Surprise

Chapter 2

Richard did not move for several seconds.

He just stared at the camera.

Then he turned back to Vanessa.

“Tell me again,” he said quietly.

Vanessa blinked.

“What?”

“Tell me again how he slipped.”

Her lips parted.

“Richard, I was upset. I don’t remember every second.”

“You remembered a minute ago.”

The house felt too still.

I could hear Leo breathing against me.

Small, uneven breaths.

Richard walked to the console table beneath the camera and opened the security app on his phone.

Vanessa rushed toward him.

“Don’t.”

That one word told the truth before the video did.

Richard looked at her.

His voice dropped.

“Why not?”

“Because this is humiliating,” she said. “Because your wife is making a scene.”

“My son fell down the stairs.”

“He is fine.”

I stepped forward.

“He is not fine.”

Vanessa’s eyes cut to me.

“You always overreact.”

Richard tapped the screen.

The video loaded.

I watched his face while he watched it.

At first, confusion.

Then disbelief.

Then something I had never seen in him before.

Pure devastation.

He turned the phone toward me.

I did not want to look.

But I did.

The screen showed Leo at the top of the stairs, holding his blue dinosaur blanket.

Vanessa stood behind him.

She bent down.

She said something.

Leo stepped back.

Then her hand shot forward.

Not a hard shove.

Not the kind that looked dramatic.

Just one quick push between his little shoulders.

Enough.

Enough to send him tumbling.

Enough to destroy every lie in the room.

Richard lowered the phone.

His hand was shaking.

“Vanessa.”

She backed away.

“No. That’s not what it looks like.”

“It looks like you pushed my child down the stairs.”

“He was annoying me!”

The words burst out of her.

Then she clapped both hands over her mouth.

I felt Richard go still beside me.

Vanessa’s eyes filled with panic.

“I didn’t mean that. I mean he was running around, and I barely touched him.”

“You could have killed him,” I said.

She pointed at me.

“You shut up.”

Richard stepped between us.

“Do not speak to my wife.”

Vanessa laughed, but it cracked in the middle.

“Your wife? She has poisoned you. I was here before her. I helped Mom raise you. I gave up everything for this family.”

“You pushed my son.”

“I made a mistake!”

“A mistake is dropping a glass.”

His voice rose.

“This was my baby on the stairs.”

Leo started crying again.

Richard’s anger disappeared instantly.

He came to us and touched Leo’s back with trembling fingers.

“Daddy’s here,” he whispered. “I’m so sorry.”

Leo reached one arm toward him.

Richard took him gently, and the moment Leo leaned into his chest, Richard closed his eyes like something inside him had broken.

Vanessa watched them.

Her expression changed again.

Not guilt.

Jealousy.

That terrified me more than the push.

Richard saw it too.

“Anna,” he said, “call Dr. Miller. I want Leo checked tonight.”

I nodded.

Vanessa scoffed.

“For heaven’s sake, he doesn’t need a doctor.”

Richard turned on her so sharply she stepped back.

“You do not get to decide what he needs.”

Then he dialed with one hand.

“Who are you calling?” Vanessa demanded.

“The police.”

Her face went white.

“Richard, don’t be ridiculous.”

He pressed the phone to his ear.

“My sister pushed my two-year-old son down the stairs. We have video.”

Vanessa lunged toward him.

I stepped back with Leo, but Richard caught her wrist before she reached the phone.

“Stop,” he said.

For the first time, Vanessa looked truly afraid.

May you like

Not of what she had done.

Of finally being unable to control the story.
