Surprise

Chapter 9

I was so excited about seeing Noah that I barely slept.

I chose my clothes three times.

First, a pink dress.

Then jeans and a purple shirt.

Finally, I picked my favorite lavender sweater.

Daddy laughed when he saw the clothes spread across my bed.

"Princess, you're only visiting for an hour."

I smiled.

"I know."

He raised an eyebrow.

"Then why does it look like you're packing for vacation?"

I giggled.

"Because Noah might remember me!"

Daddy's expression softened.

He didn't tell me Noah was too young.

He simply smiled.

"Then let's make sure you're comfortable."

The visit took place at a family center.

Aunt Renee came with us.

Vanessa was already there with Noah.

Claire arrived a few minutes later.

I felt nervous when I saw her.

My stomach tightened.

I remembered her grabbing my wrist.

The way she shouted.

The way she said Noah wasn't my real brother.

Daddy noticed immediately.

He knelt beside me.

"Are you okay?"

I nodded slowly.

"Kind of."

He took my hand.

"You don't have to speak to Claire if you're uncomfortable."

I looked up.

"Really?"

He nodded.

"Really."

I felt a little better.

Vanessa smiled when she saw me.

"Hi, Maya."

I smiled back.

"Hi."

She looked toward Noah.

"Someone's gotten bigger."

I gasped.

He really had.

His cheeks were rounder.

His little hands moved constantly.

And when Vanessa gently held him facing me, he made a soft happy sound.

I started crying.

"Hi, Noah."

Vanessa smiled.

"Would you like to sit beside me?"

I nodded quickly.

Daddy helped me settle into a chair.

Vanessa carefully transferred Noah into my arms with support, making sure his head and neck were secure.

I held him close.

My heart felt full.

"Hi, baby."

He looked at me.

Then blinked.

I laughed through tears.

"Remember me?"

Of course he didn't answer.

But he made another tiny sound.

And that was enough.

For a few beautiful minutes, I forgot about the court.

The trust.

The lies.

I just held Noah.

Then I noticed Claire watching us.

Her eyes were filled with tears.

I looked away.

I didn't know what to say.

After a while, Vanessa gently took Noah back.

I wiped my face.

"Thank you."

She smiled.

"You're welcome."

Claire stepped closer.

"Maya."

My stomach tightened.

Daddy immediately moved beside me.

Claire stopped.

For several seconds, she looked at me.

Then whispered, "I'm sorry."

I stared.

She continued.

"For hurting your wrist. For saying those things. For making you feel unwanted."

My eyes filled.

I didn't answer.

I wasn't sure I could.

Claire swallowed.

"You didn't deserve that."

I looked toward Daddy.

He nodded gently.

I took a breath.

"Why did you say Noah wasn't my brother?"

Claire looked down.

"Because I was afraid of what your father would discover."

I frowned.

"That's not a reason to be mean."

Her eyes filled.

"You're right."

I swallowed.

Then whispered, "I loved him."

Claire began crying.

"I know."

I looked at her.

"And I wanted you to like me too."

Her face crumpled.

For a moment, she couldn't speak.

Then she said quietly, "I failed you, Maya."

I nodded.

That was true.

She had.

I didn't hug her.

I didn't tell her everything was okay.

Because it wasn't.

But I appreciated that she'd finally admitted it.

After the visit, Daddy and I walked toward the car.

He held my hand.

"How do you feel?"

I thought carefully.

"Happy."

He smiled.

"Good."

Then I added, "And sad."

His expression softened.

"That makes sense."

I looked back toward the building.

"Can we see Noah again?"

Daddy took a breath.

"We'll see what arrangements everyone can agree to safely."

I nodded.

I didn't like waiting.

But I understood.

Over the following months, our life became calmer.

Daddy finished the divorce.

The legal issues involving the trust were resolved through the appropriate proceedings.

The protected assets remained secure.

Uncle Daniel faced consequences for his financial misconduct.

Claire continued complying with her legal obligations and parenting arrangements.

Vanessa remained a steady support for Noah.

And Daddy made sure I didn't have to hear every argument.

He started coming home earlier.

We cooked dinner together.

Watched movies.

Visited Aunt Renee.

And went to the park on weekends.

Sometimes I still worried.

Sometimes I dreamed about the hospital.

Sometimes I wondered whether another adult would lie to us.

But Daddy kept showing me that our home was safe.

He listened.

He explained things carefully.

And he never made me feel guilty for asking questions.

One evening, we sat together looking through old photographs.

I found a picture of Mommy holding me when I was a baby.

I stared at it.

"Daddy?"

"Yes?"

"Did Mommy ever lie to you?"

He looked surprised.

Then smiled sadly.

"Your mother wasn't perfect."

I nodded.

"But she loved us honestly."

I thought about that.

Then smiled.

"I want to be like her."

Daddy pulled me close.

"You already have her kind heart."

My eyes filled.

Then I asked something important.

"Do you think families have to look a certain way?"

He shook his head.

"No, princess."

I looked toward the photograph.

"Because ours looks different now."

He nodded.

"It does."

I swallowed.

"Is that okay?"

Daddy kissed my forehead.

"More than okay."

He smiled.

"Love is what makes a family worth having."

I leaned against him.

For the first time, I believed our story could still have a happy ending.

Not the one I'd imagined when Noah was born.

But one filled with truth.

Safety.

And people who chose to care for each other.

Then Daddy's phone vibrated.

A message from Vanessa.

It was a photograph of Noah.

He was smiling.

A real baby smile.

Beside him sat the yellow teddy bear I'd given him.

Underneath, Vanessa had written:

Someone loves his bear.

I laughed.

Then showed Daddy.

May you like

His eyes filled.

And for the first time, we smiled at Noah's photograph without feeling only sadness.
