Surprise

Chapter 7

I do not remember the drive to Lucia’s school.

I remember sound.

Victor’s voice on the phone.

Rosa praying in Italian.

My own breath tearing in and out like I was running while sitting still.

The boys had been locked safely at the estate with guards, but Marco had shouted after me, “Bring her back!”

As if there were any universe where I would not.

At the school, the principal cried before she spoke.

That told me too much.

“She was signed out,” she said.

My hands went numb.

“By who?”

She looked at the paper.

“Her father.”

“He does not have unsupervised pickup.”

“I know. The substitute in the office didn’t check the updated order.”

I stared at her.

Victor stepped between us slightly.

Not to silence me.

To keep me upright.

“Security footage,” he said.

The principal nodded frantically.

We watched Evan walk in wearing calm like a mask.

Lucia appeared beside him, confused but not screaming.

Then Vanessa entered behind them.

My stomach dropped.

Vanessa had a coat over Lucia’s shoulders.

Lucia looked back once.

Then the door closed.

The police issued an alert.

Helena called the judge.

Victor called people I did not ask about.

I sat in the principal’s office clutching Lucia’s backpack.

Inside was her lunch.

A drawing of the Rinaldi boys as dragons.

A note for me.

Mama, after school can we make pancakes?

I folded over it.

I could not cry.

Crying would make it real.

Detective Harris arrived.

He asked questions.

I answered like a machine.

Then my phone rang.

Evan.

Victor stood.

I answered on speaker.

“Where is she?”

Evan’s voice was smooth.

“Safe.”

Lucia cried in the background.

The room went black at the edges.

Victor’s hand closed around the back of my chair.

I stayed upright.

“You bring her back now.”

“I want a new custody agreement.”

“You kidnapped her.”

“I picked up my daughter.”

“You violated a court order.”

“She’s safer with me than in a gangster’s mansion.”

Victor’s face did not change.

That frightened me more than rage.

Evan continued.

“You sign over primary custody. You admit you’re unstable. You leave Rinaldi. Then I tell you where she is.”

I looked at Detective Harris.

He nodded, recording.

I said, “Let me talk to her.”

“No.”

“Evan.”

“She cries too much when she hears you.”

My chest split.

Vanessa’s voice sounded faintly.

“Evan, hurry.”

He hung up.

The trace failed.

Prepaid routing app.

I stood.

Everyone looked at me.

“He said Vanessa’s name.”

Detective Harris frowned.

“So?”

“Vanessa hates cheap hotels. She once said she’d rather sleep in a car than stay anywhere without room service.”

Victor’s eyes sharpened.

I kept going.

“Evan has no money. Vanessa does. If they’re hiding, she chose the place.”

Helena pulled up credit records.

Adult Marco searched known associates.

Rosa called someone at a luxury florist because apparently Vanessa ordered flowers weekly.

Thirty minutes later, we had it.

A boutique hotel near the river.

Suite under Vanessa’s maiden name.

Police moved.

Victor was ordered to stay back.

He did not.

Neither did I.

When we reached the hotel, officers surrounded the exits.

Detective Harris knocked.

“Police.”

Inside, something crashed.

Lucia screamed.

I moved before anyone could stop me.

Victor caught me around the waist.

“No.”

“My daughter—”

“Alive,” he said into my ear. “You go in after police make it alive.”

The door burst open.

Evan stood inside holding Lucia in front of him like a shield.

That was when every last piece of guilt I ever felt for leaving him died.

Lucia saw me.

“Mama!”

Evan’s face twisted.

“Stay back!”

Detective Harris aimed his gun.

Victor stepped beside me, hands visible, voice deadly soft.

“Evan. Look at me.”

Evan did.

Victor said, “If you love her, let her go.”

Evan laughed wildly.

“She’s mine.”

Lucia sobbed.

“No, Daddy.”

Those two words broke him.

Not because he loved her.

Because she rejected ownership.

His grip loosened.

Just enough.

Lucia bit his hand.

Hard.

He screamed.

She ran.

I caught her so hard we both fell to the hallway carpet.

Police tackled Evan.

Vanessa screamed from the bathroom.

Lucia clung to my neck.

“I knew you’d come,” she sobbed.

I held her face in my hands.

“Always.”

Victor crouched beside us.

Lucia reached one shaking hand toward him.

He took it.

“Did we win?” she whispered.

May you like

His voice broke.

“Yes, little judge. We won.”
