Surprise

Chapter 2

“What basement?”

My voice sounded unfamiliar.

Ethan pressed his face against my shoulder.

He didn't answer.

I looked toward Vanessa.

Her face had gone completely still.

“What has been happening in my basement?”

She forced a laugh.

“David, he's confused.”

I stared at her.

“Don't.”

“Children imagine things.”

“My son isn't imagining the dog food on the floor.”

Vanessa's expression tightened.

I turned toward Rosa.

“Please tell me what you know.”

She wiped her cheeks.

“Mr. David, I saw Mrs. Vanessa taking Ethan downstairs several times.”

My stomach dropped.

“When?”

“Usually when you were away.”

I looked down at Ethan.

He was gripping my shirt so tightly that his knuckles had turned pale.

“Baby,” I whispered, “did Vanessa lock you downstairs?”

He nodded.

My chest tightened painfully.

“For how long?”

His eyes filled.

“I don't know.”

Vanessa suddenly stepped forward.

“That's enough!”

I moved away from her.

“Stay back.”

She pointed at Rosa.

“She put him up to this!”

Rosa shook her head.

“No, ma'am.”

“Shut up!”

I raised my hand.

“Stop speaking to her like that.”

Vanessa stared at me.

I had never spoken to her with such cold certainty.

And for the first time, she seemed to understand that I wasn't going to accept another explanation.

I called 911.

The dispatcher answered immediately.

I explained that my eight-year-old son had been threatened and mistreated by his stepmother.

I told her about the camera recording.

I described the marks on his arms.

And I explained that he had mentioned being locked in the basement.

The dispatcher asked whether we were safe.

I looked at Vanessa.

“For the moment.”

She instructed me to remain with Ethan, avoid further confrontation, and wait for officers.

I agreed.

Then I carried my son toward the kitchen.

Vanessa followed.

“David, you are making a terrible mistake.”

I stopped.

“No.”

My voice shook.

“My mistake was trusting you when my son needed me to listen.”

She opened her mouth.

I walked away.

Rosa followed us into the kitchen.

She brought Ethan a glass of water.

He held it with both hands.

But he didn't drink.

“Sweetheart,” I whispered, “would you like something to eat?”

He stared at me.

“Am I allowed?”

Those three words nearly brought me to my knees.

I crouched beside his chair.

“Of course you're allowed.”

He looked toward the living room.

“Vanessa said I have to earn dinner.”

I closed my eyes.

I remembered all the nights I returned home late.

Vanessa would tell me Ethan had eaten already.

Sometimes he seemed unusually hungry the next morning.

I thought he was growing.

Now I wondered how often he had gone without proper meals.

Rosa quietly placed a sandwich on the table.

Ethan stared at it.

Then he looked at me.

“Can I eat the whole thing?”

My eyes burned.

“Yes, baby.”

He took a small bite.

Then another.

And suddenly, he began crying while he ate.

I sat beside him.

I didn't rush him.

I simply stayed.

Outside, sirens approached.

Vanessa was still in the living room when the officers arrived.

She immediately began speaking.

“My husband is overreacting.”

One officer asked her to stop.

Another came into the kitchen.

I stood.

“I'm David Carter.”

He nodded.

“Where is the child?”

I stepped aside.

Ethan looked frightened when he saw the uniform.

I knelt beside him.

“Sweetheart, these officers are here to help.”

He gripped my hand.

“Am I going away?”

My throat tightened.

“No. We're going to make sure you're safe.”

The officer spoke gently.

He didn't pressure Ethan.

He asked whether he was hurt and whether he felt safe.

Ethan looked at me.

Then whispered, “I don't want to be alone with Vanessa.”

The officer nodded.

“Thank you for telling me.”

He turned toward me.

“We'll need to document what happened and arrange medical care.”

I agreed immediately.

Then I remembered the camera footage.

“My security system recorded part of it.”

The officer asked me not to alter the file.

I led him into my office.

The recording was still available.

I opened it.

Then stepped aside.

I couldn't bear to watch again.

But I heard Vanessa's voice.

I heard Ethan pleading.

And I heard the officer quietly exhale.

When the video ended, he looked at me.

“Mr. Carter, we need a copy of this.”

I nodded.

“Whatever you need.”

He asked whether there were other cameras.

“Yes.”

“Any in the basement?”

I hesitated.

“There used to be one near the storage room.”

I opened the security dashboard.

The basement camera showed as disconnected.

The last recorded image was from eleven days earlier.

My stomach tightened.

I selected the final clip.

The screen showed Vanessa standing near the basement stairs.

She looked directly toward the camera.

Then reached up.

The picture disappeared.

I stared at the black screen.

For eleven days, that camera had been offline.

And I hadn't noticed.

The officer looked toward me.

“Do you have access to the basement?”

“Yes.”

“Please remain here while we check it.”

I nodded.

But my hands were shaking.

A few minutes later, another officer returned.

His expression was grim.

“Mr. Carter, there's a room downstairs we need you to identify.”

I stood.

“What room?”

“A storage room with a lock on the outside.”

My stomach dropped.

I knew the room.

It used to hold Christmas decorations.

Old furniture.

Boxes from my late wife's family.

I hadn't opened it in months.

“What did you find?”

The officer hesitated.

“There are signs someone has been staying in there.”

I felt dizzy.

“No.”

He spoke carefully.

“A small blanket. Children's clothing. Empty water bottles.”

I grabbed the edge of the desk.

My son.

My little boy.

Had been locked in a basement room while I sat upstairs believing he was safe.

I wanted to scream.

Instead, I whispered, “Was there a bed?”

The officer shook his head.

I closed my eyes.

For a moment, I couldn't breathe.

Then I remembered something.

Two weeks earlier, Ethan had fallen asleep at the breakfast table.

Vanessa told me he'd been playing video games too late.

I had scolded him.

Told him he needed better habits.

He apologized.

And I hadn't asked another question.

I pressed my hands against my face.

The officer spoke gently.

“Mr. Carter, your son needs you right now.”

I nodded.

He was right.

My guilt could wait.

Ethan couldn't.

When I returned to the kitchen, Rosa was sitting beside him.

He was drawing something on a paper napkin.

I sat next to him.

“Hey, buddy.”

He looked up.

“Daddy?”

“Yes?”

“Are they taking Vanessa away?”

I swallowed.

“They're investigating what happened.”

He nodded.

Then whispered, “Will she come back?”

I took his hand.

“I'm going to make sure you're protected.”

His shoulders relaxed slightly.

But then he looked toward the hallway.

“Daddy?”

“What is it?”

He swallowed.

“There's something in the basement you should see.”

My heart began pounding.

“What?”

He looked at Rosa.

Then back at me.

“Vanessa kept a notebook.”

I stared at him.

“What notebook?”

His voice dropped.

“The one where she wrote down everything I did wrong.”

I felt sick.

Then he added something that made my blood run cold.

“She said when the notebook was full, I wouldn't be your son anymore.”

I stared at my little boy.

May you like

And I realized Vanessa hadn't merely been punishing him.

She had been trying to convince him that my love could be taken away.
