Surprise

Chapter 8 - The Day the Judge Heard My Voice

I had never been inside a courtroom before.

Everything looked serious.

The wooden benches.

The judge's desk.

The quiet voices.

The lawyers carrying thick folders.

I sat beside Dad, gripping my mother's necklace.

Thomas had explained what would happen.

Vanessa wanted temporary authority over my property.

She claimed Dad was making irresponsible decisions.

She also claimed I was too emotionally dependent on him to understand my own interests.

When I heard that, I almost laughed.

For three years, Vanessa had treated me like a servant.

Now she wanted to convince a judge she was protecting me.

Across the courtroom, Vanessa sat beside Daniel Brooks.

She wore a dark blue suit.

Her eyes looked red.

She had clearly prepared herself to appear devastated.

Jordan and Nia sat behind her.

Jordan stared at the floor.

Nia looked frightened.

The hearing began.

Vanessa's attorney spoke first.

He described Dad as financially unstable.

He mentioned the canceled Hawaii vacation.

He suggested Dad had acted impulsively and emotionally.

Then Vanessa testified.

She cried.

She wiped her eyes.

She spoke softly.

"I've always loved Maya as my own."

My stomach twisted.

She continued.

"Unfortunately, she's struggled with jealousy toward my children."

I stared at her.

"That's why I arranged a separate vacation. I thought giving her space would help."

I wanted to scream.

She was rewriting everything.

Again.

Then she said something that made me feel physically sick.

"Marcus has encouraged Maya to believe she's being mistreated."

I looked at Dad.

His jaw was tight.

Thomas touched his arm.

"Stay calm."

Vanessa continued.

"I only want what's best for her."

The judge listened without interrupting.

Then Thomas stood.

He presented the banking records.

He explained the withdrawals.

He showed the disputed transactions.

He provided the documents establishing my mother's trust.

Vanessa's attorney argued that some expenses had been legitimate household costs.

Thomas acknowledged that the court would need a full accounting to determine which withdrawals were improper.

Then he presented the Honolulu booking records.

The family vacation Vanessa arranged.

Three tickets.

Her name.

Jordan's name.

Nia's name.

No Maya.

Thomas asked Vanessa a question.

"Why wasn't Maya included?"

Vanessa smiled sadly.

"She didn't want to go."

My hands tightened.

Thomas turned toward me.

"Did Maya ever tell you that?"

Vanessa hesitated.

"Not directly."

Thomas waited.

She continued.

"But I knew she was uncomfortable with traveling."

Thomas presented the second reservation.

Two first-class tickets.

Marcus Bennett.

Maya Bennett.

Booked six weeks earlier.

Vanessa's expression changed.

Thomas looked at her.

"Did you know Marcus had arranged this trip for his daughter?"

She shook her head.

"No."

Thomas placed an account-access record before the court.

"Then can you explain why the confirmation was opened from your registered email account?"

Silence.

Vanessa stared at the page.

Her attorney objected to the implication.

The judge reviewed the evidence.

Then asked Vanessa to answer.

She swallowed.

"I don't remember."

For the first time, her voice sounded uncertain.

Thomas continued.

"Did you use funds from Maya's custodial account to purchase your vacation package?"

Vanessa looked toward Brooks.

He stared straight ahead.

"I believed the money was available for family expenses."

Thomas nodded.

"Yet Maya was excluded from the trip."

Vanessa said nothing.

Then Thomas called another witness.

Nia.

I turned sharply.

My stepsister stood slowly.

Her hands were shaking.

I had no idea she would testify.

She walked to the witness chair.

The judge spoke kindly to her.

Nia nodded.

Then Thomas asked what Vanessa had told her about the vacation.

Nia swallowed.

"Mom said Maya didn't want to come."

Thomas nodded.

"And did you later learn that wasn't true?"

Nia began crying.

"Yes."

Vanessa looked horrified.

Nia continued.

"Mom told me not to ask Maya about it."

My heart tightened.

Thomas asked whether she had heard anything unusual concerning the property.

Nia nodded.

"I heard Mom talking on the phone."

Her voice shook.

"She said once Marcus and Maya left for Hawaii, she would have time to finish something."

Vanessa shook her head violently.

"She's confused!"

The judge instructed her to remain quiet.

Nia wiped her face.

"She said the hearing would happen while they were gone."

The courtroom went silent.

I stared at her.

Nia looked toward me.

"I'm sorry, Maya."

I started crying.

Not because I felt hurt.

Because someone had finally told the truth.

Then Thomas called me.

My legs trembled as I approached the witness chair.

I sat down.

Took the oath.

And looked at the judge.

"Maya," she said gently, "I understand this has been difficult."

I nodded.

"Tell me what happened."

For a moment, I couldn't speak.

I thought about the laundry basket.

The plane tickets.

Vanessa's laughter.

Three years of feeling unwanted.

Then I took a breath.

"My stepmother made me feel like I didn't belong in my own house."

My voice shook.

"She bought things for her children and told me we couldn't afford anything."

I wiped my eyes.

"She made me do their laundry. She sometimes kept me from eating dinner with everyone else."

The judge listened carefully.

I continued.

"And when I tried telling Dad, she said I was jealous."

My father lowered his head.

I looked toward him.

"He should have listened."

My voice broke.

"But he finally did."

I turned back toward the judge.

"I don't know everything about money or property."

I swallowed.

"But I know my mother left those things for me."

Tears slid down my cheeks.

"She wanted me to be safe."

I touched the necklace around my neck.

"And I don't want anyone taking her love away from me again."

The courtroom was completely silent.

When I finished, Thomas thanked me.

I returned to my seat.

Dad reached for my hand.

I let him hold it.

After reviewing the evidence and hearing both sides, the judge denied Vanessa's request for temporary control.

She ordered preservation of the relevant financial records.

She also directed that the existing trust protections remain in place while the disputed transactions were investigated.

Thomas exhaled.

Dad closed his eyes.

I began crying.

For the first time, they were tears of relief.

Vanessa stared ahead.

Her face was pale.

Brooks whispered something to her.

She shook her head.

The judge then addressed the evidence concerning the account.

She explained that the allegations of improper withdrawals required further investigation.

Thomas confirmed that referrals had already been made.

The judge nodded.

Then the hearing ended.

Outside the courtroom, Dad hugged me.

"You were incredible."

I shook my head.

"I was terrified."

He smiled through tears.

"That's what courage looks like sometimes."

Nia approached us.

She looked nervous.

"Can I talk to Maya?"

Dad looked at me.

I nodded.

She stepped closer.

"I'm sorry I laughed about Hawaii."

I swallowed.

She continued.

"I should have asked you what you wanted."

I looked at her.

"Yes. You should have."

Tears filled her eyes.

"I know."

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then I hugged her.

She began crying harder.

But our moment was interrupted.

Thomas hurried toward us.

"Marcus."

Dad turned.

"What is it?"

Thomas looked unusually serious.

"The investigators found something in Brooks's records."

My heart raced.

"What?"

Thomas lowered his voice.

"Evidence that Vanessa wasn't acting alone."

Dad frowned.

"We knew Brooks was involved."

Thomas shook his head.

"Not him."

I felt a chill.

"Then who?"

Thomas looked at Dad.

May you like

"Someone inside your company."

And suddenly, our fight wasn't just about my inheritance anymore.
