Surprise

Chapter 8

Tasha refused to believe it.

"My mother would never steal from me."

We were sitting in our kitchen again.

Apparently every disaster in our lives preferred granite countertops.

Darren sat across from us.

He had brought the letter.

Andre's handwriting was ugly but clear.

YOU THINK YOU KNOW WHO FED ME THE ACCOUNT INFO. ASK WHO NEEDED DARREN TO STAY DEPENDENT.

Tasha read it twice.

"This proves nothing."

Darren nodded.

"I know."

"Then why are you accusing my mother?"

"I'm not."

"You just told Marcus you think it's her."

"I said I think."

"Why?"

Darren rubbed his jaw.

"Because Denise always wanted me broke enough to need you."

Tasha laughed.

"That makes no sense."

"It does."

"No."

"Your mother hated me."

"Exactly."

I stepped in.

"Explain."

Darren looked at me.

"Denise wanted Tasha to leave me."

Tasha crossed her arms.

"Correct."

"After she did, I thought Denise would be happy."

"So?"

"She wasn't."

Darren looked at Tasha.

"She kept calling me."

Tasha froze.

"What?"

"For years."

"Why?"

"To check on Jordan."

"That's not weird."

"No."

He shook his head.

"But she also sent me money."

Silence.

I stared at him.

"How much?"

"Not much."

Tasha's face changed.

"When?"

"After you married Marcus."

She stood.

"You're lying."

"I'm not."

"Why would my mother give you money?"

Darren looked ashamed.

"She said if I stayed stable, I wouldn't cause trouble."

I felt cold.

"Meaning?"

"She didn't want me trying to get Tasha back."

Tasha stared.

"What?"

Darren continued.

"Denise thought if I got desperate, I'd interfere in your marriage."

"So she paid you?"

"Sometimes."

"With my money?"

"I don't know."

Tasha grabbed her phone.

Called her mother.

No answer.

Again.

Voicemail.

Her hands shook.

"This is ridiculous."

I remained quiet.

She looked at me.

"Say something."

"What do you want me to say?"

"That this is crazy."

"It is."

"That my mother didn't steal from me."

"I don't know."

Her face twisted.

That hurt her.

But I wasn't lying anymore to make people comfortable.

Police investigated.

Three days later, Detective Palmer asked us to come in.

Denise was there.

Tasha's mother.

Sixty-one.

Always perfectly dressed.

Always strong opinions.

She hugged Jordan every birthday and criticized my cooking at every holiday.

She looked small in the interview room.

Tasha stared.

"Mom?"

Denise began crying immediately.

That answered enough.

"What did you do?"

"Tasha."

"What did you do?"

Denise looked at me.

"I'm sorry."

Tasha slapped her hand on the table.

"Don't look at Marcus!"

Denise flinched.

"Look at me."

Then the truth came out.

Years earlier, Denise had access to Tasha's financial accounts because she helped her during the breakup from Darren.

She knew the login.

She knew Tasha often reused passwords.

After Tasha married me, Denise became afraid Darren would become unstable.

She started sending him small amounts from Tasha's inheritance.

"Why?" Tasha whispered.

"To keep him away."

"From what?"

"From your marriage."

I stared.

Denise cried.

"He was angry when you married Marcus."

Tasha shook.

"So you paid him?"

"I thought if he had enough for rent and food, he would leave you alone."

Darren looked sick.

"I didn't know it was her money."

Denise looked at him.

"Sometimes you did."

He went quiet.

Tasha noticed.

"What does that mean?"

Darren closed his eyes.

"Your mom told me once."

"When?"

"Maybe two years ago."

"And you kept taking it."

His face collapsed.

"Yes."

Tasha laughed through tears.

"So everyone was using my money to control everyone else."

Nobody could argue.

Her mother paying Darren to stay away.

Tasha paying Darren to preserve Jordan's image of him.

Me paying household bills to avoid conflict.

Darren avoiding responsibility because he assumed I would handle it.

An entire family built around money doing the work conversations should have done.

Tasha looked at Denise.

"Why didn't you tell me he was threatening you?"

"He wasn't exactly."

"Then what?"

"He'd call."

"That isn't a threat."

"He'd be angry."

"Mom."

Denise cried harder.

"I was afraid you'd go back."

Tasha stared.

"After I married Marcus?"

"I knew you still felt guilty."

"So you manipulated him."

"I protected you."

There it was.

That word again.

Tasha stood.

"No."

Her voice shook.

"You controlled me."

