Surprise

Chapter 6 - The General’s ShadowThe explosion had destroyed the evidence vehicle outside.

Fortunately, Shaw had already uploaded copies of the flash drive to a secured server.

Sterling did not know that.

We let him believe the evidence was gone.

Within an hour, three calls reached the base from Brigadier General Warren Pike, commander of the regional training division. Pike demanded that Sterling be transferred into his custody.

That told me almost everything.

Almost.

I called Pike and told him the explosion had destroyed our files.

He exhaled before pretending to sound concerned.

Then he ordered me to end the investigation.

“You exceeded your authority,” he said. “Return to Washington.”

“Sterling assaulted me in front of a hundred witnesses.”

“Then handle that single incident. Stop digging into base finances.”

He ended the call.

Shaw had recorded every word.

The following morning, we announced that Sterling would be transported to regional command.

His relief was obvious.

He believed Pike would protect him.

The convoy departed at six.

Halfway to the gate, the lead vehicle stopped.

General Pike’s staff car blocked the road.

Pike stepped out wearing his dress uniform. Two armed aides followed.

He opened Sterling’s vehicle himself.

“You’re coming with me,” he said.

I approached from behind the convoy.

“No, General. He isn’t.”

Pike turned and saw the body camera attached to my uniform.

“You’re disobeying a direct order.”

“I’m executing a warrant authorized by the Army Criminal Investigation Division.”

Military police surrounded his car.

Pike’s confidence did not disappear. Men like him survived by believing rank made them untouchable.

He pointed at Miller, who stood with the witness team.

“That private stole classified financial documents.”

Miller’s face tightened.

“That’s your plan?” I asked. “Blame the nineteen-year-old?”

Pike lowered his voice.

“Colonel, careers can still be saved.”

I understood the offer.

Close the investigation, sacrifice Sterling, and preserve the institution’s reputation.

I stepped closer.

“You confused silence with loyalty, General.”

Behind me, Sergeant Hayes raised his phone.

Dozens of soldiers were recording.

For the first time, Pike saw what Sterling had seen in the mess hall.

The fear was gone.
