Surprise

Chapter 7

We hit Haven Ridge before dawn.

FBI took lead.

State police sealed the road.

I rode in the second vehicle with Agent Vale, wearing a vest that felt too tight and a rage that felt too old.

Eli stayed at the secure facility.

He hated it.

He said his mother told him to find me, not wait for me.

I told him his mother also wanted him alive.

That ended the argument.

Barely.

The campus appeared through fog.

Brick buildings.

Dead playground.

New cameras.

High fence.

A place built for children, then redesigned to contain them.

The gate guard reached for his radio.

FBI tactical moved faster.

Within seconds, he was on the ground.

Inside the first building, we found files.

Hundreds.

Names.

Birthdates.

Photos.

Fake placements.

Children marked as runaway, foster transfer, international guardianship, juvenile diversion.

Some had been missing for years.

Some had no missing persons reports at all.

I felt sick.

Then we found the dormitory.

Fifteen children.

Ages seven to sixteen.

Alive.

Silent.

Too silent.

A little girl with shaved hair stared at us from a lower bunk.

A teenage boy stood in front of two smaller kids like a shield.

An agent whispered, “We’re here to help.”

The boy said, “That’s what the last ones said.”

I lowered my weapon.

Knelt.

“My name is Detective Mara Voss. I’m not asking you to trust me yet. I’m asking you to walk toward daylight.”

No one moved.

Then the girl with shaved hair asked, “Is Caroline here?”

My heart slammed.

“You know Caroline Mercer?”

The teenage boy looked toward the back door.

“She was in medical.”

Was.

Not is.

I rose.

“Where?”

He pointed.

Vale and I moved.

Fast.

The medical building smelled like bleach and locked air.

Two staff members surrendered.

One ran.

Vale caught him at the stairwell with an efficiency I admired in spite of the situation.

In the last room, we found a woman on a cot.

Thin.

Unconscious.

Dark hair streaked with gray.

A blue thread bracelet absent from her wrist.

Caroline Mercer was alive.

Barely.

I stood in the doorway and forgot how to breathe.

Vale called medics.

I moved to Caroline’s side.

Her pulse was weak.

Her lips cracked.

But when I said her name, her eyelids fluttered.

“Caroline.”

Her eyes opened.

Cloudy.

Searching.

“Eli?”

“He’s safe.”

Her whole face broke.

Not with tears.

With relief so deep it looked like pain.

“Mara?”

“Yes.”

“I’m sorry,” she whispered.

“For what?”

“Blue file. Your partner.”

My throat closed.

Not now.

Not here.

But she kept going.

“I sent it. They followed it. I didn’t know they’d kill him.”

I swallowed hard.

“Save your strength.”

She gripped my wrist with surprising force.

“Adrian has judges. Marshals. police. He’ll come for Eli.”

“Not if I get there first.”

Her eyes sharpened.

“Trust the children. They know exits adults don’t.”

Then she passed out.

At 6:42 a.m., Haven Ridge was secured.

Seventeen children recovered.

Caroline alive.

Slade in custody.

Harrison cooperating.

Adrian Mercer missing.

By 8:00, the news broke.

Not through Adrian this time.

Through Vale.

The FBI released enough truth to stop the spin.

Child trafficking investigation.

Westbridge remnants.

Political ties.

Recovered victims.

Protected minor witness.

Eli saw the coverage from the secure facility.

When I returned, he was standing in the hallway, stiff as wire.

“Is she alive?”

I nodded.

“Yes.”

He stared at me.

Then his face twisted.

“Don’t lie.”

“I’m not.”

“Where is she?”

“Hospital. Guarded. She’s weak, but alive.”

He covered his mouth.

His knees bent.

I caught him before he hit the floor.

“She came back,” he sobbed.

I held him.

“Yes.”

“She promised.”

“She tried very hard to keep it.”

He cried like a child this time.

Fully.

Messily.

Finally.

I cried too.

A little.

Enough.

Then Vale stepped into the hall.

“Mara.”

Her face killed the moment.

“What?”

“Adrian Mercer just filed an emergency family petition.”

“For Eli?”

“Yes.”

My arms tightened around him.

Vale’s voice turned grim.

“He’s claiming Caroline is mentally unstable, Eli was kidnapped into federal custody, and he is the child’s closest competent relative.”

Eli stopped crying.

May you like

His voice went flat again.

“He found us.”
