream.

Every answer seemed to open another door.

And behind each door was another secret.

Then Patricia said something important.

"Dr. Rusk has been removed from decisions about your ongoing care while the review continues."

I stared at her.

"Really?"

She nodded.

"Dr. Harris will continue managing your recovery."

I felt tears rise.

For the first time, I wasn't being told to trust people simply because they held authority.

Their actions were being examined.

And that mattered.

Later that afternoon, Rachel received a call from Dana.

She listened quietly.

Then looked at me.

"Leah, we need to talk."

My stomach tightened.

"What happened?"

"Dana found a connection between the refinance application and Doreen's business debt."

I sat straighter.

"What connection?"

"The loan proceeds were intended to pay a company that has a claim against Carver Family Holdings."

I stared at her.

"So she wanted to use our house to pay her debts?"

Rachel nodded.

"That's what the documents suggest."

My hands trembled.

I remembered Nathan telling me his mother was worried about family stability.

I remembered Doreen insisting Owen needed to be raised with proper Carver traditions.

I remembered her saying our little house wasn't suitable for a family heir.

Now it all sounded different.

What if she needed us financially dependent on her?

What if taking Owen was part of a larger plan to control Nathan?

Or perhaps she simply believed she was entitled to everything we had.

I didn't know.

But I was finished making excuses for her.

That evening, I called Nathan.

Not because I forgave him.

Because I needed one answer.

He picked up immediately.

"Leah?"

I took a breath.

"Did you know your mother was using our house to pay her business debts?"

Silence.

Then:

"No."

I closed my eyes.

"Did you know she tried to make herself the recipient of the loan proceeds?"

"No."

"Did you know someone submitted my signature while I was unconscious?"

His breath caught.

"What?"

I explained.

For several seconds, he said nothing.

Then I heard him whisper:

"Oh my God."

I stared at the wall.

"Nathan, I need you to understand something."

He sounded broken.

"I'm listening."

"I don't know if you're lying. I don't know if you're telling the truth. And I hate that I can't tell anymore."

He began crying.

"I know."

I swallowed.

"That's what your choices did to us."

He didn't argue.

For once, he didn't defend Doreen.

He simply said:

"I'm sorry."

I ended the call.

Then I cried until Rachel came to sit beside me.

She didn't tell me to forgive him.

She didn't tell me to leave him.

She simply held my hand.

Sometimes that was enough.

Two days later, the hospital approved my discharge.

Dr. Harris reviewed my incision care, pain medication, warning signs, and follow-up appointments.

Mae helped me practice lifting Owen safely without straining my abdomen.

Alicia confirmed that my discharge planning reflected my own preferences.

I chose to stay with Rachel.

Not Doreen.

Not Nathan.

Rachel had prepared her guest bedroom for us.

There was a bassinet beside the bed.

A comfortable chair.

Fresh sheets.

And a small basket of diapers.

When I walked inside, I started crying.

Rachel looked worried.

"What's wrong?"

I shook my head.

"Nothing."

She hugged me.

"Then why are you crying?"

I looked around.

"Because you made room for us."

Her eyes filled.

"Of course I did."

I held Owen closer.

For the first time since his birth, I wasn't afraid someone would enter the room and take him.

That night, Rachel made soup.

I ate slowly while Owen slept beside me.

The house was quiet.

Safe.

Ordinary.

I had never appreciated ordinary so much.

Then my phone rang.

Dana.

I answered immediately.

"Hello?"

Her voice was serious.

"Leah, we've received an update about the financial documents."

My stomach tightened.

"What happened?"

"The lender's fraud team has identified additional irregularities."

I closed my eyes.

"More?"

"Yes."

She paused.

"And the hospital has referred its record-access findings for further investigation."

I looked at Rachel.

She immediately moved closer.

Dana continued.

"There may be evidence connecting the improper medical-record access to the same people involved in the financial transaction."

My heart pounded.

"How?"

"We don't know the full picture yet. But the timing suggests the events may not be separate."

I stared at Owen.

The psychiatric referral.

The attempt to separate us.

The forged financial authorization.

The house.

Suddenly, the entire plan seemed to have one purpose.

Make me powerless.

And while I was unable to challenge anything, move the money.

I swallowed.

"Dana."

"Yes?"

My voice shook.

"What if they weren't only trying to take my baby?"

There was silence.

May you like

Then I whispered:

"What if they were trying to take everything?"
