Surprise

Chapter 2

I sat in my truck for twenty minutes after leaving Vanessa’s apartment.

Noah’s empty booster seat was behind me.

His dinosaur backpack sat on the passenger seat.

The aquarium tickets were still tucked into the sun visor.

I could still hear him crying.

Daddy.

That word kept hitting me.

I wanted to go back.

I wanted to pound on the door until someone listened.

But I knew what would happen.

Bryce would call the police.

Vanessa would say I was aggressive.

The neighbors would say they heard shouting.

And I would become the angry father she wanted the world to see.

So I gripped the steering wheel until my hands hurt and called my sister, Mia.

She answered on the first ring.

“Did you get him?”

I could not speak.

“Ethan?”

“She wouldn’t let me.”

Mia went quiet.

Then her voice changed.

“What happened?”

I told her everything.

The door.

The money.

Noah crying.

Bryce threatening me from inside.

Mia cursed under her breath.

“You recorded it?”

“Yes.”

“Good. Come here.”

“I don’t want to talk.”

“I didn’t ask if you wanted to talk. I said come here.”

That was Mia.

She had raised me after our mom died and our dad disappeared into beer and silence.

She was only four years older than me, but she had always sounded like the adult in the room.

When I got to her house, she was waiting on the porch.

She hugged me before I could pretend I was fine.

I broke.

Not loudly.

Not dramatically.

Just enough that my knees almost gave out.

Mia held me.

“She is not taking him from you,” she said.

“She already is.”

“No. She is trying. That’s different.”

Inside, her husband Daniel put coffee in front of me and said nothing.

He was good that way.

Mia sat across from me with a notebook.

“Start from the beginning.”

“Mia, I’m tired.”

“Good. Tired people tell the truth faster.”

So I talked.

I told her how Vanessa canceled my last three visits.

How she demanded $1,500 for “expenses” but refused to send receipts.

How she said Noah needed daycare money even though her mother watched him.

How Bryce posted pictures from a casino the same weekend Vanessa said she could not afford groceries.

Mia wrote everything down.

Then she held out her hand.

“Phone.”

I gave it to her.

She watched the video from the hallway.

Her face did not move.

That scared me.

When it ended, she replayed it.

Then again.

Finally, she said, “You need court.”

“I have an order.”

“You need enforcement.”

“I can’t afford a long fight.”

“You can’t afford not to fight.”

Daniel leaned forward.

“I know a family attorney. She helped my cousin. She doesn’t scare easy.”

The next morning, I sat in attorney Claire Jensen’s office wearing work boots and shame.

Claire was in her fifties, with silver hair and eyes that looked like they could cut rope.

She watched the video without blinking.

When Noah cried, she paused it.

“Is that your son?”

“Yes.”

“How old?”

“Five.”

“Any history of abuse allegations against you?”

“No.”

“Police reports?”

“No.”

“Missed support?”

“Never.”

“Missed visits?”

“Only when she blocks them.”

Claire nodded.

“She is violating the custody order.”

My throat tightened.

“So what happens?”

“We file a motion for enforcement and contempt. We ask for make-up parenting time. We ask the judge to order communication through a monitored parenting app.”

I nodded fast.

“And if she keeps doing it?”

Claire looked at me.

“Then we ask for custody modification.”

The words hit me hard.

Custody modification.

I had never tried to take Noah from his mother.

Even after everything.

A part of me still believed a child needed both parents.

Claire saw my face.

“Mr. Brooks, protecting your son’s relationship with you is not taking him from her.”

I looked down.

“She’ll say it is.”

“She will say many things.”

I swallowed.

“What if the judge believes her?”

Claire leaned forward.

“Then we bring proof.”

For the first time in months, I felt something besides helplessness.

Proof.

I had proof.

Messages.

Receipts.

Recordings.

Canceled weekends.

Noah’s voice.

That afternoon, Vanessa texted me.

Send $1500 by tonight or don’t ask for Noah again.

My hands shook as I read it.

Then another message came.

Bryce says real fathers pay without crying to lawyers.

I stared at the screen.

She knew.

Someone had told her.

Before I could answer, a photo appeared.

Noah asleep on the couch.

His cheeks were red from crying.

Under it, Vanessa wrote:

He got over you fast.

I nearly threw the phone.

Instead, I sent the screenshot to Claire.

Her reply came one minute later.

Do not respond. Save everything.

So I saved it.

Every cruel word.

Every threat.

Every lie.

May you like

And with each screenshot, I stopped feeling like a man begging at a locked door.

I started feeling like a father building a case.
