Surprise

Chapter 5

Rebecca was not arrested that afternoon.

Not immediately.

That angered me so much I could barely speak.

Officer Ramirez explained that forgery and attempted custodial interference required review by detectives and the district attorney.

“She is not free to take your daughter,” he said. “And you can file for an emergency protective order today.”

“I want that.”

“Then do it now.”

I did.

My wedding day became a courthouse day.

I walked into the family court building still wearing my suit.

Emily still wore her white dress.

The hem was dirty from the chapel grass.

Claire stayed beside us.

My father followed behind, quiet and pale.

He had tried to speak to me in the parking lot.

I had said, “Not yet.”

He had nodded.

For once, he did not push.

The judge reviewed the note.

The forged forms.

The travel itinerary.

The statements.

Within two hours, I had a temporary protective order against Rebecca.

No contact with Emily.

No contact with me.

No coming to my house.

No school pickup.

No third-party messages.

The judge also ordered Rebecca to surrender any documents related to Emily.

As we left, Emily looked up at me.

“Can she still come to my school?”

“No.”

“What if she wears a hat?”

Claire made a soft sound like she was trying not to cry.

I knelt in the courthouse hallway.

“Then the school will call me and the police. But she is not taking you. Not in a hat. Not in a car. Not in a plane. Not ever.”

Emily nodded slowly.

“Okay.”

But her hand stayed locked in mine.

That night, we went home.

Not to the reception hall.

Not to the hotel suite Rebecca had booked.

Home.

The house looked different when I opened the door.

Rebecca’s flowers were on the entry table.

Rebecca’s framed engagement photo sat on the mantel.

Rebecca’s sweater hung over a chair.

Her presence was everywhere.

Emily stopped in the doorway.

“Do I have to sleep here?”

The question broke me.

“No.”

We packed bags and went to Claire’s.

My sister made grilled cheese at midnight.

Emily ate half of one and fell asleep on the couch with her head on my lap.

Claire sat across from me.

“You need to know something.”

I looked up.

“What?”

“I never liked Rebecca.”

Despite everything, I almost laughed.

“You picked the wedding cake with her.”

“I can be polite and suspicious at the same time.”

I rubbed my face.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“I did. You said she was trying.”

I closed my eyes.

She was right.

People had warned me in soft ways.

Rebecca corrected Emily too much.

Rebecca got quiet whenever Sarah was mentioned.

Rebecca did not like family traditions that existed before her.

I had explained everything away.

I wanted love to be simple again.

I wanted Emily to have a mother figure.

I wanted grief to end.

Instead, I had brought a threat to my daughter’s doorstep.

Claire leaned forward.

“Daniel, blaming yourself will not help Emily.”

“I almost married her.”

“But you didn’t.”

“She got close enough to hand my child a goodbye note.”

Claire’s eyes filled.

“Yes. And Emily trusted you enough to bring it to you.”

I looked down at my daughter.

Her eyelashes were still wet.

“She asked if I agreed.”

Claire whispered, “Then spend the rest of your life making sure she never has to ask again.”

I nodded.

That became my promise.

The next morning, I went home with Claire and my father.

We packed every trace of Rebecca into boxes.

My father lifted the engagement photo from the mantel.

His hand shook.

“I failed you,” he said.

I kept folding Rebecca’s sweater.

“You should have asked me.”

“I know.”

“She used you.”

“I know.”

I looked at him then.

“Did you want me to send Emily away?”

His eyes widened with pain.

“No. God, no. I thought it was counseling. I thought it would help both of you.”

“You believed her over me.”

He lowered his head.

“I believed the version that made me feel useful.”

That honesty slowed my anger.

It did not erase it.

But it gave us somewhere to stand.

“Emily decides when she is ready to see you,” I said.

May you like

He nodded.

“I will wait.”
