Surprise

Chapter 7

We found Linda’s house empty.

Front door unlocked.

Coffee still warm on the kitchen counter.

Her husband’s medication lined up beside the sink.

No sign of struggle.

That almost made it worse.

Someone had made her leave quietly.

CID traced the SUV to a contractor lot outside Fayetteville.

Cole Strategic Solutions.

Vanessa’s husband, Grant Cole, denied knowing anything.

He did it with the same polished smile Vanessa used.

“My wife is being targeted by a disgruntled officer with family connections,” he said.

I watched the interview behind glass.

Hannah stood beside me.

“He sounds rehearsed.”

“He is.”

Grant’s lawyer tried to stop the search warrant.

Failed.

By dusk, agents raided the contractor lot.

They did not find Linda.

They found invoices.

Hard drives.

Shredded personnel files.

And a locked storage room with boxes labeled Civilian HR Disputes.

Inside were years of vanished complaints.

Some about food.

Some about injuries.

Some about harassment.

One box was marked Mercer.

My stomach tightened.

Linda had not complained once.

She had complained seventeen times.

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered on speaker.

Linda’s voice trembled.

“General Carter?”

“Linda, where are you?”

“I don’t know. They covered the windows.”

“Are you hurt?”

“No. But they said if I testify, my husband loses his care.”

“Who said that?”

A muffled sound.

Then Grant Cole’s voice came on.

“General, this is unnecessary.”

The room froze.

I signaled Hannah to trace the call.

Grant continued, calm as ever.

“Linda is safe. You can end this circus before more good people are damaged.”

“Put Linda back on.”

“Drop the contract investigation.”

“No.”

His voice hardened.

“You are very confident for someone whose reputation is already bleeding.”

“You kidnapped a federal witness.”

He chuckled.

“Witness? She’s a cafeteria worker.”

There it was.

The rot beneath the uniform, the contracts, the polite words.

“She is a person,” I said.

“And you are emotional.”

“Thank you for confirming motive.”

He went silent.

I looked at Hannah.

She gave me a thumbs-up.

Trace active.

I kept him talking.

“You and Vanessa built a profit scheme using food service.”

“You can’t prove that.”

“I can prove you threatened Linda.”

“You can prove a phone call.”

“And the illegal leak?”

He laughed softly.

“Your file was easy to get. People don’t protect damaged women as carefully as they protect important men.”

Hannah’s jaw tightened.

The trace completed.

A farmhouse outside Spring Lake.

CID moved immediately.

I wanted to go.

My aide blocked the door.

“Ma’am, no.”

“Hannah.”

“You are the target too.”

She was right.

I hated it.

Forty minutes later, agents found Linda locked in a back room.

Alive.

Terrified.

Clutching her husband’s medical card in both hands.

Grant Cole was arrested trying to leave through a field behind the property.

When they brought Linda out, she asked one question.

May you like

“Did I miss my appointment?”

I had to turn away.
