Surprise

Chapter 7

The name on the lawyer's email was Aunt Denise.

She was Vanessa's older sister.

I had met her dozens of times at family gatherings. She always arrived carrying expensive handbags and telling everyone how successful she was.

She had once given me a birthday card with twenty dollars inside.

Vanessa had taken the money before I could spend it.

I remembered because it was the first time I had questioned where my money went.

Now Vanessa was claiming Denise had helped her manage the finances.

Dad called the lawyer immediately.

"Does that mean Denise had access to Nia's account?"

"Not necessarily," the lawyer replied. "We need to establish what role she actually played."

He requested that any relevant records be preserved.

Dad didn't contact Denise directly.

He was learning that anger could make it easier for people to destroy evidence or change their stories.

Instead, he asked the lawyer to arrange a formal meeting.

Before that meeting happened, Denise called our house.

I answered because I didn't recognize the number.

"Hello?"

"Nia, sweetheart. It's Aunt Denise."

Her voice was unusually gentle.

"How are you doing?"

I hesitated.

"Fine."

"I heard there's been some confusion about the money in your family."

My stomach tightened.

"What money?"

"The money Vanessa was handling. She's very upset, and I think everyone needs to calm down."

I gripped the phone.

"Did you help her take my money?"

There was a pause.

Then she sighed.

"You're young. You don't understand how complicated finances can be."

I had heard that excuse too many times.

"I'm old enough to know I never gave you permission to take anything."

Her tone hardened.

"Your father is making a terrible mistake by encouraging you to accuse people."

I wanted to hang up.

Instead, I remembered what the lawyer had told Dad about preserving evidence.

"Please speak to my father," I said.

Then I ended the call.

My hands were shaking when I found him.

I told him everything.

He didn't scold me for answering.

He simply asked whether I had saved the call details and written down what Denise had said.

I had.

He thanked me.

A few days later, the formal meeting took place at the lawyer's office.

Dad and I attended together, while Grandma waited nearby in case I needed her.

Vanessa arrived with her representative.

Denise came separately.

For the first time, I saw the two sisters sitting on opposite sides of a table, each trying to look composed.

The lawyer began by explaining the purpose of the meeting.

He was not there to decide guilt or innocence.

He was there to clarify disputed transactions, identify documents, and explore whether the matter could be resolved appropriately.

Vanessa insisted that she had used my money for household expenses.

Denise said she had only helped organize paperwork.

Neither could explain why the agreement I signed claimed I owed thousands of dollars without providing a proper accounting.

The lawyer placed copies of the notebook entries on the table.

Then he showed them the disputed authorization form.

Vanessa looked away.

Denise leaned forward.

"That form was never meant to be used like this."

Everyone became silent.

Her representative immediately asked her to clarify.

Denise swallowed.

"I helped Vanessa prepare some financial paperwork. I thought the account was hers to manage."

Dad stared at her.

"You told me you had never been involved."

"I didn't want to get caught in the middle."

"You're in the middle because my daughter lost money."

Denise looked at me.

"I didn't know she was being charged rent."

I believed she might be telling the truth about that part.

But it didn't explain everything.

The lawyer asked whether Denise had access to the disputed account.

She admitted that she had helped Vanessa contact the bank about financial arrangements.

She claimed she had not personally withdrawn the money.

The bank records would need to be examined to determine exactly what had happened.

Then the lawyer presented a document showing that Denise had received a transfer from Vanessa shortly after one of the disputed withdrawals.

Denise went pale.

"That was repayment for a loan."

"Can you provide records of the original loan?" the lawyer asked.

She couldn't produce them during the meeting.

Vanessa suddenly turned toward her sister.

"You told me nobody would question those transfers!"

Denise's eyes widened.

"Don't put this all on me!"

Their argument erupted so quickly that the lawyer had to interrupt them.

I sat perfectly still.

For months, Vanessa had made me believe I was alone.

Now the adults who had hidden behind vague explanations were arguing over the same money they had insisted I didn't understand.

Dad placed his hand over mine.

I looked down at our joined hands.

He wasn't asking me to speak.

He wasn't expecting me to rescue him.

He was simply there.

The meeting ended without a final agreement.

The lawyer explained that the records needed further review and that any suspected misconduct would be handled through the appropriate channels.

Vanessa was asked to preserve all relevant documents.

Denise was asked to provide records supporting her explanation of the transfers.

On the way home, Dad stopped at a small park.

We sat beneath a tree while children played on the swings.

"Are you okay?" he asked.

I considered the question.

"I don't know."

"That's fair."

I watched a little girl run toward her father and throw her arms around his waist.

Something inside me ached.

"I wish none of this had happened."

Dad nodded.

"So do I."

"I wish I could go back to when things were normal."

He took a breath.

"I wish that too. But I can't change what happened. I can only make sure we handle what comes next differently."

I leaned against him.

For the first time, I understood that healing didn't mean pretending the past hadn't hurt.

It meant building something better without letting the hurt control every day.

That evening, the lawyer sent Dad an update.

Denise had provided partial records, but several important transactions remained unexplained.

The bank had also identified a document connected to the disputed authorization that neither Vanessa nor Denise had mentioned during the meeting.

It contained a reference to an account held at another financial institution.

And that account appeared to have been opened using information associated with me.
