Surprise

Chapter 5

Vanessa believed heartbreak made me weak.

She was wrong.

Heartbreak made me clear.

For years, I had reacted to Daniel.

His dreams.

His problems.

His needs.

Now every decision I made was about my daughter and me.

Detective Hill set up a command center inside Dad’s house.

Technology teams traced Vanessa’s messages.

Security reviewed traffic cameras.

Caroline worked beside federal investigators who had joined the financial case.

Dad stayed near me.

But he didn’t interfere.

Not anymore.

“Can we trace the picture?” I asked.

Hill nodded.

“We’re analyzing metadata.”

“Anything visible?”

“A concrete wall. Industrial lighting. Could be hundreds of buildings.”

I studied the photograph again.

Daniel’s shirt was torn.

His hands were tied.

But something bothered me.

“Zoom in.”

Hill handed me a tablet.

I enlarged Daniel’s face.

Then his hands.

The rope looked loose.

Too loose.

I stared.

“What?”

Dad asked.

“I don’t know.”

Then I noticed Daniel’s watch.

He always wore it on his left wrist.

In the photograph, it was on his right.

My skin prickled.

“This picture is mirrored.”

Hill leaned closer.

“So?”

I zoomed toward the background.

A blurred sign appeared behind Vanessa.

Reversed letters.

Hill’s technician corrected the image.

Three letters became visible.

RMS.

Dad frowned.

“That logo.”

I knew it too.

“Riverside Mechanical Storage.”

One of Daniel’s abandoned development sites.

Hill moved instantly.

Teams were dispatched.

I expected fear.

Instead, I felt something else.

Suspicion.

“Why would Vanessa take him to one of his own properties?”

Nobody answered.

Thirty minutes later, police entered the building.

Empty.

No Daniel.

No Vanessa.

Only a chair.

Rope.

Fake blood.

My stomach sank.

Hill called me from the site.

“This kidnapping was staged.”

Dad swore.

I sat slowly.

Of course.

Daniel wasn’t Vanessa’s prisoner.

He was her partner.

Again.

A camera had been left facing the chair.

Hill recovered it.

The memory card contained footage of Daniel sitting down willingly.

Vanessa applying makeup blood to his mouth.

Daniel laughing.

I watched only ten seconds.

Then I told them to stop.

The humiliation burned deeper than the affair.

He had believed I was still stupid enough to save him.

Caroline sat beside me.

“I’m sorry.”

“Don’t be.”

My voice sounded different.

Stronger.

“They just gave us more evidence.”

Dad almost smiled.

“That’s my daughter.”

But Hill wasn’t smiling when he returned.

“The staged kidnapping may have been a distraction.”

“From what?”

He looked at my father.

“Someone attempted to enter the Bennett estate through the service road forty minutes ago.”

My blood chilled.

“Who?”

“A man matching Victor Lane.”

The insurance broker.

“Why?”

“We don’t know.”

My hand covered my stomach.

Maybe the kidnapping wasn’t meant to get my shares.

Maybe it was meant to pull police resources away from me.

Hill increased security immediately.

Then federal agents located Vanessa.

She had used a credit card at a private airport.

“She’s leaving?”

“Trying to.”

“What about Daniel?”

“No sign.”

Vanessa was arrested before reaching the aircraft.

Daniel remained missing.

For six hours.

Then he appeared at a police station with an attorney.

Voluntarily.

He claimed Vanessa forced him into staging the kidnapping.

Nobody believed him.

Neither did I.

The next morning, I met Caroline to sign divorce papers.

My hand shook only once.

“Ready?”

she asked.

“Yes.”

I signed.

Emma Bennett Carter.

Then paused.

“I want Bennett back.”

Caroline smiled.

“Already prepared.”

I signed again.

Emma Bennett.

It felt like coming home to myself.

Daniel’s attorney requested a private meeting.

I refused.

Then Daniel sent a handwritten letter.

I almost threw it away.

Instead, I read it.

Emma,

I know I destroyed us.

Vanessa made me believe I deserved a bigger life.

More money.

More respect.

More control.

But none of that explains what I did.

I betrayed you.

I lied.

I became someone I hate.

I never wanted you hurt.

Whatever else you believe, believe that.

I stopped there.

Maybe he meant it.

Maybe he didn’t.

The difference no longer controlled me.

Caroline entered with new documents.

“We traced part of the stolen money.”

“How much?”

“Nearly nine million.”

“Where?”

“Accounts connected to Victor Lane.”

“So Vanessa wasn’t keeping it all?”

“No.”

She sat across from me.

“We think Victor was the architect of the fraud.”

“Daniel and Vanessa were helping him.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Daniel needed money. Vanessa wanted money. Victor understood how to hide it.”

I thought about the insurance policy.

“And my death would have solved their debt.”

Caroline’s expression tightened.

“We still don’t know whether anyone intended to harm you.”

My phone rang.

Detective Hill.

His voice was urgent.

“Emma, we found Victor.”

“Where?”

“He was trying to cross the border.”

My heart jumped.

“Did he talk?”

“Not yet.”

“But we found something in his vehicle.”

“What?”

“A small black case.”

I waited.

“Inside were copies of your medical schedule, photographs of your car, and records showing payments to a mechanic.”

My stomach dropped.

“The brakes.”

“Yes.”

I couldn’t breathe.

Dad took my hand.

Hill continued.

“There’s more.”

I almost didn’t want to hear it.

“What?”

“The mechanic gave a statement.”

I closed my eyes.

“He admits Victor paid him to damage your brake line.”

Dad stood abruptly.

“And Victor?”

“He claims Daniel ordered it.”

Everything inside me stopped.

I stared at the wall.

“No.”

Hill’s voice softened.

“We have not verified that claim.”

My mind flashed to Daniel hugging me after the crash.

Crying.

Kissing my forehead.

Promising he almost lost everything.

Could anyone act that well?

“Does Daniel know Victor was arrested?”

“Not yet.”

I stood.

“I want to see him.”

Dad frowned.

“Emma.”

“I need to look him in the face.”

Hill hesitated.

Then agreed.

Two hours later, I entered an interview room at the police station.

Daniel sat across from me.

He looked exhausted.

“Emma.”

I didn’t sit.

“Victor was arrested.”

Daniel’s face changed.

Barely.

But enough.

“You knew.”

“No.”

“He says you paid him to have my brakes cut.”

Daniel stood.

“That’s a lie.”

“Sit down.”

He stared at me.

Then slowly obeyed.

I stepped closer.

“Tell me the truth.”

“I didn’t do it.”

“Did Vanessa?”

“I don’t know.”

“Did you ever discuss my death?”

His eyes filled.

“Not seriously.”

My entire body went cold.

Not seriously.

I whispered.

“What does that mean?”

May you like

Daniel looked down.

And in that moment, I knew there was still one final horror he had not told me.
