Chapter 6: The Truth Behind The Wolf Patch
The silence after Ryder’s confession was worse than any threat.
A threat could be fought.
A lie could be exposed.
But a truth like this had nowhere to go.
It simply sat in the middle of the room and waited for everyone to accept it.
Walter Bennett stared at Ryder Cole.
The man who had walked into his life carrying answers.
The man who had claimed to know Evan.
The man who had worn the symbol of loyalty for decades.
The man his son had warned him about.
“Who are you?””
Walter’s voice was quiet.
But everyone heard the pain underneath.
Ryder looked down.
“I’m still Ryder Cole.””
“That’s not what I asked.””
The old biker lifted his eyes.
Walter stepped closer.
“My son said you were the reason he disappeared.””
Ryder nodded slowly.
“Yes.””
Jack’s hand tightened.
“You’re admitting it?””
Ryder looked at him.
“I’m admitting Evan believed that.””
“That’s not the same thing.””
“No.””
Ryder’s voice was tired.
“It isn’t.””
Marcus stepped forward.
“Then explain.””
Ryder looked around the garage.
At the men wearing Iron Wolves patches.
At the club he built.
At the people who had spent their lives believing his story.
“I owe you all the truth.””
Jack shook his head.
“You owed us the truth fifteen years ago.””
Ryder accepted the anger.
“I know.””
“No, you don’t.””
Jack’s voice sharpened.
“You were our founder.””
A pause.
“You were the man who taught us that secrets destroy families.””
Ryder looked down.
“And I became one.””
Nobody responded.
Because that was the part that hurt most.
Walter walked toward the workbench.
The old tools hanging there reminded him of Evan.
Of Samuel.
Of all the years he spent believing pieces of his family had simply vanished.
“My son left me a message.””
Ryder nodded.
“Yes.””
“He wanted me to distrust you.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Ryder took a deep breath.
“Because Evan found out something about me.””
“What?””
Ryder looked at the Iron Wolves patch on Jack’s vest.
“The Iron Wolves weren’t created to fight Blackridge.””
Jack frowned.
“What?””
“They were created because of Blackridge.””
The room went still.
Ryder continued.
“Samuel discovered Blackridge was bigger than anyone understood.””
He looked at Walter.
“He knew exposing them would get people killed.””
“So he created the club.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“To protect people.””
Jack looked confused.
“You’re saying the Iron Wolves were never a motorcycle club.””
Ryder shook his head.
“Not at first.””
He pointed at the patch.
“The wolves were never about riding.””
“Then what were they about?””
Ryder looked at Walter.
“Watching.””
The word made everyone uncomfortable.
“Watching what?””
“Watching the people who watched everyone else.””
Daniel nodded slowly.
“That’s why Blackridge hated him.””
Ryder looked at him.
“Yes.””
Jack stared.
“Wait.””
He turned toward Daniel.
“You knew this?””
Daniel looked away.
“I knew parts.””
“You knew enough.””
Daniel didn’t argue.
Jack looked between them.
“Everyone knew something except us.””
Nobody answered.
Because it was true.
Walter sat at the kitchen table again.
The old man looked exhausted.
But there was something different now.
Before, he had been searching for a memory.
Now he was searching for the truth.
“My brother.””
Ryder looked at him.
“Samuel.””
“He started this.””
“Yes.””
“And Evan continued it.””
“Yes.””
“Why didn’t they tell me?””
Ryder’s expression softened.
“Because Samuel knew what would happen.””
Walter frowned.
“What?””
“You would have joined him.””
Walter looked surprised.
“I was a mechanic.””
Ryder smiled faintly.
“That never mattered.””
He looked at Walter.
“You were brave.””
Walter shook his head.
“No.””
“Yes.””
Ryder pointed toward him.
“You think courage is fighting?””
A pause.
“Samuel didn’t.””
Walter looked down.
“He always said courage was staying when everyone else ran.””
Ryder nodded.