Denise covered her face.

"I was trying to keep you safe."

"By stealing?"

"I planned to replace it."

"With what?"

No answer.

Tasha laughed bitterly.

"How much total?"

Detective Palmer answered.

"Approximately nine thousand dollars."

Tasha looked physically ill.

Nine thousand.

Add that to the forgotten automatic payments.

Her inheritance had been quietly drained from multiple directions for years.

She looked at Darren.

"And you knew part of it."

He nodded.

"I'm sorry."

"Don't."

Then she looked at her mother.

"Get out."

Denise stared.

"Tasha."

"Not forever."

That surprised all of us.

"But right now, I can't look at you."

Denise stood slowly.

"You'll understand when you're older."

That was the wrong thing to say.

Tasha's expression hardened.

"No."

She stepped closer.

"I understand exactly."

Her voice shook.

"You were so afraid of my choices that you made them for me."

Denise cried.

"That's not love."

That hit me.

Because Tasha wasn't just talking to her mother.

She was talking about herself too.

What she had done with Jordan.

Rewriting his father's failures.

Managing his emotions.

Deciding what truth he could survive.

Denise left.

Tasha sat back down.

Then cried for almost ten minutes.

I held her.

Darren stayed quiet.

Eventually she looked at him.

"You knew."

He nodded.

"Part of it."

"And still took the money."

"Yes."

"Why?"

"Because I was selfish."

No excuse.

No gambling story.

No blame.

Just selfish.

That mattered.

Tasha wiped her face.

"I'm not forgiving you today."

"I know."

"But you keep paying support."

"I will."

"And don't ask me for anything."

"I won't."

She looked at me.

"Can we go home?"

"Yeah."

At home, Jordan asked what happened.

Tasha told him Grandma Denise had made bad financial decisions involving the family.

Nothing more.

He asked:

"Did Grandma steal?"

Tasha paused.

Then:

"Yes."

Truth.

Simple.

No drama.

No character assassination.

Jordan looked sad.

"Is she going to jail?"

"Probably not."

Detective Palmer believed restitution and civil resolution were more likely because Tasha didn't want criminal charges pursued, though Andre's separate fraud remained criminal.

Jordan nodded.

"Are we still seeing her?"

"Not right now."

"Forever?"

"I don't know."

He accepted that.

Our family was finally learning that "I don't know" was better than a comforting lie.

Months passed.

Denise entered therapy.

She repaid part of the money using savings.

Then she sold a piece of jewelry to repay more.

Tasha cried when she received the check.

Not because of the amount.

Because her mother had finally stopped saying intention mattered more than impact.

Darren continued working.

Andre eventually accepted a plea deal involving fraud and weapons charges.

The bank recovered most of our stolen savings.

Slowly, the financial crisis ended.

But the emotional one was harder.

One evening, Jordan found Tasha crying.

He sat beside her.

"Is it Grandma?"

"Partly."

He thought.

"Do you still love her?"

"Yes."

"But you're mad."

"Very."

He nodded.

"Like me and Dad."

Tasha looked at him.

"Yeah."

"Can you love someone and not trust them?"

She started crying harder.

"Yes."

Jordan looked toward me.

"That's messed up."

I laughed.

"Welcome to adulthood."

He rolled his eyes.

Then Tasha looked at him.

"Jordan."

"What?"

"I'm sorry."

"For Grandma?"

"No."

She shook her head.

"For treating you like you couldn't handle disappointment."

He stared.

"I should have let your dad be responsible for your relationship with him."

Jordan listened.

"I shouldn't have made excuses."

"Okay."

"I thought protecting you meant making everything hurt less."

He looked at her.

"Sometimes it hurt more because I found out later."

Tasha closed her eyes.

"I know."

Then Jordan hugged her.

"I still love you."

She held him tightly.

"Thank you."

He added:

"But don't fake birthday money again."

She laughed through tears.

"Never."

I watched them.

Then my phone buzzed.

A message from Darren.

Need to talk. About Jordan.

My stomach tightened.

I showed Tasha.

She looked worried.

"Call him."

I did.

Darren answered immediately.

"Marcus."

"What's going on?"

He sounded strange.

"I got the results."

"What results?"

Silence.

Then:

"The paternity test."

My entire body went still.

Tasha saw my face.

"What?"

I put the phone on speaker.

Darren continued:

"Jordan isn't biologically mine."

Tasha's face went completely white.

May you like

And from the hallway behind us, Jordan whispered:

"What did he just say?"
