Surprise

Chapter 3

The ballroom lights dimmed.

At first, I thought the wedding coordinator had made a mistake.

The officiant stopped speaking, and the orchestra fell silent. A few guests laughed nervously, assuming the sudden interruption was part of the ceremony.

Then the first photograph appeared on the screens.

It wasn't a picture of Daniel and me.

It was an email.

The subject line read: CANCELLATION OF BRIDAL GOWN.

A murmur traveled through the ballroom.

I watched my mother rise halfway from her chair.

"What is this?"

Her voice carried farther than she intended.

The next slide appeared.

It showed the confirmation that my original gown had been canceled three days earlier.

Then came the replacement order.

Then the authorization bearing Celeste's name.

The ballroom grew so quiet that I could hear the air-conditioning.

My mother stood completely.

"Turn that off!"

No one moved.

Lila rushed toward the control booth near the rear of the room, but a hotel technician stepped into her path.

I had spoken to the wedding coordinator before the ceremony. She had agreed to preserve the original presentation files and follow the instructions Daniel's best man would provide.

My mother had assumed the screens belonged to her.

She had never considered that someone else might control them.

The next slide showed a message from Celeste to the boutique.

"She always gets what she wants. Today, she will learn that the family comes first."

A woman in the second row covered her mouth.

Daniel released one of my hands and turned toward his mother-in-law.

"Nora," he whispered, "is that real?"

I nodded.

"I wish it weren't."

Celeste pushed through the front row.

"This is a private family matter!"

The words came out sharp and desperate.

I turned toward her.

"You made it public when you decided to humiliate me in front of three hundred people."

She stopped.

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then she pointed at the screen.

"Those messages are being taken out of context."

The next slide appeared.

It showed the refund confirmation.

The money from my canceled gown had not returned to the account used to purchase it.

It had been transferred elsewhere.

My mother stared at the screen.

Lila stopped moving.

I felt Daniel's fingers tighten around mine.

"Where did the money go?" he asked.

I looked at my mother.

"That's what I would like to know."

She shook her head.

"This is ridiculous."

But her voice had lost its authority.

The presentation continued.

There were photographs of the original gown from the boutique. There were screenshots of the cancellation request. There was a record showing that Celeste had ordered the replacement dress without my permission.

Every piece of evidence had a date.

Every message had a sender.

There was no room for the story my mother usually told when she wanted to escape responsibility.

Then the screen changed again.

A new email appeared.

It had been sent to Lila.

The message was short.

"Once she realizes the dress is gone, she'll panic. She always does. Don't let her leave the suite before the ceremony."

Lila made a strangled sound.

Several guests turned toward her.

My cousin shook her head violently.

"I didn't know she was going to show that!"

My mother spun around.

"Be quiet!"

The command was so vicious that even the officiant stepped back.

Lila's eyes filled with tears.

"You told me it was just a prank!"

I stared at her.

"A prank?"

She looked at me, then quickly looked away.

"You said she'd be upset for a few minutes. You said she'd put on the dress and laugh about it afterward."

My stomach twisted.

"So you knew."

Lila's mouth opened.

No words came out.

My mother reached for her arm, but Lila pulled away.

"I didn't know about the money," she said desperately. "I swear I didn't."

The ballroom erupted into whispers.

I felt the familiar urge to make everything easier for them.

To tell everyone that it was a misunderstanding.

To apologize for making a scene.

But Daniel's hand remained wrapped around mine, steady and warm.

For the first time in my life, I didn't feel responsible for rescuing my mother from the consequences of her own actions.

The presentation stopped.

The screen went dark for a moment before the final file appeared.

It was a recording.

I recognized my mother's voice immediately.

"You need to understand something, Lila. Nora has always believed she can make her own decisions. If I don't remind her who she is, she'll forget where she came from."

Lila's recorded voice answered.

"What if Daniel finds out?"

Celeste laughed.

"Daniel loves her. He'll marry her regardless. And afterward, she'll have no choice but to accept my help."

I felt Daniel go rigid beside me.

The recording continued.

"Besides," my mother said, "she owes me. I sacrificed everything for that girl."

I looked at her.

She was staring at the screen as if it had betrayed her.

But the recording wasn't lying.

It was simply telling the truth without asking her permission.

When the video ended, the ballroom remained silent.

Then Daniel stepped forward.

He faced the guests, still holding my hand.

"My wedding was supposed to be a celebration of love," he said. "Instead, someone decided to turn it into a lesson in obedience."

He looked at Celeste.

"That ends now."

My mother's face twisted.

"You have no idea what you're interfering with."

Daniel's expression hardened.

"I know exactly what I'm protecting."

He turned toward me.

"Nora, we can leave. Right now. We don't have to finish anything today."

His words broke something open inside me.

For eleven months, I had worried about the wedding.

The flowers.

The guests.

The photographs.

The family traditions.

But Daniel was offering me something far more important.

A choice.

I looked at the ballroom full of people waiting for me to make one.

Then I looked at my mother.

"No," I said softly. "I'm not leaving because she tried to humiliate me."

Celeste's lips parted.

May you like

I took a breath.

"I'm staying because I want to decide what happens next."
