Chapter 5

Counseling was brutal.

Because truth felt awkward when spoken under fluorescent lights.
Dad went first.
Then me.
Then Leo.
Then Monica, separately.
The counselor, Dr. Patel, told Dad that locks were rarely about doors.

Monica said she did not mean to make me feel homeless.
Dr. Patel asked, âWhat did you intend?â
Monica cried.
Then said, âI wanted control.â
The room went very still.
She looked at Dad.
âI wanted to know this house could become mine.â
I looked at her.
âIt was never going to be yours by making it less mine.â
She nodded, crying harder.
âI know that now.â
I did not forgive her.
