Chapter 1

My husband brought his pregnant mistress into our living room and told me to accept that he was having a baby with another woman.
What he didn't know was that I had already received a medical report that made his announcement impossible.
And the moment his mistress saw that report, she stopped smiling.
My name is Nia Bennett.
I'm thirty-five years old, and until that afternoon, I had spent almost nine years believing my marriage was worth saving.
My husband, Marcus, sat on our cream sectional sofa wearing a fitted black shirt.
Beside him sat Vanessa.
She was thirty-two, with long black hair, expensive jewelry, and a cream maternity dress stretched across her noticeably pregnant stomach.
Marcus had one arm resting behind her.
His other hand hovered protectively near her belly.
I stood across from them wearing my mustard-yellow blouse, holding a folded medical report.
Neither of them seemed interested in what was in my hand.
Marcus looked straight at me.
"Vanessa is pregnant. The baby is mine."
For a moment, I heard nothing but the soft humming of our air conditioner.
Nine years of marriage.
Nine years of birthdays, anniversaries, and whispered promises.
Nine years of trying to build the family we both said we wanted.
And now my husband was sitting in our home with another woman, expecting me to celebrate his betrayal.
Vanessa tilted her head.
Then she smiled.
Not nervously.
Not apologetically.
She smiled like someone who had already won.
"I know this must be difficult for you," she said.
I looked at her.
"Does it?"
She touched her stomach.
"Marcus and I didn't plan for this to happen."
Marcus squeezed her shoulder.
"Don't apologize, baby."
Baby.
He called her baby.
The same word he'd whispered to me every morning for years.
I felt something break inside my chest.
But I didn't cry.
Not yet.
Instead, I looked at Marcus.
"You're saying this child is yours?"
He frowned.
"That's exactly what I said."
"You're certain?"
He gave a sharp laugh.
"Nia, don't embarrass yourself."
I stared at him.
"Answer me."
His face hardened.
"Yes. It's my child. Deal with it."
Vanessa leaned against him.
"We're going to be a family."
I almost laughed.
A family.
She was sitting in the living room I had designed.
On the sofa I had purchased.
Inside the house I had helped pay for.
And she was telling me she was going to have my family.
I looked toward our wedding photograph above the fireplace.
Marcus had been smiling so brightly that day.
He held my waist like he never intended to let go.
I remembered him whispering, "You and me forever."
Apparently, forever had an expiration date.
I took one step toward the coffee table.
Then I raised the folded papers in my hand.
"Marcus."
He sighed.
"What now?"
I held up the report.
"Before you make any more announcements, there's something you should read."
He barely glanced at it.
"Not interested."
I placed the papers firmly on the glass coffee table.
The sound made Vanessa flinch.
"Then explain this."
Marcus stared at the document.
"What is that?"
"A medical report."
He rolled his eyes.
"Nia, we're not doing this again."
I knew exactly what he meant.
For three years, we'd struggled to conceive.
Doctors' appointments.
Blood tests.
Fertility consultations.
Quiet drives home after receiving disappointing results.
And every time, Marcus had found a way to make me feel responsible.
He told me I worked too much.
That I was stressed.
That I needed to stop obsessing over pregnancy.
When our first specialist recommended testing both of us, Marcus refused.
"My family has never had that problem," he'd said.
Eventually, he agreed.
But afterward, he claimed the tests were inconclusive.
He told me not to worry.
I believed him.
Until I found the documents he'd hidden.
I slid the report toward him.
"Read it."
Marcus stared at me.
"Where did you get this?"
"From the records you finally authorized me to review last month."
His expression changed.
He picked up the report.
I watched his eyes move across the page.
Then stop.
His mouth opened slightly.
He read the first page again.
And suddenly, the arrogant man who had walked into my home with his pregnant mistress looked frightened.
"What is this?" he whispered.
I folded my arms.
"You know what it is."
Vanessa leaned closer.
"Marcus?"
He didn't answer.
I looked directly at him.
"Three specialists reviewed your results."
His hands began shaking.
"That doesn't mean—"
"The latest testing confirmed severe male-factor infertility."
Vanessa's smile disappeared.
I continued.
"The laboratory found no viable sperm in the samples examined."
Marcus stared at the report.
Then at me.
I could see the desperate calculations happening behind his eyes.
He wanted another explanation.
Another person to blame.
Another way to make the truth disappear.
"Those tests could be wrong," he said.
I nodded once.
"Medical tests can have limitations. That's why I insisted on independent reviews."
Vanessa straightened.
"What are you saying?"
I looked at her stomach.
"I'm saying Marcus needs more than your word before claiming this child is biologically his."
Her lips parted.
Marcus turned toward her.
"You told me the baby was mine."
Vanessa swallowed.
"It is."
"Then explain this."
She shook her head.
"I don't understand medical reports."
Marcus stood.
His face was red.
"Vanessa."
She pushed herself off the sofa.
"Don't talk to me like that."
He pointed toward the document.
"You said there was nobody else."
She stepped backward.
"There wasn't!"
I watched her carefully.
Her confidence had disappeared.
Her eyes kept moving toward the hallway.
And that was when I noticed something.
She wasn't looking at Marcus anymore.
She was looking past him.
Toward the open doorway leading to my husband's private office.
Marcus followed her gaze.
Then looked back at her.
"Who is the father?"
Vanessa clutched her stomach.
"Marcus, please."
"Answer me!"
His voice filled the room.
I stepped forward.
"Lower your voice."
He ignored me.
"WHO IS THE FATHER?"
Vanessa backed away from the coffee table.
Her face had gone completely pale.
Then I saw movement beyond the doorway.
A shadow stretched across the polished floor.
A man's shadow.
Someone was standing just outside the room.
Someone tall.
Someone who hadn't expected me to notice him.
Vanessa stared at the doorway like her life depended on whoever stood there.
I slowly turned my head.
Then looked back at her.
"You know him, don't you?"
She didn't answer.
But the expression on her face told me everything.
May you like
Whoever stood behind that door wasn't a stranger.
And suddenly, I understood that my husband's affair wasn't the only secret hiding inside my marriage.
