Surprise

Chapter 1 - The Girl With the Heart-Shaped Scar

The moment I opened my front door and saw a young woman holding a newborn baby, I knew my peaceful Sunday afternoon was over.

But I had no idea that the next five minutes would destroy everything I believed about my past.

The girl standing on my porch couldn't have been older than twenty-two.

Her long black hair fell over a gray hoodie, and her hands trembled as she held the tiny baby against her chest.

Behind her stood my seventeen-year-old son, Jordan.

He looked nervous.

Too nervous.

"Jordan, what is this?" I demanded.

He stepped forward.

"Dad, please. Just listen."

I looked at the young woman.

Then at the baby.

And my stomach tightened.

"Why did you bring them here?"

The girl flinched.

She instinctively pulled the newborn closer.

Jordan moved beside her.

"Dad, you're scaring her."

I stared at him.

"Scaring her? You disappeared for three hours, ignored my calls, and now you're standing on my porch with a woman and a baby!"

"Dad—"

"I told you no more surprises in this house!"

My voice echoed across the front porch.

The young woman's eyes filled with tears.

"I'm sorry, sir."

Something about her voice made me hesitate.

It was soft.

Almost familiar.

But I pushed the feeling away.

"Who are you?"

"My name is Nia."

"And why are you here?"

She swallowed.

"I didn't come for money."

I frowned.

"Money?"

She nodded nervously.

"I know how this looks. But I didn't come to ask you for anything."

Jordan touched her shoulder.

"Just tell him what you told me."

She took a shaky breath.

"My mother told me to find you."

For a moment, I couldn't speak.

"Your mother?"

"Yes."

I looked at Jordan.

He avoided my eyes.

"What is going on?"

Before he could answer, footsteps sounded behind me.

My wife, Claire, appeared in the hallway.

"Arthur? Who's at the door?"

She stopped when she saw Nia.

Then she noticed the baby.

Her expression changed.

"Jordan, sweetheart, what's happening?"

Jordan rubbed his forehead.

"Mom, please don't get upset."

Claire stepped closer.

"Why would I be upset?"

Nobody answered.

I turned back toward Nia.

"What's your mother's name?"

She opened her mouth.

But before she could speak, the baby shifted in her arms.

The little girl's face scrunched.

She let out a soft cry.

Nia adjusted the blanket.

As she moved, her gray hoodie slipped slightly off her shoulder.

And that's when I saw it.

A scar.

High on her chest.

Small.

Pale.

Shaped almost perfectly like a heart.

My breath caught.

The world seemed to tilt beneath my feet.

I knew that mark.

God help me.

I knew that mark.

"Nia."

My voice was barely a whisper.

She looked up.

"Yes, sir?"

I pointed toward her chest.

"Where did you get that scar?"

She glanced down.

Then quickly pulled her hoodie back into place.

"I've had it since I was a baby."

My knees felt weak.

Behind me, Claire made a strange sound.

I turned.

She was staring at Nia.

One hand covered her mouth.

Her eyes were wide with terror.

"Claire?"

She shook her head.

"No."

Her voice cracked.

"No, Arthur."

I looked back at the scar.

There was no mistaking the shape.

Twenty-two years earlier, I had seen that exact mark on a newborn baby girl.

A baby whose mother had vanished.

A baby I had searched for until the police told me there was nothing more they could do.

I had spent years wondering whether that child was alive.

And now a young woman with the same scar was standing on my porch.

Holding a baby of her own.

I took one step backward.

Jordan looked between us.

"Dad?"

I couldn't answer.

Claire gripped the doorframe.

"Arthur," she whispered, "that's the same mark."

Nia looked frightened.

"What mark?"

I stared at her.

My heart was pounding so hard that I could barely breathe.

Twenty-two years.

Twenty-two years of questions.

Twenty-two years of guilt.

Twenty-two years of believing I had lost a daughter I never even got to hold properly.

I stepped closer.

"Nia, I need you to tell me something."

She tightened her arms around the baby.

"Okay."

I swallowed.

"What was your mother's name?"

Her lips parted.

Jordan watched us anxiously.

Claire stood frozen behind me.

Nia looked directly into my eyes.

Then she whispered a name.

"Vanessa."

My entire body went cold.

Vanessa.

The woman I had loved before I ever met Claire.

The woman who disappeared from my life twenty-two years ago.

The woman who had given birth to my first child.

And suddenly, the past I thought was buried came rushing back.

But before I could say another word, Nia reached into her pocket.

She pulled out a yellowed envelope.

"My mother told me to give you this."

I stared at it.

On the front, written in handwriting I hadn't seen in over two decades, were five words.

ARTHUR, PLEASE FORGIVE ME SOMEDAY.

My hands began shaking.

May you like

Because I recognized Vanessa's handwriting.

And I knew that whatever was inside the envelope could change my family forever.