“That sounds like him.””
Walter closed his eyes.
For a moment, he was somewhere else.
Somewhere twenty-two years earlier.
Then he opened them.
“And Evan?””
Ryder looked away.
“That’s where I failed.””
The room became colder.
Jack noticed the change.
Ryder had talked about Samuel with respect.
About the club with regret.
But when he spoke about Evan…
There was guilt.
Real guilt.
“What happened?”” Jack asked.
Ryder didn’t answer immediately.
Then:
“Evan found the archive.””
Daniel’s face changed.
“You’re sure?””
“Yes.””
“What archive?””
Jack looked between them.
Ryder answered:
“The one Samuel spent his life protecting.””
Walter frowned.
“Protecting what?””
“Evidence.””
“Against Blackridge?””
“Yes.””
Ryder paused.
“And against the people who helped them.””
Jack leaned forward.
“Names.””
Ryder nodded.
“Names.””
“Whose?””
“Everyone involved.””
Marcus frowned.
“Politicians?””
“Yes.””
“Police?””
“Yes.””
“Business owners?””
“Yes.””
Chloe looked disturbed.
“So Evan found proof that powerful people were corrupt.””
Ryder nodded.
“And that was when he became a target.””
Walter whispered:
“My son.””
Jack looked at the old photograph again.
Evan beside Ryder.
“You were close.””
Ryder nodded.
“He reminded me of Samuel.””
“Like a son?””
Ryder looked away.
“Something like that.””
Walter noticed.
“You cared about him.””
Ryder closed his eyes.
“Yes.””
“Then why?””
The question was simple.
But it carried everything.
Why?
Why betray someone you cared about?
Why let a father believe his son was dead?
Why become the villain in a story where you were supposed to be the protector?
Ryder answered quietly.
“Because I made a mistake.””
Nobody moved.
“What mistake?”” Jack asked.
Ryder looked at him.
“I trusted the wrong person.””
“Who?””
Ryder looked toward the dark window.
“The same person who betrayed Samuel.””
A pause.
“The same person who betrayed Evan.””
Jack stepped forward.
“Who?””
Ryder shook his head.
“I don’t know.””
Jack’s patience broke.
“You keep saying that.””
“Because it’s true.””
“You’re the founder of this club.””
“Yes.””
“You built a network.””
“Yes.””
“You spent decades looking.””
“Yes.””
“And you still don’t know?””
Ryder looked at him.
“Because the person who betrayed us wasn’t hiding.””
Jack frowned.
“What does that mean?””
Ryder answered:
“They were standing beside us the entire time.””
Nobody spoke.
Because everyone understood what that meant.
The betrayal wasn’t from an enemy.
It was from family.
Marcus looked at Jack.
“Someone in the club.””
Ryder nodded.
“Yes.””
Leo shook his head.
“No.””
“Yes.””
“That’s impossible.””
Ryder looked at him.
“I used to think so too.””
Tommy crossed his arms.
“Then why keep the club alive?””
Ryder looked at the patches on their jackets.
“Because Samuel’s dream wasn’t ruined by one person.””
A pause.
“It was stolen.””
Jack stared at him.
“And Evan?””
Ryder looked down.
“Evan discovered who the traitor was.””
Everyone froze.
Walter grabbed the edge of the table.
“Who?””
Ryder’s eyes moved toward him.
“I don’t know if I should tell you.””
Walter’s expression changed.
“You don’t get to decide that anymore.””
Ryder accepted the words.
Then he reached into his coat.
Everyone tensed.
But he only pulled out a small envelope.
Old.
Worn.
Folded many times.
He placed it on the table.
“This belonged to Evan.””
Walter stared.
“Why do you have it?””
Ryder looked at him.
“Because he gave it to me.””
The room went silent.
“He gave it to you?””
“Yes.””
“When?””
Ryder looked down.
“The last night I saw him.””
Walter’s breathing changed.
“You saw him?””
“Yes.””
“Alive?””
