Surprise

Chapter 7

I had never seen my father look so frightened.

Not when Denise struck me.

Not when he learned about the forged authorization.

Not even when Marcus told us that millions of dollars might be missing.

But when he saw the address Vanessa had written, his face lost all color.

"That car was supposed to have been destroyed," he whispered.

Marcus looked up.

"What car?"

My father rubbed his forehead.

"Arthur's Mercedes."

I stared at him.

"You said Grandpa died of a heart attack."

"That's what I was told."

"But he was in a car?"

My father nodded.

"He collapsed while being driven home from a family dinner."

Marcus stepped closer.

"Who was driving?"

My father hesitated.

"Charles."

Vanessa's father.

The man Denise had been married to when I was born.

I looked at Marcus.

"Could this be connected?"

"We don't know."

I hated those words.

We don't know.

They had followed me my entire life.

I didn't know why my mother left.

I didn't know why my father disappeared.

I didn't know why Vanessa was loved and I wasn't.

Now, finally, answers were appearing.

But every answer seemed to reveal another nightmare.

Marcus called the police.

We gave them Vanessa's note.

Her messages.

And the address.

An officer warned us not to go to the storage facility ourselves.

For once, I listened.

Not because I wasn't desperate to find my sister.

But because I understood that Denise had spent years controlling people who underestimated her.

I wasn't going to make that mistake.

Two hours later, the police located Vanessa.

She had been found sitting outside Unit 214.

Crying.

Her phone had been smashed.

But she was physically unharmed.

They brought her to a police station for questioning.

My father and I met her there.

The moment she saw me, Vanessa broke down.

"I'm sorry."

I stopped in the doorway.

She stood.

"Maya, I thought I could fix it."

I stared at her.

"By disappearing?"

"Mom said she'd ruin Dad's reputation if I didn't bring back the files."

"Our dad?" I asked.

Vanessa looked confused.

"Isaiah."

I froze.

My father stepped beside me.

"What does Denise think she has on me?"

Vanessa swallowed.

"She said there are documents proving you helped hide Maya."

My father stared at her.

"What?"

"She said you took money from Grandpa too."

He shook his head.

"That's a lie."

Vanessa nodded.

"I know that now."

I looked at her.

"What happened at the storage unit?"

Her hands trembled.

"Mom was supposed to meet me there. But she never came."

"Then why did you stay?"

"Because I found something."

She reached beneath the table.

An officer handed Marcus a sealed evidence inventory.

Vanessa pointed toward it.

"Inside the car, there was a small compartment beneath the passenger seat."

Marcus looked at her.

"What was in it?"

"A voice recorder."

My father went rigid.

"Did you listen?"

Vanessa nodded.

"Only a little."

I moved closer.

"What did it say?"

She began crying again.

"Grandpa was arguing with Charles."

I felt my heart pounding.

"About me?"

She nodded.

"He said he knew the death certificate was fake."

My father closed his eyes.

Vanessa continued.

"He said he was going to expose everything."

I swallowed.

"And then?"

"Charles told him he was destroying the family."

I waited.

Vanessa looked directly at my father.

"Then Grandpa said something about Mom."

"What?"

Her voice trembled.

"He said Denise had been stealing from the trust before it was even funded properly."

Marcus leaned forward.

"Did you hear anything indicating violence?"

Vanessa shook her head.

"No. Just an argument. Then Grandpa said he wasn't feeling well."

My father looked devastated.

Vanessa wiped her face.

"Charles told him to calm down. Then the recording stopped."

I felt a strange mixture of disappointment and relief.

For days, I had been imagining that my grandfather had been murdered.

But the recording didn't prove that.

It proved a different kind of betrayal.

The people closest to him had lied.

Stolen.

And hidden the existence of a child he wanted to protect.

Me.

Marcus looked toward the detective.

"Will the recording be examined?"

The detective nodded.

"We'll preserve it and investigate its authenticity."

I stared at the table.

My grandfather had tried to find me.

He had left me something.

He had fought for me when I was too young to know what was happening.

And he had died before I could meet him.

I began crying.

My father wrapped his arms around me.

"I'm sorry, baby."

I whispered against his chest,

"I just wanted someone to want me."

He held me tighter.

"I always wanted you."

Across the room, Vanessa began crying too.

For several moments, none of us spoke.

Then I turned toward her.

"Why did you really go to the storage unit?"

She looked at me.

I waited.

Finally, she whispered,

"Because I wanted to prove Mom was lying about Isaiah."

My chest tightened.

"Why?"

Vanessa looked at my father.

"Because when I was little, she told me Maya was dead. When I found out Maya was alive, she told me Maya hated me."

I stared at her.

"She told you that?"

Vanessa nodded.

"She said you'd always blamed me for everything."

My eyes filled.

"I thought you hated me."

"I know."

Vanessa covered her mouth.

"And I let you believe it."

I remembered every birthday I had watched from a distance.

Every photograph of Vanessa beside Denise.

Every vacation.

Every celebration.

My sister had received the childhood I wanted.

But now I saw something else.

Vanessa had lived in a beautiful house with a mother who controlled every part of her life.

I didn't excuse what she had done.

But I finally understood why she had been so afraid.

Marcus's phone rang.

He stepped into the hallway.

When he returned, his face was serious.

"Denise has been located."

My father straightened.

"Where?"

"At an airport."

My heart dropped.

"She's leaving?"

Marcus nodded.

"She attempted to board an international flight."

I gripped the table.

"Did they stop her?"

"Authorities are speaking with her."

I let out a shaky breath.

But Marcus wasn't finished.

"There's something else."

He looked toward Vanessa.

"Investigators have found another forged document in Denise's possession."

I felt cold.

"What document?"

"A letter supposedly written by Maya."

I stared.

"Saying what?"

Marcus looked at me.

"That you voluntarily renounced your inheritance and accused Isaiah of forcing you into this dispute."

My hands began trembling.

Denise wasn't simply trying to run.

She was trying to leave behind a lie that would destroy the two people she had already hurt most.

My father looked at Marcus.

"Can we stop it?"

Marcus closed his folder.

"Yes."

Then he looked at me.

"But Maya has to decide whether she's ready to testify against her own mother."

I looked at the people around me.

My father.

My sister.

The attorney who had helped uncover the truth.

And suddenly, I felt something I had never felt before.

Not fear.

Not shame.

Determination.

May you like

I straightened my shoulders.

"Tell me where I need to be."
