Surprise

Chapter 1

The day my stepmother shaved half my hair off, she thought my father would take her side.

She was wrong.

But what happened after he walked into that dressing room was even more frightening than the sound of the electric clippers.

Because my father discovered that the woman he married had been planning to humiliate me in front of hundreds of people.

And the reason had something to do with a secret she was desperate to keep hidden.

My name is Lily Carter.

I was seven years old.

I lived in a beautiful house outside Atlanta with my father, Marcus Carter, and my stepmother, Vanessa.

People always told me how lucky I was.

My father owned a successful construction company.

We had a big house, a swimming pool, and more bedrooms than we needed.

My dresses came from expensive stores.

My birthday parties had enormous cakes.

But none of those things mattered when I was alone with Vanessa.

Because Vanessa didn't like me.

She pretended she did when Dad was watching.

She called me her little princess.

She bought me presents.

She smiled in family photographs.

But whenever Dad left for work, her voice changed.

She told me I was spoiled.

She complained that I looked too much like my mother.

And she hated my hair.

My real mommy, Danielle, died when I was four.

I remembered her singing while she brushed my curls.

I remembered the smell of coconut oil.

And I remembered the tiny pink beads she used to place at the ends of my braids.

She always said my hair was beautiful because it belonged to me.

After she died, my aunt Nia helped care for it.

Aunt Nia was my father's older sister.

She was forty-eight, with warm brown eyes and auburn shoulder-length hair.

She never pulled my curls too tightly.

She never complained when I cried during detangling.

And she always let me choose my beads.

That Saturday, we were preparing for a special family celebration.

Dad's company was hosting a charity gala to support a children's arts program established in my mother's memory.

I was supposed to wear a lavender dress.

Aunt Nia had spent nearly two hours styling my hair.

She made small braids near my temples and left the rest of my long curls falling down my back.

Then she placed tiny pink beads throughout them.

I looked in the mirror and smiled.

"I look like Mommy."

Aunt Nia kissed my forehead.

"You sure do, sweetheart."

She stepped out to collect my shoes.

That was when Vanessa entered.

She wore a strapless burgundy dress.

Her platinum-blonde pixie haircut was perfectly styled.

She stood behind me and stared at my reflection.

"Why did Nia do your hair like that?"

I touched one of the beads.

"Because Mommy liked them."

Vanessa's expression hardened.

"We've discussed this."

I looked down.

"Discussed what?"

"You're too old to keep talking about your dead mother every five minutes."

My chest tightened.

I didn't answer.

Vanessa stepped closer.

"Take those beads out."

I shook my head.

"No, thank you."

Her eyes narrowed.

"What did you say?"

I swallowed.

"Aunt Nia said I could wear them."

Vanessa grabbed my shoulder.

"I'm not asking what Nia said."

I began trembling.

"Please don't be mad."

She looked toward the illuminated vanity mirror.

Then she opened a drawer.

Inside was a pair of electric hair clippers.

My stomach dropped.

"Vanessa?"

She plugged them in.

The buzzing sound filled the room.

I jumped from my chair.

"What are you doing?"

She grabbed a handful of my curls.

"Teaching you some respect."

I tried to pull away.

"Please!"

She tightened her grip.

"Stop moving!"

Then she ran the clippers through the hair above my left ear.

I heard a horrible scraping sound.

A thick section of curls fell onto the marble floor.

For a moment, I couldn't breathe.

Then I screamed.

"STOP!"

Vanessa pulled my head sideways.

"Hold still!"

More curls fell.

I raised both hands defensively.

"Please don't cut it!"

She ignored me.

Tears covered my cheeks.

I looked toward the mirror.

One side of my head was nearly shaved.

The other side still had long curls and pink beads.

I barely recognized myself.

"You're ruining everything!" I cried.

Vanessa laughed coldly.

"Maybe now you'll stop acting like your mother is still here."

That was when the door flew open.

"LILY!"

Aunt Nia rushed inside.

She saw the clippers.

Then the hair on the floor.

Her face changed completely.

"What are you DOING to her?"

She pushed Vanessa's clipping arm away.

Then pulled me behind her.

I buried my face against her emerald-green blouse.

"Aunt Nia!"

She held me tightly.

"It's okay, baby. I've got you."

Vanessa stepped backward.

"Don't interfere."

Aunt Nia stared at her.

"She's seven years old!"

Vanessa rolled her eyes.

"She needed discipline."

My aunt looked horrified.

"You call this discipline?"

Then heavy footsteps sounded outside.

Dad appeared in the doorway.

He wore a black suit.

He had been preparing for the gala.

When he saw me, he stopped.

His eyes moved from my face to my uneven hair.

Then to the thick curls scattered across the floor.

"Who did this to my daughter?"

Nobody answered.

Dad stepped closer.

"WHO?"

Vanessa lifted her chin.

"I did."

His face hardened.

"Why?"

She folded her arms.

"She needed discipline."

Dad stared at her.

For several seconds, he didn't move.

Then he stepped between us.

He took the clippers from Vanessa's hand.

"You thought cutting a child's hair was discipline?"

Vanessa looked away.

"Marcus, you're overreacting."

Dad switched the clippers on.

The buzzing sound returned.

He raised them near Vanessa's platinum hair without touching her.

She backed toward the vanity.

"Marcus!"

Her hands flew upward.

"Don't!"

Dad stared at her.

"Then maybe you should explain yourself before I decide what happens next."

I was shaking behind Aunt Nia.

Dad immediately lowered the clippers when he heard me cry.

He switched them off.

Then placed them on the far counter.

I had never seen him so angry.

But when he turned toward me, his expression softened.

Aunt Nia guided me toward the doorway.

I looked back at Vanessa.

Her face was pale.

Then I noticed something strange.

My tablet was still resting against the vanity mirror.

Its camera was pointed toward the room.

Earlier that morning, I had started recording a short video to show my friends my party dress.

I hadn't stopped it.

The tiny red recording light was still glowing.

I looked toward the camera.

My face was wet with tears.

My hair was ruined.

And my father was confronting Vanessa behind me.

I imagined telling everyone watching what had happened.

"Want to see what my dad is gonna do to them? Hit like and check out part two in the first comment."

Then Aunt Nia gently guided me away.

But before we reached the hallway, I heard Vanessa whisper something to Dad.

"You don't understand what that little girl was going to tell everyone tonight."

I stopped walking.

May you like

Because suddenly I remembered the folded paper I'd found in Vanessa's handbag that morning.

And the promise she'd forced me to make.