Ryder nodded.
“Yes.””
Walter stood.
“Where?””
Ryder hesitated.
Then:
“In this house.””
Nobody moved.
The words were impossible.
“In my house?””
“Yes.””
“Twenty-two years ago?””
“Yes.””
Walter shook his head.
“No.””
Ryder looked at him sadly.
“Yes.””
“You’re saying my son came here?””
“He did.””
“Why?””
Ryder looked at the old man.
“To say goodbye.””
Walter’s face collapsed.
“No.””
“He didn’t want you to suffer.””
“No.””
“He knew if he told you the truth—”
“No!””
Walter slammed his hand against the table.
The sound shocked everyone.
“I waited for him!””
His voice cracked.
“I waited every night!””
Tears filled his eyes.
“I thought he forgot me.””
Ryder looked devastated.
“He never did.””
“Then why didn’t he come inside?””
Ryder looked at the floor.
“Because someone was watching the house.””
Walter went silent.
“Who?””
Ryder didn’t answer.
Jack saw something in his face.
Fear.
For the first time, Ryder Cole looked afraid.
Not for himself.
For Walter.
“Ryder.””
The old biker slowly said:
“Because the person watching your house…”
He looked at the window.
“…was someone Evan trusted.””
A sudden sound came from outside.
A car door.
Everyone turned.
Jack immediately moved.
“Lights off.””
The garage went dark.
Only moonlight entered through the windows.
Walter whispered:
“Are they here?””
Ryder listened.
“No.””
Jack looked at him.
“How do you know?””
“Because if they were here…”
A pause.
“They wouldn’t announce themselves.””
Nobody liked that answer.
Marcus moved toward the side entrance.
Leo checked the windows.
Tommy stood beside Chloe.
Jack looked at Ryder.
“You’re sure nobody followed you?””
Ryder didn’t answer.
Jack’s eyes narrowed.
“You’re not sure.””
“No.””
“Who could have followed you?””
Ryder stared into the darkness.
“Everyone.””
Then the sound came again.
Not a car.
Something else.
A faint scratching.
Near the house.
Walter looked toward the ceiling.
“What was that?””
Nobody answered.
Then Chloe saw something through the garage window.
A shadow.
Moving.
She whispered:
“Someone’s outside.””
Jack turned.
“How many?””
She shook her head.
“I don’t know.””
Then Walter spoke.
Quietly.
Almost like he was remembering a dream.
“Not someone.””
Everyone looked at him.
Walter stared at the darkness.
“There were always two.””
Jack frowned.
“What?””
Walter touched his head.
A memory.
A terrible memory.
“When Evan came here.””
His voice shook.
“He wasn’t alone.””
Ryder turned sharply.
“What?””
Walter looked at him.
“There was another person with him.””
The old biker went pale.
“Who?””
Walter closed his eyes.
And then he remembered.
A face.
A voice.
A name.
The person Evan trusted.
The person who had come to his home that night.
The person who had been hiding in his memories all along.
Walter opened his eyes.
And whispered:
“It was your son.””
Nobody moved.
Jack stared.
“Your son?””
Ryder’s face changed completely.
Because everyone knew something about Ryder Cole.
Something that had never been spoken about.
Something the Iron Wolves believed was impossible.
Ryder had no children.
At least…
That was what they had always been told.
Walter looked at him.
“He said your son knew the truth.””
Ryder stepped back.
“No.””
Walter’s voice became stronger.
“He said your son was the only person who could prove you weren’t the traitor.””
Ryder looked terrified.
“My son died.””
A silence followed.
Then Walter said the words that destroyed everything Ryder believed.
“No.””
He looked toward the window.
“Your son didn’t die.””
Lightning flashed.
And for one second, the shadow outside became visible.
A man standing in the rain.
Watching the house.
Ryder stared.
Because even after all these years…
He recognized him.
And the impossible truth became real.
“My son…”
May you like
His voice broke.
“He’s alive.””
