Surprise

Chapter 4

Ruiz pushed me behind a stack of boxes.

I shook my head.

She gave me one hard look.

Stay alive.

Then she stepped into the doorway.

“Brock.”

He stopped.

“What are you doing here?”

“Cleaning up your mess.”

His laugh was ugly.

“You always were good at that.”

I slid the flash drive into the lining of my boot.

My pulse beat so hard I was sure he could hear it.

Brock entered the office.

He carried my personnel file.

My real one.

Captain Mara Lee.

CID.

Sister of deceased Corporal Adam Lee.

So the leak was not small.

Someone had pulled sealed operational documents.

He tossed the file onto the desk.

“Your brother cried at the end.”

Every part of me went still.

Ruiz whispered, “Brock, don’t.”

He smiled toward the boxes.

“You hear me, Mara? Adam begged.”

I stepped out before Ruiz could stop me.

Brock’s smile widened.

“There she is.”

My voice was calm.

Too calm.

“What happened to my brother?”

He leaned against the desk.

“Training accident.”

“Say it again.”

“Training. Accident.”

“You recorded it.”

His eyes flicked to my boot.

Fast.

Enough.

He knew about the drive.

He lunged.

Ruiz tackled him from the side.

They crashed into the desk.

The file flew.

Brock shoved her off and came at me.

He was stronger.

Angrier.

Used to people freezing.

I did not freeze.

He swung.

I ducked.

He hit the metal cabinet behind me.

Pain flashed across his face.

I kicked his knee, turned, and drove him into the wall.

Not hard enough to end it.

Hard enough to move.

Ruiz grabbed the radio from his belt.

“Security breach, old gym!”

Static answered.

Then Colonel Vance’s voice came through.

“Stand down. No units to old gym.”

Ruiz and I stared at each other.

There it was.

Open.

Unhidden.

His father was protecting him in real time.

Brock laughed, breathing hard.

“You think cameras save people here?”

He reached into his pocket and pulled a knife.

Small.

Illegal on the mat.

Perfect for threats.

Ruiz stepped in front of me.

I grabbed a loose weight bar from the floor.

“Drop it,” I said.

He smiled.

“You won’t swing.”

“No?”

“You’re an investigator. Rules matter to you.”

“They do.”

I lifted the bar.

“So does not being stabbed.”

A loud crash came from the front entrance.

“Federal agents!” someone shouted.

Brock’s face changed.

Director Shaw appeared in the doorway with four armed agents behind her.

Her eyes swept the room.

Photos.

Files.

Knife.

Me.

Brock.

“Sergeant Vance,” she said, “drop the weapon.”

For one second, he looked like a child caught stealing.

Then he threw the knife down.

Ruiz sagged against the desk.

I pulled the flash drive from my boot and handed it to Shaw.

“Adam’s video may be on this.”

Shaw’s face softened.

Only for a moment.

Then she became stone again.

“Secure him.”

Agents cuffed Brock.

He stared at me while they led him out.

“You think this ends with me?”

“No,” I said. “I think it starts with you.”

By dawn, the old gym was sealed.

The evidence wall was photographed.

The locker was searched.

Carter was in the hospital with a broken tooth and bruised ribs, non-life-threatening, terrified to testify.

Colonel Vance was confined to quarters pending investigation.

But he still had friends.

At 0800, Shaw played the drive in a locked conference room.

I stood.

I would not sit for my brother’s last truth.

The video opened with Adam’s face.

Sweaty.

Scared.

Alive.

“If this gets found,” he whispered, “Brock Vance is forcing soldiers into punishment fights after hours. Colonel Vance knows. Staff Sergeant Lowell knows. I’m giving this to Captain Hayes tomorrow.”

The room went cold.

Captain Hayes.

The officer who had signed witness statements in Adam’s death report.

Adam turned the camera toward the old gym mat.

Brock stood there with Lowell.

So did Colonel Vance.

My brother’s voice shook.

“If I don’t make it home, tell Mara I tried.”

The recording jumped.

Shouting.

A fall.

My brother gasping.

Then Colonel Vance’s voice.

“Turn that damn thing off.”

The screen went black.

I did not cry.

Not there.

Not in front of them.

Shaw paused the video.

“We arrest Hayes now.”

Her phone rang before she finished.

She answered.

Listened.

May you like

Then looked at me.

“Hayes is gone.”
