Surprise

Chapter 5

Investigators found the compartment at 11:18 that morning.

It was beneath a removable stone panel behind the wine shelves.

Inside were three encrypted drives.

Two notebooks.

A stack of passports.

And nearly half a million dollars in cash.

Torres called me from the estate.

“Your daughter just gave us more than evidence of domestic violence.”

“What did she give you?”

“We don't know yet.”

That answer frightened me more than certainty.

By afternoon, financial-crime agents were involved.

The notebooks contained initials, dates, property addresses, dollar amounts, and payments.

Some were small.

Others reached six figures.

One set of initials appeared repeatedly.

S.B.

Samuel Barlow.

Chief of Police.

Another appeared beside three medical-facility payments.

M.R.

Dr. Malcolm Reeves.

Richard had not simply built influence.

He had documented it.

Men like him often believed records made them powerful.

Eventually, records made them defendants.

Lily remained in the hospital another night.

That evening, Evelyn came to see her.

Two state investigators escorted her.

The moment Lily saw her, her body tightened.

I stood.

“You don't have to speak with her.”

Evelyn stopped near the door.

Her makeup was gone.

So were the diamonds.

She looked ten years older.

“I'll leave if you want.”

Lily stared at her.

“Why are you here?”

Evelyn's eyes filled.

“To apologize.”

Lily laughed once.

It wasn't kind.

“You told me not to provoke him.”

“I know.”

“You watched him hurt me.”

“I know.”

“You lied for him.”

Evelyn began crying.

“I know.”

Lily's voice shook.

“Then don't stand there acting sad like that fixes anything.”

“It doesn't.”

That answer surprised both of us.

Evelyn reached into her purse slowly.

The investigators stiffened.

She removed a small flash drive.

“I brought this.”

One investigator took it.

“What is it?”

“Security footage.”

Lily stared.

Evelyn continued.

“Richard deleted footage from the main system whenever he hurt you.”

Lily whispered, “I knew it.”

“But he didn't know I kept a backup.”

I looked at Evelyn.

“Why?”

She met my eyes.

“Because I was afraid of my son.”

There it was.

The truth none of us expected.

Lily shook her head.

“You were afraid?”

“Yes.”

“You had money. A house. Friends.”

“So did you.”

Lily went silent.

Evelyn's face crumpled.

“I am not comparing what he did to you with anything he did to me.”

“What did he do to you?”

Evelyn lowered her eyes.

“After his father died, Richard took control of the family companies. Then my accounts. Then my home.”

“But the estate belongs to you.”

“Not anymore.”

I remembered how confidently she had behaved.

Maybe arrogance had been armor.

Maybe fear wore expensive clothes too.

Evelyn continued.

“When I challenged him, he threatened to have me declared incompetent.”

Lily stared at her.

“The same thing.”

“Yes.”

“Dr. Reeves?”

Evelyn nodded.

A long silence passed.

“You knew what he planned to do to me,” Lily said.

“I knew he threatened you.”

“And you helped.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Evelyn wiped her face.

“Because every time I resisted him, he reminded me he could leave me with nothing.”

Lily's anger returned.

“So you sacrificed me instead?”

Evelyn couldn't answer.

Lily turned away.

“Get out.”

Evelyn nodded.

At the door, she stopped.

“I don't expect forgiveness.”

“Good.”

“But please use the drive.”

She left.

Lily stared at the wall for a long time.

Then she whispered, “I hate her.”

“You're allowed.”

“But I also feel sorry for her.”

“You're allowed that too.”

“I don't want to.”

“You don't have to decide today.”

The investigators reviewed the flash drive.

There were hundreds of clips.

Some showed ordinary household moments.

Others showed Richard screaming.

Breaking objects.

Blocking Lily from leaving rooms.

Grabbing her wrist.

Shoving her.

Once, he pushed Evelyn against a wall.

Another clip showed him forcing Lily to sign a document while standing over her.

The investigators stopped playback several times because Lily became overwhelmed.

Then they found Easter morning.

The camera angle covered the living room.

Richard and Lily argued.

There was no sound at first.

Then audio began.

Richard held papers.

Lily refused.

He slapped her.

She staggered.

I stopped breathing.

He struck her again.

She fell.

Then he grabbed her arm and pulled her upward.

Lily on the hospital bed looked away.

I couldn't.

I forced myself to watch.

Richard shoved her.

She hit the floor.

Then he kicked her side once.

Not repeatedly.

Once was enough.

Evelyn entered.

She froze.

Richard shouted something at her.

She backed away.

Lily crawled toward the couch.

Richard grabbed her neck.

The investigator stopped the video.

Nobody spoke.

I felt tears on my face.

I hadn't noticed them start.

Lily whispered, “Play the rest.”

“You don't have to.”

“I want to.”

The investigator resumed.

Evelyn finally moved toward Richard.

She pulled at his arm.

He released Lily.

Then Evelyn looked toward the patio.

Guests were approaching.

She whispered urgently to Richard.

They both began cleaning.

Richard straightened his clothes.

Evelyn picked up a broken glass.

Lily reached for her phone.

Then guests entered.

The abuse disappeared behind smiles.

The perfect Easter resumed.

Lily watched all of it.

When the video ended, she said, “She tried to stop him.”

I didn't answer.

“Too late,” Lily added.

“Yes.”

“But she did.”

“Yes.”

That mattered to Lily.

I could tell.

Not enough for forgiveness.

But enough to complicate hatred.

Torres arrived an hour later.

She carried a sealed folder.

“Richard has been arrested.”

Lily looked at her.

“For assault?”

“Aggravated domestic assault, strangulation, witness intimidation, and evidence tampering to start.”

“To start?”

Torres sat down.

“The drives from the floor compartment were decrypted.”

My stomach tightened.

“What did you find?”

“Financial records linking Richard to payments involving Chief Barlow.”

Lily asked, “Bribes?”

“It appears so.”

“And Dr. Reeves?”

“Yes.”

Torres opened the folder.

“There are also payments to two court clerks, a private investigator, and an employee at a records office.”

I stared at her.

“For what?”

“We are still building the case.”

She hesitated.

“But there's something you both need to know.”

Lily's face tightened.

“What?”

Torres took out a photograph.

It showed a woman I didn't recognize.

Young.

Dark hair.

Serious eyes.

“Her name is Anna Mercer.”

Lily looked confused.

“Who is she?”

“She filed the domestic-violence complaint against Richard four years ago.”

“The one that disappeared?”

“Yes.”

“Where is she now?”

Torres looked at me.

Then back at Lily.

“We found her.”

Lily's eyes widened.

“And?”

“She is willing to testify.”

Lily covered her mouth.

Torres wasn't finished.

“Anna says Richard used the exact same psychiatric-threat strategy against her.”

My daughter stared at the photograph.

“He did this before.”

“Yes.”

Torres nodded slowly.

“And according to Anna, Evelyn helped her escape.”

That night, nothing about Richard's family made sense anymore.

May you like

But for the first time, the secrets were not protecting him.

They were turning against him.
