Surprise

Chapter 3

I did not sleep.

At seven the next morning, I met with the bank’s fraud department.

The loan application contained copies of my passport, tax records, and property documents.

All had been stored in the locked cabinet inside my home office.

Only Laura knew the code.

I called her.

“Did you give Daniel my financial records?”

“No.”

“Did Emma?”

Silence.

“Laura.”

“She needed documents for the company’s investor file.”

“So you let her into my cabinet?”

“She said it was routine.”

“Nothing about my passport is routine.”

“I didn’t know she would copy it.”

“You didn’t ask.”

Her voice cracked.

“I made a mistake.”

“You made several.”

The bank froze the application, but the manager warned me that Daniel had opened other accounts using my information.

“We need a complete investigation,” she said. “You should check your business credit too.”

By noon, I discovered two lines of credit totaling half a million dollars.

Both were connected to Foster Heritage Investments.

Both carried my forged guarantee.

I contacted the police.

They told me financial fraud took time to investigate.

Daniel had already prepared his defense.

He claimed I agreed to invest and had become bitter after a family argument.

My forged signature looked convincing.

My money was mixed with legitimate transfers Laura had authorized.

The truth was buried inside just enough consent to create confusion.

I called Emma.

She rejected the first two calls.

On the third, she answered.

“What do you want?”

“To protect you.”

“From my father?”

“From fraud.”

She sighed.

“Michael, stop.”

“Did Daniel ask you to sign company documents?”

“Yes. I’m an officer.”

“You graduated yesterday.”

“That doesn’t mean I’m stupid.”

“I did not say you were.”

“You keep treating me like a child.”

“Then answer as an adult. Did you read every document?”

A pause followed.

“Most of them.”

“What did you sign?”

“Employment forms. Banking forms. A partnership agreement.”

My chest tightened.

“Send me copies.”

“They’re confidential.”

“Emma, he forged my name.”

“No, he didn’t.”

“I am looking at the application.”

“He said you agreed.”

“I did not.”

Another pause.

Then Daniel’s voice came through the phone.

“Hang up.”

Emma lowered her voice.

“I have to go.”

“Where are you?”

“At the company office.”

“Give me the address.”

“No.”

“Emma.”

“You are not my father. You don’t get to control me.”

She ended the call.

I sat inside my car gripping the steering wheel.

The words still hurt.

But fear had become stronger than pain.

I hired a private investigator named Rosa Delgado.

Within three hours, she located the office.

It was a rented conference suite opened four days earlier.

Daniel had registered six companies at the same address.

Two had already been sued for unpaid debts.

One was under federal investigation.

Rosa placed photographs across the hotel desk.

“Your stepdaughter is listed as chief financial officer on three new accounts.”

“She knows nothing about finance.”

“That may be why he chose her.”

I felt sick.

Daniel was not rebuilding a relationship with Emma.

He was building a shield.

If the company collapsed, her name would be on everything.

I drove to the office.

Emma stood behind a reception desk wearing a new suit.

She looked proud until she saw me.

“You need to leave.”

“Where is Daniel?”

“In a meeting.”

I placed the documents before her.

“These are lawsuits against his companies.”

She refused to look.

“He explained those.”

“He has used six different business names.”

“Businesses fail.”

“He forged my signature.”

“You keep saying that.”

“Because it is true.”

A door opened.

Daniel stepped into the lobby with two men in expensive suits.

“Michael, this is harassment.”

“I want Emma’s name removed from every account.”

“She is an adult.”

“She is also your daughter.”

“Exactly. I’m giving her an opportunity.”

“You are giving her criminal liability.”

Emma’s face tightened.

“Stop talking about me like I’m not here.”

I turned to her.

“Then look at the evidence.”

“I have.”

“No. You listened to him explain it.”

Daniel placed one arm around her shoulders.

“She trusts me.”

I saw the triumph in his eyes.

He did not love being her father.

He loved winning the title from me.

“Ask him where the eighty-five thousand dollars went,” I said.

Emma glanced at him.

“It purchased development rights.”

“Ask him to show you the deed.”

Daniel’s jaw hardened.

“The closing is confidential.”

“There is no closing.”

One of the suited men quietly left.

The other began gathering his papers.

Daniel stepped close to me.

“You should accept that she chose me.”

“This is not about being chosen.”

“Everything is about being chosen.”

His words revealed more than he intended.

He wanted the daughter who once waited for him because her love proved he was not the man who abandoned her.

But instead of earning that love, he was using it.

Emma pointed toward the elevator.

“Please leave.”

I wanted to drag her out.

I wanted to force her to understand.

But she was twenty-two.

I could not protect her by becoming another person who ignored her choices.

I handed her Rosa’s card.

“When something feels wrong, call this number.”

She dropped it into the trash.

I left anyway.

That evening, Laura came to my hotel.

Her face was pale.

“Daniel is not answering me.”

“He has your money.”

“He said it was tied up.”

“It is gone.”

She sat on the edge of the bed.

“I thought if I helped him, Emma would finally stop wondering why he left.”

“You bought him a place in her life with my money.”

“Our money.”

“You hid it from me.”

She began crying.

“I was afraid you would say no.”

“That should have told you something.”

She covered her face.

“I don’t want to lose our marriage.”

“What did you think would happen when I found out?”

“I thought Daniel would repay it first.”

A knock sounded.

Two federal agents stood outside.

They asked whether Emma Foster lived at my address.

“She did,” I said.

One agent showed me a warrant.

“We need to locate her regarding a series of fraudulent transfers.”

“She was manipulated.”

“That may be true. But her signature appears on every account.”

Laura made a broken sound.

My phone rang.

Emma’s name appeared.

I answered immediately.

She was crying.

“Michael?”

“I’m here.”

“The office is empty. Daniel took everything.”

“Where are you?”

“I don’t know what to do.”

Before I could answer, someone pounded on her door.

A man shouted that he was a federal agent.

Emma began to panic.

“Please,” she whispered. “You’re the only person I could call.”

The words nearly broke me.

“What do I do?”

I picked up my coat.

“You open the door, tell the truth, and say nothing else until I arrive.”

“Are you coming?”

I looked at Laura, then at the agents.

“Yes.”

May you like

Despite everything, there had never been another answer.

“I’m coming.”
