Surprise

Chapter 1 - THE LITTLE GIRL BEHIND THE GLASS

The rain was coming down harder than Nia had ever seen.

She stood barefoot on the back porch, her oversized white T-shirt completely soaked, her dark hair stuck to her cheeks. Her hands trembled as she knocked desperately on the locked glass patio door.

Inside, the house was warm.

Vanessa sat comfortably on the cream-colored sofa with Caleb and Ava. All three had plates of hot food.

Nia hadn’t eaten since lunch.

She pressed her face against the glass, hoping Vanessa would finally let her inside.

Instead, Vanessa slowly stood, walked toward the patio door, and opened it just enough to throw a piece of bread onto the wet porch.

“There’s your dinner. Eat it out there.”

Nia stared at the bread as rainwater soaked through it.

“Please… I’m freezing.”

Vanessa looked at her without sympathy.

“Then maybe you’ll learn to stay out of my way.”

She slammed the door.

Nia pressed her trembling hand against the glass.

Ava immediately put down her fork.

“Mom! She’s shaking!”

Vanessa walked over and deliberately closed the curtains.

“Sit down. She’s not your problem.”

Caleb stared at the closed curtains.

He had watched his mother mistreat Nia before. He had even tried to defend her occasionally.

But tonight felt different.

The rain was getting heavier, and Nia had been outside far too long.

Caleb quietly slipped his smartphone from his hoodie pocket.

He opened the camera.

And he began recording.

Twenty minutes later, the front door suddenly opened.

Marcus stepped inside carrying his travel bag. His business meeting had finished earlier than expected, and he had taken an earlier flight home.

He immediately noticed something unusual.

One of Nia’s white sneakers was lying near the patio entrance.

Her other sneaker was beside the sofa.

Marcus approached the curtains and pulled them apart.

He froze.

His daughter was sitting outside in the pouring rain, her arms wrapped around her knees.

Marcus threw open the patio door and rushed toward her.

He immediately removed his brown suit jacket and wrapped it around her trembling shoulders.

“Nia?! What are you doing out here?”

Vanessa hurried over, pretending to look concerned.

“She ran outside and refused to come in!”

Marcus looked directly at Nia.

“Sweetheart, is that true?”

Nia shook her head as tears mixed with the rain on her face.

“She locked me out. I kept begging.”

Marcus lifted Nia into his arms and carried her inside.

He wrapped her in a thick, warm blanket and helped her sit down.

Then he turned toward Vanessa.

“You left my daughter out in the rain?”

Vanessa folded her arms.

“She’s always playing the victim!”

Marcus stepped protectively in front of Nia.

“Pack your bags. You’re leaving tonight.”

Vanessa stared at him.

She had expected another argument.

She hadn’t expected Marcus to make a decision.

But before she could respond, Caleb stood up.

His hands were trembling.

“Dad… this wasn’t the first time.”

Marcus turned toward him.

“What do you mean?”

Caleb unlocked his phone and opened his photo gallery.

“I took pictures, Dad. Look.”

Marcus accepted the phone.

The first photograph showed Vanessa pushing a plate across the living-room floor with her shoe.

Nia was sitting beside the sofa, looking frightened.

Marcus swiped.

The second photograph showed Nia sleeping on the laundry-room floor beneath a thin blanket.

Another photograph showed Nia crying beside the outdoor trash can.

Inside it was her discarded birthday cake.

Marcus kept scrolling.

There was Nia kneeling on the kitchen floor, cleaning while Vanessa sat comfortably drinking coffee.

Then came the final photograph.

Nia was standing outside in the rain, pressing both hands against the glass.

Vanessa was closing the curtains.

Marcus stared at the screen.

He noticed the dates.

Every photograph had been taken while he was away on business.

His hands started trembling.

He slowly knelt in front of Nia.

“Why didn’t you tell me, baby?”

Nia couldn’t hold back her tears anymore.

She threw her arms around her father.

“I was scared, Daddy…”

Marcus embraced her tightly.

For several seconds, he couldn’t speak.

Then he slowly raised his head.

Vanessa stood motionless near the sofa.

May you like

Marcus looked directly into her eyes.

And she realized that the photographs had exposed everything she thought she had successfully hidden.
