Mitchell’s custody plan terrified me more than his arrest relieved me.
Rebecca read every page.
Then she looked at me.
“He was building a case.”
“Could he actually take her?”
“Not based on this.”
“But he’s biologically her father.”
“Biology does not erase criminal conception.”
I exhaled.
“He deliberately substituted genetic material without your consent. That is catastrophic for him legally.”
“Still.”
“I know.”
She squeezed my hand.
“We prepare.”
So we did.
My life became appointments.
